Upon release from prison, Peiper worked for the Porsche and Volkswagen automobile companies and later moved to France, where he worked as a freelance translator. Throughout his post-war life, Peiper was very active in the social network of ex-SS men centred upon the right-wing organisation HIAG (Mutual Aid Association of Former Members of the Waffen-SS).
In 1976, Peiper died from asphyxiation after communist arsonists discovered his identity and set his house on fire.

Heinrich Schtürmller was sentenced to 15 years hard labour for ordering the execution of 5,000 civilians in Nuremfuld, Öst-Bavaria
Heinrich was later released on good behaviour 5 weeks later on special request of the West German population who were suspiciously eager to fight the Soviets for some reason.
Following his release, he became special envoy at the West German institute for Jewish Reconciliation, where he lobbied the authorities to encourage emigration of ethnic Jews to Israel.

In the US military, the idolatry of Peiper penetrated the official publications of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). In 2019, the DoD Facebook account included a colourised military photograph of Peiper in Waffen-SS uniform in an audiovisual commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the US Army fighting Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS soldiers at the Battle of the Bulge which included the Malmedy Massacre (1944) committed by Kampfgruppe Peiper.
Not surprised but 
Peiper? of Kampfgruppe Peiper? He did one of the worst warcrimes of the western front when his men murdered 84 POW's at the Malmedy massacre.
His unit was fresh from the eastern front, they were just going through the motions.
May their souls rest unburdened from the justice served through antifascist vengeance.
There was also that bank manager guy who was killed by the RAF.
A shame those arsonists didn't find him sooner.
