Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

The person accidentally added to the group chat, which appears to contain six people, said they had no idea why they had received these messages, and shared screenshots of the chat with 404 Media. 404 Media granted the person anonymity to protect them from retaliation.

One of six will not be hard to find… I mean, what?

Can we take a second and appreciate the person who got these messages and took them to the media? Putting myself in their shoes, I’d be scared shitless and you can easily see how it might make you a target. Good on you random citizen, I appreciate you.

I want to know how difficult it will be for them to look back at their texts, extract the phone number, and backtrace it to the owner. Because I don't think it will be very difficult.

Exactly. This citizen’s identity is not a secret to the people in the convo. It’s a brave move and I respect the hell out of it.

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 19 points 8 months ago

Yeah, I'd say they should only have shared it with the news if the news also named and identified them clearly every time the photos are shared. Corruption dies in sunlight. The dangerous ones already know, might as well hang a lantern on any attempts at retaliation.

It’s incredibly easy, in fact there’s already a website where you can do it yourself. Put in a phone number, address, or name, and you’ll be amazed and disturbed by how much information can be connected to you. https://www.truepeoplesearch.com/

Gotta make one wonder how often this happens

[–] AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social 129 points 8 months ago (1 children)

And it wasn't even Signal, an actually encrypted platform this time.

It was SMS & MMS. As in, the known to be very low security, non-encrypted protocols used for basic texting.

But were they clear on opsec?

[–] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 8 points 8 months ago

I suppose the phrase "Do not do opsec." is clear at least.

This shit is really pissing me off! When do I get an invite to these group chats? I feel so left out right now.

[–] Zron@lemmy.world 16 points 8 months ago

I just wanna shitpost to the fedbois group chat.

Just start trauma dumping while they’re talking about arresting some grandma or some shit.

Sounds like someone pulled a Mike Waltz

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 21 points 8 months ago (2 children)

omg like there are really, really easy ways to prevent operational security leaks like this.

[–] GuyFawkes@midwest.social 22 points 8 months ago

Good thing they’re too dumb to know that. They ain’t called Y’all Queada for nothing!

[–] Manifish_Destiny@lemmy.world 5 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I doubt half these cunts can even tie their own shoes.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 18 points 8 months ago (1 children)

at least the nazis are dumb

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 8 months ago

no, we’re dumb….

about an active search for a convicted attempted murderer seemingly marked for deportation

most of the people they’ve been hunting have no criminal record or just minor offenses: this was likely leaked on purpose to further the narrative that they’re going after violent criminals only….

[–] fittedsyllabi@lemmy.world 17 points 8 months ago

So Hegseth is in this too, eh?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 15 points 8 months ago (3 children)

If I ever am invited to one of these chats, should I iust observe and document everything or keep interrupting and prevent them from doing any organizing? 🤔

[–] BremboTheFourth@piefed.ca 19 points 8 months ago

Definitely document. You interrupt, they'll just remove you or make a new group chat and move on. Document and disseminate.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Post cat pictures immediately to the thread

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 8 months ago

It wouldn't even give me away as not belonging!

"Uh... I'm here. I'm live. I'm not a cat."

[–] GuyFawkes@midwest.social 5 points 8 months ago

Disrupt immediately. Now is certain; tomorrow isn’t.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 12 points 8 months ago

I'm not sure if I could fuck up this hard if I tried.
