Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body.

If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include not just the twitter.com URL but also Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source (archive.today, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org). Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed.

Mass-tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken Markov chain bot will result in a comm ban.

Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.

Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned.

Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society.

Image is of protestors burning down the Singha Durbar, the seat of Nepal's government offices in Kathmandu.

For more on the situation in Nepal, I recommend @MelianPretext@lemmygrad.ml's comment here.

Following a "anti-corruption" protest movement spurred by a social media ban (but with much deeper roots) in which dozens of protestors were killed by state forces, the government of KP Oli has been ousted, and an interim leader is currently in power as the country prepares for elections. Notably, events have been characterized as "Gen Z protests", and this leader was decided (at least partially) by a Discord vote. When a non-western government rapidly falls, it's wise to at least glance in the direction of the United States, and there are almost certainly elements of color revolution here. But, as always, it's more complicated than simple regime change - Nepal is a deeply troubled economy even as developing countries go.

Vijay Prashad has offered his five theses as to why Nepal's government fell that goes beyond non-specific terms like "corruption" or "color revolution":

  1. Despite winning 75% of the seats in parliament in 2017, the various communist parties have failed to unify towards forming a common agenda and solving the problems of the people. When the nominally united communist party split in 2021, infighting and opportunism eventually brought on the rightist politicians we see today.

  2. The Nepalese economy is not successful. Disasters are slow to be ameliorated, education and healthcare is underfunded, and poverty is fairly rampant. There have been significant developments made by the communist parties, such as electrification programs and some poverty reduction, but it has been insufficient.

  3. The petty bourgeois usually come from oppressed Hindu castes, and are frustrated by the domination of upper castes, and so are inspired by India's BJP. They essentially want a return to monarchy, under the guise of anti-corruption, and despite their relatively small numbers, are powerfully organized.

  4. Of the countries that aren't tiny islands, Nepal has the highest per capita rate of work migration, due to insufficient employment in Nepal. The jobs that Nepalese citizens receive overseas range from unpleasant to unbearable in both labour and wages, and this has generated rightful suspicion that the government cares more about foreign direct investors than their own citizens overseas.

  5. The government of KP Oli was close to the United States, and India's Modi has promoted the BJP in Nepal. Both countries have sought to exert influence over Nepal, though Prashad speculates that, if there is indeed a foreign mastermind at work, India is more likely to be the culprit behind these recent protests, in a gambit to use the chaos to promote/install a far right monarchist government.

I agree with Prashad that it seems unlikely that mere electoral changes will result in anything terribly productive, though whatever government emerges will inevitably hoist the banner of anti-corruption to try and legitimize themselves. We have seen the same breakdown of electoralism as a meaningful pathway to solve national problems all across the world, from the superpowers to the poorest states. Until a rupture occurs, greater surveillance, policing, and repression seems guaranteed.

Israel has issued an evacuation warning for the main sea port in the city of Hodeidah, Yemen. Likely imminent airstrikes or drone strikes, to disrupt rebuilding and repair operations.

Source

Strikes occurred, 12-13 airstrikes against 3 docks at the port. Collaborated by both Yemeni and Israeli sources. (Al Masirah TV says 12 airstrikes on Hodeidah harbour).

Moon of Alabama posted its analysis of the new Saudi/Pakistan defense pact:

"China, which is allied with Pakistan, will be happy about the deal. So will be Iran. It was likely already informed about it."

"The U.S., and Donald Trump, are the big losers in this. The unrestricted support for Israel is coming at an ever increasing price. The Gulf countries are - slowly, slowly - moving away from it."

France is slated to recognize Palestine this month. Particularly the PA. Macron says the goal is to undermine HAMAS. Whatever dude.

This has not stopped Zionists from complaining about the move because they don't want the PA or P-anything around once this war is over.

~~The other countries on that map this month seem to have their~~ Belgium has its recognition of Palestine contingent on a deal being struck this month between Israel and HAMAS. Other countries like Australia, Canada, other EU countries have their recognition conditional based on "reforms" in the PA. Idk what that's supposed to mean but they probably just want an excuse to not recognize thr country. eu-cool

Something i thought was notable, the AP map makes Palestine look pretty isolated, but in fact after September it will pretty much be just the usual suspects that don't recognize them.

