Well, it bears mentioning that before labor laws were a thing, the way to negotiate labor disputes with the boss used to be “hey boss, me and the boys want a raise, and if you don’t like it we’ll burn the fucking factory down and break your kneecaps”.

Striking by choice??? What other type of strike is there?

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 11 points 2 days ago

Forced strikes, aka when you're fired.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I guess if you're in a union and voted against the strike?

But even then, nothing but their dignity is preventing them from crossing the picket line... Nobody is forcing them to strike.

[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah you cross a picket line at a union shop and good luck ever seeing a promotion. For that matter could lose your job. (They’d just call it, underperforming issues but they’d wait a couple months before firing you).

Yeah the owners wouldn’t care if you crossed but your immediate supervisor is probably union and pissed that you crossed.

Yeah which is why you don't do it.

But nobody is stopping them. It's not illegal, nor are they being prevented by force.

[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I’m sorry, but I have to disagree with your statement of nobody is stopping them. If there’s a threat of losing your job, then in essence, they are stopped.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 19 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Of course they're coming for the right to strike.

Anyone who was like "taking away the ability to strike is nbd, those rail workers got what they wanted," I don't want to see you acting like this isn't exactly what you want.

And the rail workers got a fraction of what they wanted.

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm sure that we can trust that the white house will keep working behind the scenes for these workers and get them better conditions after taking away any abilities they have to do that for themselves /s

Man, remember when people were saying that unironically a few years ago?

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

And then spent all of 2024 lying that biden was doing anything to pressure netanyahu "behind the scenes."

"Behind the scenes" was always a lie.

Kinda upset that no one makes a big deal about connecting the rail strikes with the East Palestine incident. Like, the president interferes with a union negotiation, revokes their right to strike in order to "save Christmas," then a major incident occurs three months later because the boss ordered the workers to ignore safety issues while transferring hazardous chemicals. To me, this seems like low hanging fruit to rile up voters and start pushing for change, but it all just... faded away.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 1 points 1 day ago

That'd require the left to gasp upset neoliberals, which would jeopardize the two sides' Stockholm Syndrome-fueled abusive relationship. You can probably guess who the abusive side is.

the right to strike

Lol what a hilarious notion...

Oh no, they said I'm not allowed to strike, I guess that's that. Oh well, back to work.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think you'll find that labor movements function better without government crackdowns.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah... However events like that can also have a galvanizing effect

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You have that much faith in Americans? Because I sure as hell don't.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago

I was just talking about the concept of "illegal strikes" in general

[–] return2ozma@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

Hate the source but it's the only one I could find talking about it after seeing it on socials.

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

TIL that striking workers could get unemployment. I thought the terms for collecting it were fairly specific.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Unemployment is fairly easy to get. How many hours have you worked in the past x months/year?
