[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 34 points 4 months ago

I’ve been saying for years I need someone to make Alcohol That’s Good For You but this isn’t what I meant

[–] dumpster_dove@hexbear.net 56 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Where's the tobacco lobby during all this? They could stage a comeback and make smoking healthy again!

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 47 points 4 months ago (3 children)

There's been a big wave of Gen Z'ers growing a mustache, a mullet, and smoking cigarettes for the aura.

Someone should to a material analysis of how this declining economy is making the youth reminiscent of a time they were not alive to experience but were told were the golden days.

[–] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

This study brought to you by the alcoholic dad from the Kelly comics.

Hegseth drunkenly toasting himself in the hotel mirror while a rerun of Mad Men plays in the background. “Don you’ve done it again” he slurs. “Let’s see how those bastards at Rolling Rock think of me now that I’m a Lucky Strike account like Mr Draper”

He tosses back another highball.

I'm always in awe of how everything the US government does is "this dog shit thing? It's good, actually"

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 36 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Amazing how quickly shit like this comes around when profits start to fall.

100% I just posted an article a few days ago about how bourbon is in a free fall

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 22 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Wine too.. there are vineyards in California that are just straight destroying their crops because sales are falling so quickly and they don't want to have hundreds of tons of rotting grapes to clean up.

Personal thesis, of course we have all known it's bad for you, don't need a study to tell you that self poisoning is probably unhealthy. But with inflation doing what it has done alcohol is an easy category to cut back on, in the case of young people by going out less, and for us nightly drinking uncs by moving down market

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 27 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] Townlately@feddit.nl 10 points 3 months ago

Yeah, I mean, I never stopped so I know it's definitely not healthy.

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 18 points 3 months ago (4 children)

I’ve known barely functional alcoholics who’ve described themselves as “moderate” drinkers.

I mean in general, I’ve known plenty of people who were/are consuming something or doing something that’s obviously bad, or at least not good for them who’ve told me that it’s good for you in “moderate” amounts, which coincidentally happened to be whatever amount they partook in.

Also the comments on that article are 90% unverifiable personal anecdotes about how they or their relatives lived to 150 drinking 50 gallons of pure alcohol a day so it’s gotta be good for you

[–] hollowmines@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago

I kind of suspect having the kind of easygoing routine that allows for a consistent 2 martini a night experience for decades just might have had a lot more to do with the longevity than the drinking itself

[–] lil_tank@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago

So you mean "moderate drinker" works the same as "moderate right"

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

So if George Burns lived to 100 on one martini a day, this guy will live to be 200 right? I think I just discovered the secret to immortality!

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I mean two martinis in a night isn't extreme alcoholism lol

[–] Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

If you read the recommendations by health experts, that is pretty close to extreme alcoholism.

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 0 points 3 months ago

Then extreme alcoholism is not very severe

[–] MidnightPocket@hexbear.net 17 points 3 months ago

oh thank god I was worried

if you're wondering how a study can reach this kind of conclusion, they don't take into account other health factors like wealth and immigration status, and most concerning past drinking. turns out a lot of people that don't drink in the west are people that were heavy drinkers that quit or are trying to quit.