Yesterday three Russian MiG 31BM aircraft entered Estonian airspace for 12-13 minutes, and were escorted out by Italian F-35As and photographed by Swedish Gripens. The MiG 31s were only armed with infrared guided short range R-73/74 air to air missiles, no radar guided missiles.

This inline with previous Russian actions in the realm of chipping away at deterrence of it's adversaries, such as flying styrofoam Gerbera drones/decoys into Poland during Russian air raids in Ukraine, hosting ambiguous military exercises on the borders, etc. The playbook is quite simple:

  • Take aggressive action but with plausible deniability. In this case, the MiG 31s not being armed with R-33/37 long range radar guided missiles. Previously, for instance flying styrofoam decoy drones into Poland instead of the Geran drones armed with warheads, and the infamous "military exercises" on Ukraine's borders before the war.
  • Make up a completely nonsensical story devoid of any factual basis to spread in the Russian information space and for domestic audiences, and stick to it no matter how ridiculous. This acts to muddy the waters and increase focus on the plausible deniability.
  • Rely on said plausible deniability and ambiguity to prevent any response. Italy and Sweden aren't going to start a war with Russia over semi armed MiGs flying over Estonia. Poland is not going to start a war over bits of styrofoam.
  • Use these actions to "shift the goalposts" for what is considered normal behaviour.
  • Eventually take real action (for instance, invading Ukraine).

Kyle Kulinski is now calling himself a "leftist" and saying maybe gulags weren't an awful idea and stuff. Of course, he still apparently thinks people like Cenk Uygur and Bernie and AOC and the rest of "The Squad", and probably half the Democrats in office—including fucking Gavin Newsom and Beto O'Rourke—are also leftists. And he's still like, "Elect Democrats! BlUe WaVe will start to fix things, even if now I think it won't be enough."

Time to remind ya' homies not to fall for it, and that SIMPLY dropping civility politics isn't enough to make you a leftist. Dude even openly admits he's just doing it for the clicks, because he sees the reactionaries doing so well with it. Holy shit.

New officials with AI?! Rama: Diella will have children, they will deal with civil matters

The Prime Minister spoke about the creation of new officials produced by Artificial Intelligence, whom he called “children of the Sun”. According to him, the use of advanced technology will bring more equality, transparency and efficiency in decision-making, as well as eliminate human influence in the evaluation of documents and offers in tenders. Rama added that this approach will also be extended to other sectors, including food safety and product control.

The US expands war efforts against unaligned South American countries, this time pressuring Colombia with the USN and USCG^[https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2025/09/us-shifts-focus-to-colombia-in-its-fake-war-on-drugs-colombia-responds-by-threatening-to-stop-buying-us-weapons.html]. Colombia responds by threatening to stop purchasing US weapons. These trends are likely to push many South American states closer to China for naval defense. I could see this being used by the PLAN to test their UUVs against the USN in preparation for a hypothetical Pacific war without direct risk.

There is an interesting article by the Revolutionary Communist Party of Nepal (RCPN) with a profile of the sides involved in Nepal's situation with some new speculation:

Machine translated with my insertions and correctionsAfter the Gen-Z movement became explosive, an organization called ‘Hami Nepal’ suddenly started being promoted. Those who initially led the movement, called for people to take to the streets, and applied for permission from the CDO office for the program suddenly disappeared. Suddenly, Hami Nepal, Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Sah, and Hami Nepal President Sudan Gurung came to the front, claiming to be the real organizers of the movement.

...

According to the organization's [Hami Nepal] website, he [the group's chairman] appears to be involved in anti-China activities, namely the Free Tibet movement. He still has the logo and link of 'Students for a Free Tibet' on his group's website as a supporting organization.

...

Their [RAW and CIA] pre-plan was to turn the supposedly peaceful movement into violent, to create an uncontrollable situation and achieve their goal. According to a source, they mobilized schoolchildren to the front line [on the first day of the protest]. They created a situation where the police would open fire and as soon as the police opened fire, they would order sharpshooters kept on standby to open fire and shoot students in their college uniforms targetting the head and chest.

...

The source claims that the protesters themselves cleaned the streets and even managed the garbage themselves, as they suspected that such bullet casings would be found.

