[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 30 points 3 days ago

ah but we use that wrong and most people just heard bugs bunny say it to elmer fudd, not realizing that it's the hunting equivalent of responding to a bad idea with "yeah ok einstein"

in TECKS-ASS we don't call it Al-gebra or Al-cohol... we call it number-math and kiss-my-dad water.

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago

Arabic numerals? In my maths?

But they actually unironically were like that back in the 80s when anti-Japanese racism was at its peak. They called them "tidal waves" despite having nothing to do with the tide.

Angrily calling the secretary of the Navy, insisting they be called "Ocean Generals," not Admirals.

Starting to call it sweetsalt instead of sugar

Using roman numerals because our current ones are arabic. The number zero is overrated, anyway.

Wait, Italiano numbers? Don't we just have the good ole murican ones?

This has been "journalism" for a while. Y'all remember all the rhetoric around when a bunch of maga folks started getting riled up over NPR tweeting the declaration of independence? It was like 3 people, yet every news outlet needed a story on it.

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 29 points 3 days ago

I do not admit, for example, that a great wrong has been done to the people of Texas by virtue of the fact that a better word, a more concise word, a funnier word, to put it that way, has come in and taken dust storm's place.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 27 points 3 days ago (1 children)

weather is turning woke!!

Southerns who can't consider there's more than 1 type of dust storms

One time I was helping my parents by meeting with their well guy to pull and replace their well pump and he got into politics for some very dumb reason. He started ranting about how Houston is wasting our tax dollars (everyone involved in this conversation lives outside Houston) that could be spent on the national debt instead. I had to explain to him that Houston doesn't use federal tax dollars, they use money taxed from residents, and not only city but even state services are completely unrelated to federal taxes or the deficit. This man was in his late 40s at the time. Most Americans would need years of re-education to become even marginally functional citizens.

[–] CrispyFern@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

We have the opportunity to call something a haboob and they're too racist to seize it?! Just imagine the golden age of Uranus-style puns we could be experiencing right now sicko-wistful

[–] mathemachristian@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago

"We get massive haboobs every summer"

"The last haboob knocked my power out"

"Must be a slow news day they're milking this one haboob for everything its got"
