At least the mayor knows what's up:

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson swiftly condemned the action.

"He just wants his own secret police force that will do publicity stunts whenever his poll numbers are sinking, whenever his jobs report shows a stagnating economy, whenever he needs another distraction from his failures," he told reporters.

"whenever he needs another distraction from his failures". Very nicely stated; clear, accurate, and to the point.

In this case, it's not just performative, it is also evidence in the inevitable court proceedings that are about to happen regarding this. All the Chicago and Illinois politicians need to be very vocal that these troops are not wanted, and there is no emergency (other than whatever havoc these troops will cause).

Fair warning, but Brandon Johnson is kinda ass as a mayor, with a somewhat dysfunctional appointment group

Hes kind of back and forth with some things good and some bad. Good speaker though which is good to have atm.

Are we that scary to trump? He's willing to go in on LA but not Chicago?

[–] loie@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You have no idea how terrified conservatives are of Chicago. Seriously, it's the fuckin Boogeyman to them. I'm not kidding, not exaggerating, not hyperbole. Multiple conservatives in my life have looked at me like I'm insane for taking my family there on vacations.

Because this city was built on the foundations of Our Thing.

I have some pretty conservative family members none of whom live in Illinois, but they are all Cubs fans and went to Chicago for vacations too. I guess I missed out on this weird aspect of conservatism.

They feel that way about all cities, but they often use Chicago as a catch-all

The courts just ruled yesterday that sending the NG to LA against the governors wishes was illegal.

He may be holding off until it goes to the Supreme Court and gets overruled there.

Either the recent ruling against him is having an effect and our checks and balances are checking and balancing, or he's worried about the reaction if they send troops here. I will take either of those as a win.

We can cut off supplies of beef sandwiches and stuffed pizza to the white house.

Guard troops should be under the control of the governor. Regardless of what state they come from. Just roll in and start ordering them to run soup kitchens, clean up trash and help out in schools, homeless shelters, etc.

Trump isn't going to show up to stop them

[–] zib@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

No, but he'll send ICE to deport the National Guard. I wish I could say I was joking, but he would actually do something that stupid.

[–] Brotha_Jaufrey@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

This country is a joke, man. What are we even doing at this point? Are MAGAs seriously looking at this and believing this will “save” America?

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

"We". As if he would - or even could - put his sorry ass in line.