There are other interesting things in this and another shorter article, which discusses such an event's nurturing through continuous government failures, but it is in Nepali; it contains a concerning shenanigan of the NGO that "organized" the protests:

They actually did this btw... within two days of the formation of the government, the same group has started demanding the resignation of the newly appointed Prime Minister Sushil Karki, saying that she has not paid due attention to the treatment and compensation of the families of the martyrs and the injured.

The King and Queen will give the president a bespoke hand-bound leather volume to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. He will also receive the Union Flag that flew over Buckingham Palace on the day of his second inauguration in January 2025.

They'll give the first lady a silver and enamel bowl handcrafted by Northern Irish artist Cara Murphy and a personalised Anya Hindmarch handbag.

We're told they'll also be jointly presented with a silver photograph frame engraved with their joint cipher.

Trump will give the King a replica of a President Eisenhower sword as a "reminder of the historical partnership that was critical to winning World War II".

The Queen will be presented a Tiffany & Co vintage 18K gold, diamond & ruby flower brooch.

Smol bean nazi country (Finland) reporting on Charlie Kirk.

It's disgusting from start to finish. Written like a sob story that begings with describing the place and the crying mourning people there. Much emphasis is placed on the "mourning youth".Wild to see how deep into the vassal state status we have gone and how quickly it has happened. An article like this isn't something you would have seen previously.

Some choice quotes translated by me:

Yksi laskee kukan, toinen käsin kirjoitetun viestin surunvalittelujen röykkiöön. Jotkut pitävät lyhyitä puheita, useimmat vain istuvat hiljaa ja tuijottavat.

A person lays a flower, another a hand written note, on to the pile of messages of mourning. Some hold short speeches, most just sit quietly and stare.

Oh boy, such heartbreak.

Ihmisvilinä osoittaa, että Kirkin ampuminen ei ollut vain yksi väkivaltaisuus muiden joukossa, vaan mahdollisesti merkittävin aktivistin kuolema Yhdysvalloissa sitten Martin Luther King Jr.:n salamurhan yli puoli vuosisataa sitten.

The crowd size shows that the shooting of Kirk wasn't just another act of violence among many, but possibly the most meaningful death of a significant activist in the United States since the assasination of Martin Luther King Jr over half a century ago.

Kingiä ja Kirkiä yhdisti puhumisen taito. King oli kansalaisoikeusliikkeen ääni. Kirk oli Donald Trumpin Maga-liikkeen ääni, etenkin nuorelle yleisölle.

King osasi puhua radiolle ja televisiolle. Kirk osasi puhua internetille.

What connects King and Kirk is the skill of speaking. King was the voice of the civil rights movement. Kirk was the voice of Trumps Maga-movement. Especially to young people.

King knew how to speak to the radio and the TV. Kirk knew how to speak to the internet.

The article gets more and more disgusting from this point on and I am not going to spend more time on it because of that. The interviews of the Kirk cultists are in English and it is probably easily machine translatable if someone wants to witness the deeper brainworms presented here with zero criticism.

In kkkanada news, the BC government approves the ksi lisims LNG terminal. This didn't get a lot of traction in c/canada so I'll put it here too.

this project is notable for a few reasons. one, it destroy's BC's ability to meet any climate objectives and is about as bad an idea as any new fossil fuel infrastructure. two, BC is nominally the more progressive end of Canadian politics and is currently led by a reasonably popular liberal-left government, so this illustrates the limits of climate action even in 'progressive' parts of a fossil fuel oriented country. neither of these aspects of the story are that unique.

the more unique aspect of this project is the first nations piece. the nisga'a lisims government is in favour of the project, while several other nations along the pipeline route are not in favour. for reference, all of the BC pipelines you may have read about in the context of wetsuweten land defenders are in the same region of BC (though they don't all follow the same route or affect the same nations). the nisga'a government is in favour of ksi lisims and stands to gain by owning the land the terminal is on, leasing to the terminal operator. nisga'a are one of the handful of first nations in BC that have modern treaties and are generally better organized than most of the first nations in the province. they also own a large stake of the prince rupert gas transmission line that if constructed, would feed the ksi lisims terminal. other nations and some hereditary chiefs are not in favour of the ksi lisims project or other pipelines but there is a lot of nuance to this as there are multiple proposed pipelines and each nation is affected by them separately.

