Funded by public money through taxes, now have to be funded directly through donations from the public. While the public still gets taxed. Hmmm.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 23 points 3 days ago

Duh!

This is a favorite GOP tactic for decades. Back when the Supreme Court cared about the law, the Right would pass anti-abortion laws that they knew would be struck down. But since they were in power, they could use tax payer money to pay for the cases. Meanwhile, people on the Left had pick and choose where their money went, to a good candidate or to the legal funds?

The same group that wants small government also has no problem asking you to donate at church and also to Jimmy's gofundme.

[–] iopq@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

That's the point, the people who like church and Jimmy can fund those things. The government church tax exemption means churches make profits and it's at the expense of everyone, including atheists

[–] Azal@pawb.social 1 points 3 days ago

Fuck them asking you to donate at church. They want the tax dollars to go to private schools operated by their churches.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 16 points 4 days ago

Good point! Perhaps we should send the state police to confiscate those funds as well?

Not a great precedent. "See, we don't even need to use our tax dollars for this!"

This is like the "churches and charities will provide the safety nets" bullshit that libertarians say.

If you care about PBS and NPR it's a good thing. Sounds like you care more about political points

No. I care about having an independent public media that's funded through progressive taxation.

The entire point of things like this is to move everything away from that and it's ruining this country.

There is a reason they're privatizing everything, and it has nothing to do with cutting the deficit.

[–] iopq@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

You want to force everyone to pay for a thing that you want. I think the donors paying for a thing they want is more fair. Not everyone enjoys NPR, why should public funds go to NPR when it only benefits the people who will listen to it?

Let's not pretend there aren't many great sources of news and commentary that are accessible on the web. I listen to NPR because I'm in a car and I didn't get a podcast ready

Which was great and all until trump raised the Standard Deduction, so now you have to donate a lot more for it to count towards your taxes.

I know most people don't donate for tax purposes, but it does remove an incentive.

[–] iopq@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Raising the standard deduction is actually really good because it helps low income individuals the most. Someone with a million dollars income won't see much difference in their tax rate, but for low income individuals it can represent significant increases in take home income

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 34 points 3 days ago

I doubt it'll last though. Hopefully it lasts at least long enough for a sane administration to get back in office.

[–] heyWhatsay@slrpnk.net 14 points 3 days ago

I donated my old vehicle, they towed it for free

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

My employer has a 1:1 match so I just started a monthly donation.

[–] Ragnor@feddit.dk 2 points 3 days ago

If you get the chance, thank them for doing it. I don't have money to spare, but I really enjoy their science channels on YouTube.
