He recently did an interview discussing how media distracts from important issues, and essentially one of the things he discussed in the interview is that he had no interest in Black Sabbath’s music or Ozzy Osbourne’s music/career and referred to his TV show as “idiocy and nonsense”, and the media is acting like he just pissed on Ozzy’s grave and slapped his kids in the face or something.

Is it a bit blunt saying that 5/6 weeks after he died? Sure. But the media is going as far as to refer to him as “unhinged” over it. He didn’t even insult Ozzy as a person, just said that he never cared for his music or media presence.

I just don’t see how any of what he said is that big of a deal, but I’d be interested to hear other opinions on this.

they hate roger waters because he has unflinchingly called israelis nazis for a long time. they'll pounce on him for anything they think they can get people to go along with at this point.

[–] ephemeral@hexbear.net 44 points 3 months ago

IIRC he also pointed out the hypocrisy of boycotting and sanctioning Russia after the Ukraine invasion, and criticized the US / NATO for their role in the war. he's been a consistent anti-war voice and the liberal media doesn't like that

[–] jack@hexbear.net 41 points 3 months ago

Not just that, he's basically a full blown tankie. He rules and is politically active so they fucking hate his guts with all their hearts.

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 31 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yeah I do believe this is the main reason it’s even getting so much attention. The hate for Roger Waters seems extremely manufactured and this has only further solidified that for me.

[–] Llituro@hexbear.net 26 points 3 months ago (1 children)

it's never helped that david gilmour is more than happy to add as much fuel on the fire as the media asks for at any given time.

I feel extremely gaslighted over the love for David Gilmour because the guy just comes across as a massive asshole to me.

I will never forget him criticising Roger Waters for making a new album out of The Wall outtakes only to eventually do the exact same thing himself. He’s admitted to having made very little contributions to Pink Floyd’s music during the Animals - The Final Cut period purely out of laziness and has the nerve to dismiss Roger’s own contributions when he was the only one pulling Pink Floyd along.

Honestly seems like he’s the one provoking Roger Waters these days.

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 22 points 3 months ago

Waters is an asshole too, but he actually believes in and tries to defend human flourishing while Gilmour is a hack reactionary profiting off of the work of incomparably superior artists and opportunistic zionism.

[–] Tormato@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

Is that right, about little contributions to Animals?

That is very definitely one of my all-time favorite records. And not in the least because of the soaring, impassioned, melodic leads on Dogs.

(Folks, if you don't know that tune it ranks as one of the great anti-capitalist takedowns, of how alienating and compromising, exploitative and demoralizing a system it truly is in our every day lives.

You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need. You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street, You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed. And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight, You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking. And after a while, you can work on points for style. Like the club tie, and the firm handshake, A certain look in the eye and an easy smile. You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to, So that when they turn their backs on you, You'll get the chance to put the knife in.

You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder. You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you get older. And in the end you'll pack up and fly down south, Hide your head in the sand, Just another sad old man, All alone and dying of cancer.

And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown. And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone. And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around.

So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone, Dragged down by the stone.

I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused. Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used. Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise. If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?

Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend. And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner And everything's done under the sun, And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.

Who was born in a house full of pain Who was trained not to spit in the fan Who was told what to do by the man Who was broken by trained personnel Who was fitted with collar and chain Who was given a pat on the back Who was breaking away from the pack Who was only a stranger at home Who was ground down in the end Who was found dead on the phone Who was dragged down by the stone.

I'm sorry, PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong.

Is Roger Waters a lib? I'm not sure, because I really think I might be thinking of another member of Pink Floyd (or another band), but I'm sure that one of them was a Ukraine lib, but I can't remember.

[–] GamersOfTheWorld@hexbear.net 15 points 3 months ago (1 children)

After some investigation, I believe I'm thinking of David Gilmour.

[–] mayakovsky@hexbear.net 41 points 3 months ago (2 children)

his TV show as “idiocy and nonsense”

I thought this was widely agreed upon

[–] Esoteir@hexbear.net 27 points 3 months ago (2 children)

it's been over two decades but wasn't the show literally just the usual reality TV slop with manufactured drama -> ad break formula shit?

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 22 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I think it was a pioneer in the genre, or at least one of the early hits, which is what makes it notable despite being objectively dreck.

[–] tim_curry@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

The Osbournes is to the Kardashians as the UK office is to the US office. It was extremely popular and created a genre of reality TV.

I'm pretty sure Ozzy was in on the joke too.

[–] Weedian@hexbear.net 29 points 3 months ago

i like black sabbath but ozzy's show WAS idiocy and nonsense

[–] Cat_Daddy@hexbear.net 19 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Love Roger Waters' music, and I love Ozzy's stuff, too. People have opinions. Plenty of folks have said similar things about Roger's work, too. Media dorks just need to get over it.

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 15 points 3 months ago

Exactly my thoughts. Thought I was losing it because I seemed to be the only person who wasn’t calling for Roger’s head.

[–] WIIHAPPYFEW@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago

For a solid ten seconds I thought this was abt JOHN Waters lmfao

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 12 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I read the title as "Mr. Rogers" and thought this was some kind of bit.

So I have no clue who any of these people are, but just a single cursory search on yt for Roger Waters has like, most of the top videos be about this "drama"

This "outrage" definitely feels manufactured on some level

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

He was the talented one of the surviving members of Pink Floyd (Although he is no longer a member).

As a guitarist, I honestly find David Gilmour to be overhyped.

He’s not a bad guitarist, just a one trick pony. Most of his solos are good, but he’s an extremely basic rhythm player and his fingerstyle skills are practically nonexistent. They actually had to hire another guitarist to perform “Is There Anybody Out There?” because David Gilmour couldn’t play it properly (it’s an extremely basic fingerstyle pattern that anyone with basic fingerstyle skills could get the hang of relatively quickly.)

Here's a good interview with Waters from a few months back, if anyone's interested.

I think the cancelling of Roger Waters was totally unjustified, and his politics are pretty based afaict, but... dude loves drama. The last time he blew up he had this speech he would give, and he would start crying part way through, and tbh it all seemed very rehearsed and quite cynical