this element of the LNG project to me exemplifies how first nations/indigenous communities are not a monolith (lots of differences between each nation stemming from both cultural/linguistic differences as well as different geography/opportunities/perspectives with respect to resource development), how each individual first nation is not a monolith (for example, hereditary chiefs vs indian act chiefs), and how inter-nation relationships and politics are not simple. there's a tendency in climate change activism circles to reductively assume all indigenous people are modern iron eyes cody and that if you 'center indigenous voices' or whatever that effective climate action will follow. I believe appreciating these differences is necessary to move past a utopian understanding of decolonization and land back.

Does anyone have the original ~4 hour live CGTN coverage of the 80th V-Day anniversary parade?

The only mirror I can find is from South China Morning Post, which is only 2 hours and removes the historical recountings and interviews before the parade (and potentially removes a lot of content or speeches from after the parade)

It looks like it's been scrubbed from YouTube, it had a decently long introduction explaining Japanese atrocities and interviews about modern China's role as a world power and military challenging the USA :(

Edit: this person archived only 1.5 hours of it, no interviews and potentially cuts speeches: https://youtu.be/XfJDXgRFdLY china

Edit2: I found it!

Could someone figure out how to download and maybe archive it to TankieTube? I might try later but I'm blob-no-thoughts

Fresh setback for Milei as Congress overturns two presidential vetoes

Opposition secures two-thirds majority to reverse Milei’s presidential vetoes on laws declaring paediatric emergency for (181–60) and boosting funding for state universities (174–67).

Lawmakers in Argentina’s lower house dealt President Javier Milei two heavy political defeats on Wednesday, overturning his vetoes of bills that will boost funding for paediatric care and state universities. As the Casa Rosada had feared, the opposition secured the required two-thirds majority in the Chamber of Deputies in both cases. The measures now head to the Senate for final approval.

milei's government is at war with paediatric hospitals. Let that fucking sink in.

It was a tense session in the lower house. The defeat for the ruling party marks the government’s first major parliamentary defeat since its electoral loss in Buenos Aires Province earlier this month. The first vote concerned the declaration of a paediatric emergency in Argentina, focusing mainly on conditions facing staff at the prestigious Garrahan Children’s Hospital. Workers at the institution have walked off the job on repeated occasions in protest at working conditions low pay. Milei’s veto of the bill was rejected by 181 votes to 60, comfortably reaching the required majority.

Minutes later, deputies turned their attention to the National Universities Funding Law. A slightly lower margin, 174, voted to overturn the veto with 67 opposed. As the vote concluded, opposition lawmakers rose from their seats and broke into chants in defence of state higher education.

Both measures will now go to the Senate, where the opposition will again need a two-thirds majority to secure their passage into law.

I have some reservations with the use of certain trendy “progressive” phrases and their implications in this article, but it merely showcases the general weakness of socialist organisation in this country and will necessarily get corrected under the dialectics of struggle.

Malaysia’s Place is in the Global South

Surrounded by armed Malaysian police, Malaysians wave Palestinian flags and hold placards during a protest at the US embassy on the anniversary of the First Intifada, 13 December 2024.

remainder

Authored by Kamal Aarif Kamaruddin, Reviewed by Aarani Diana Santhananaban, All photos are provided by GEGAR.

Since October 7th – which remains one of the greatest acts of decolonisation by an occupied population in modern history – I joined the millions of people across the world who, out of a sense of moral and historical urgency, became radicalised into joining the mass actions against the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

Along with a few fellow comrades, we formed Gegar Amerika, later known as GEGAR (Gerakan Gabungan Anti-Imperialis), – a progressive, anti-imperialist and anti-zionist collective united for the liberation of Palestine.

We slept in tents for 7 days outside of the U.S. embassy; defended the encampment against police and state authorities; joined hundreds in staging a sit-in against the police for its defence of the U.S. embassy in January 2024, and got called into questioning by the police for organising a protest against the NATSEC military exhibition in May 2024, which hosted the biggest sponsors of the genocide including Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, and Leonardo.

On June 10th last year, we disrupted the U.S. National Independence Day Dinner in KL, which hosted the U.S. Embassy while hundreds were being massacred in a joint US-Israeli operation in Nuseirat refugee camp.

Since then, we continued to organise direct actions against complicit Western imperialist  embassies and zionist corporations; from PNB and Sime Darby’s ties to Caterpillar to the starvation campaigns waged by Israel, America, U.K.,, and European Union against Gaza.

In response to Bisan Al-Owda’s call for action to stop the US-Israeli siege of Gaza, Malaysian protestors picket the front gates of the US embassy, banging pots and pans, while holding a banner which reads “Israel, Amerikka, UK, & EU: Stop Starving Gaza!“, 30 July 2025.

Yet, as we near the eve of Hari Kebangsaan and Hari Malaysia, the Malaysian government and its institutions, in spite of its nationalistic and superficially pro-Palestinian rhetoric, continues to serve and enforce the agenda of its imperialist masters.

After 2 years of being on the frontlines against genocide, it is clear that the question of Palestine is no longer just a struggle against a 77-year old zionist occupation. In the heart of Malaya, it is also a struggle against the oppressive neo-colonial state in Putrajaya, which upholds the interests of Washington and its Western allies, while oppressing workers and Indigenous peoples at home.

A Malaysian police officer carries a gun during a GEGAR protest at the US Embassy on the anniversary of the First Intifada, 13 December 2024.

Our solidarity as Malaysians falls flat as long as we refuse to confront a basic but uncomfortable reality: that until Malaysia breaks away from the forces of U.S. imperialism, we are and continue to be complicit in the U.S.-Israeli death machine. We have been and are still enabling the genocide of Palestinians.

Recently, in July 2025, the Malaysian military hosted U.S. and Australian armed forces in Perak, as the Western-imperialist war machine actively committed genocide and mass murder across Palestine, Yemen, Lebanon, Iran, and Global South. Not only does it partner us in genocide: it invites the presence of war criminals in our communities; polluting our environment and neighbourhoods with tanks, fighter jets, and armed trucks, muddying our moral standards, and tainting our obligations to the oppressed.

Meanwhile, next year, in 2026, the Royal Malaysian Navy will participate in the bi-annual RIMPAC naval exercise in Hawaii alongside the imperialist America and zionist state of  Israel. The RIMPAC exercises is a microcosm of capitalism’s murderous tendencies: the fascist militaries of the global ruling class gather in the Pacific to exchange the technologies, tactics, and strategies that they have gained from waging wars and counterinsurgencies against poor and oppressed bodies around the globe.

Not only does our navy participate in a military exercise alongside genocidal forces, but activists in Okinawa and Hawa’ii have long protested the RIMPAC exercises for its destruction of Indigenous lands, contamination of air and water, and sexual and patriarchal violence against Indigenous women, girls, queer and gender-diverse people.

Soldier or policeman brandishes a rifle while overlooking a pots-and-pans banging action at the gates of the US embassy to protest the US, Israeli, EU, and UK-imposed starvation of Gaza, 30 July 2025.

After 2 years of boycotts and rallies, it is clear that the Malaysian state remains firmly loyal to the forces of Capital and Empire. The same government that shook hands with Ismail Haniyeh has no qualms joining forces with the zionist army bombing patients in Al-Shifa and massacring hundreds in a single 10-minute operation in Nuseirat.

Meanwhile, global corporations, financing the genocide have further entrenched their neo-colonialist interests in Malaysia. In July 2024, as humanitarian zones in Mawasi were relentlessly bombed, a joint consortium led by Khazanah, EPF, Abu Dhabi Investment, and Blackrock acquired shares of Malaysian Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB), handing control of 39 Malaysian airports to the Blackrock monopoly.

Blackrock is a major sponsor of the ongoing genocide in Gaza, funding American weapons manufacturers such as Lockheed Martin Corp., Boeing Co, Raytheon Co, General Dynamics Corp, and Northrop Grumman Corp. For decades, Blackrock has funded America’s overseas wars of aggression, The cumulative death toll from the post-9/11 wars of counterterrorism has reached over 4.5 million in Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Yemen in what could only be considered a modern Holocaust.

As it spreads war and devastation across the globe, Blackrock has maintained a monopolistic grip over the Malaysian economy; owning equity shares in hundreds of firms including Simes Darby, Petronas, Tenaga Nasional, and more. Since the past decade, Blackrock has played an increasingly influential role in almost every aspect of working-class life in Malaysia from EPF pensions to healthcare to “Syariah-compliant” banking.

Activists stage a sit-in in front of the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) headquarters in Jalan Palestin to protest Blackrock investments in retirement funds, 29 August 2024.

Meanwhile, in its drive to secure financial investments from Western imperialist entities, Anwar’s government is pushing for the construction of Microsoft and Google cloud infrastructure and data centres across Malaysia, exploiting our environment, and polluting our land, water, and air. In allowing our resources to be colonised by Western tech giants, Malaysia becomes an integral link in a long imperialist supply chain from the mining and exploitation of minerals in the Congo and Bolivia, to the supply of digital infrastructure and services for Israeli and American war criminals.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-09-17/australia-png-fail-defence-agreement-communique/105782424

A major defence treaty between Australia and Papua New Guinea has failed to get over the line today, with the countries resorting to signing a communique in lieu of the actual document.

Mr Marape also declared that he had a responsibility to build up the capabilities of the PNG defence force under the treaty, saying there were compelling reasons to draw much closer to Australia and benefit from its high end military technology.

And he insisted it was Papua New Guinea that had approached Australia asking for the new military alliance, not the other way around.

I hope this actually does help PNG. My last vestige of idealism is that Australia could actually partner with neighbouring countries and genuinely help improve peoples lives.

Realistically this is an attempt to keep capitalism alive in the region while the Chinese century is in the rough patch of Americas collapse.

Argentina Needs 6 More Months to Start Integrating First F-16s It Got Instead of Ukraine

These will be only first six of 24 F-16s sold by Denmark to Argentina with US backing, though they were meant for Ukraine

more

Argentina will only begin the transition period to integrate F-16 fighter jets, purchased secondhand from Denmark, into its Air Force in January 2026. That is one year and nine months after signing the acquisition deal. And this refers only to the first six of 24 jets, preparations for which are now in their final stage, according to Zona Militar. Before that, the country had received only one F-16BM Block 10 for technician training. According to plans, Argentina's operational use of F-16s will start closer to late 2026. The delivery of all 24 aircraft will stretch until 2028, with six aircraft arriving annually. This means it will take over four years to fully implement the program to strengthen the Argentine Air Force with used fighters.

All of this is happening with full support from the program's stakeholders. Argentine pilots and technicians are being trained by the private U.S. company Top Aces, which avoids bottlenecks in government training centers. Denmark, under the contract, is responsible for transporting the jets, as well as providing spare parts and upgrade elements. These peacetime timelines are quite telling, especially compared to Ukraine's fast-track integration and combat deployment of F-16s. The irony is that the very same used F-16s strengthening Argentina were originally meant to reinforce Ukraine's Air Force. But 24 of Denmark's F-16s — out of 44 (around 30 airwothy) became hostages to U.S. decisions.

Argentina urgently needed to renew its fleet, which consisted of about 20 A-4 Skyhawks in highly questionable flight condition. With Western fighters both too expensive and facing long delivery times, China aggressively pushed its Chengdu JF-17s on favorable credit terms. To block Beijing from gaining a foothold in South America's defense market, Washington insisted on the F-16 deal. But instead of U.S. F-16s, it was Denmark's fleet originally pledged to Ukraine that was redirected. Finally, in April 2024, a binding agreement was signed for Denmark to sell 24 F-16s to Argentina for $320 million only about $13.3 million per jet. However, the U.S. placed the cost of refurbishment and modernization at up to $941 million, offering a credit line to cover it.

In Argentina’s fighter competition, Washington and Beijing fight for regional influence

The global influence struggle between the United States and the People’s Republic of China has quietly arrived in America’s backyard, with Washington attempting to fend off Beijing establishing a sizeable military relationship with Argentina.

more

The competition, as it so often does between large powers, is playing out through a defense industrial decision: Namely, whether Buenos Aries buys second-hand Danish F-16 A/B Fighting Falcons or newly-made Chengdu JF-17 Thunder Block Three fighters from China. ... Meanwhile, multiple local outlets say Washington is putting pressure on Buenos Aires to pick the F-16 in order to deny China an expanded footprint in Latin America. Concern about China increasing its footprint in Latin America is hardly a secret. In August, US Southern Command head Gen. Laura Richardson spelled it out clearly, saying Chinese investment in the region means Beijing is “on the 20-yard line of our homeland, or we could say that they’re on the first and second island chain to our homeland and the proximity in terms of this region.” “There’s not a Chinese base yet in this hemisphere. But I see with all of this critical infrastructure investment,” Richardson added later, “that there could possibly be someday.”

Americans cannot conceptualize of another country engaging in international politics without building military bases all over the place

...

The Chengdu Factor

The continuing motivation to entice Buenos Aires to become the second South America F-16 customer after Chile is “keeping a PRC military presence off the continent. The reason the US F-16 offer is being promoted aggressively is to kill this Chinese JF-17 sale,” a veteran DoD Latin American analyst told Breaking Defense. ... By itself, the jet is no real threat to the US, but this initial JF-17 sale represents the proverbial “camel’s nose under the tent,” the analyst said — a way for China to make inroads in what the US considers its backyard. And naturally, any Chinese jet buy would come with Chinese infrastructure — PRC provided contractors and trainers, at the very least — the kind of footprint Richardson raised concerns about over the summer. If the JF-17 lands in Argentina, the analyst added, it’s possible China would offer a cheap deal for the J-10 fighter, a CAC product with a longer range and payload capacity. Or, potentially, the J-20, a design that incorporates a stealthy, blended-shape and can reach targets up to 1,200 miles from base. Either would benefit China’s goal of having a greater military footprint in the region. “The real nightmare for a number of defense planners in Washington would be a customer in the southern hemisphere that would amount to an operating base for the latest Chinese defense and aerospace platforms in the US’s backyard,” the analyst said.

...

The US is walking its own balance. Argentina’s Armed Forces have been almost exclusively aligned with the US in the past century. That “customer intimacy,” as US defense industry marketing personnel describe it, gives Washington an advantage in any procurement. But according to a report from La Nacion, the unspoken quid pro quo is that Buenos Aires would be banking on Washington’s support to resolve its debt repayment problems with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). One other potentially tricky issue is the fact Denmark has also pledged F-16s to Ukraine’s defense. Over the last two months, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway have all agreed to send some of their aircraft: 19 from the Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF), 42 from the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) and possibly as many as 10 from the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF). Satisfying both Argentina and Ukraine’s needs would seem to be difficult, the total number of the DSCA notification for Argentina, plus the 19 promised to Ukraine, would likely exceed the available inventory. Officials familiar with the offers to both air forces state Denmark will be allocating aircraft to meet Kyiv’s requirement, as well as the initial tranche offer to Buenos Aires; exactly how this will all shake out eventually remains unclear.

Tariffs and fentanyl issue cloud prospects of Donald Trump-Xi Jinping summit in Beijing

highlights

US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent on Sunday met Chinese vice-premier He Lifeng in Madrid for a fourth round of negotiations that some hope will pave the way for President Trump to visit Beijing just before the October 31 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in South Korea.

But insufficient progress in the US-China talks have reduced the odds of a Beijing summit and made it more likely that Trump and Xi will hold a lower profile meeting at Apec, according to people familiar with the situation.

One person familiar with the talks said a big stumbling block was US frustration at Beijing for not cracking down on export of chemicals used to make fentanyl, a deadly synthetic opioid. Beijing has offered to take action, but only in tandem with the US eliminating fentanyl-related tariffs that Trump imposed on China. The US insists that China should take action and show results before any tariff relief.

Recent developments have also cast doubt on whether the pieces will fall into place for a summit in Beijing. Trump on Saturday urged Nato countries to impose 50-100 per cent sanctions on China to pressure Beijing to stop it buying oil from Russia. That came days after he urged the EU to impose a 100 per cent levy on imports from China.

“The Chinese are willing to host without conditions but, so long as parts of the administration say a fentanyl package must be implemented first, the US will remain the obstacle to a visit,” said the former official

Evan Medeiros, a China expert at Georgetown University, said whether Trump would go to Beijing would be a “very close call in the history of close calls” and would “depend on Trump and come down to the last minute”.
