Image is from this article, of a Chilean copper quarry.

Title is a reference to Trump's social media post about copper, which was, as usual, mostly deranged.

Trying to follow Trump's administration is pretty difficult, but as of right now, he is threatening 30% tariffs on Mexico and the EU starting on August 1st, as well as new tariff announcements on a bunch of other countries (including, bizarrely, a 50% tariff on Brazil), and also apparently a 50% tariff on copper, which the US imports half its supply of and is, of course, a very important metal in many applications.

I'm not sure what the plan is to bring back domestic copper production beyond hoping that it just sorta works out, but prominent copper producers, such as Chile and Canada, seem both concerned and confused. Reuters had a line that made me chuckle:

Boric said he was awaiting official communication from the U.S. government, including whether the tariffs would include copper cathodes, and questioned "whether this will actually be implemented or not."

Big mood, Boric.

Today: Pro-Palestine demo in Tallinn, Estonia

Police were present, no arrests made as far i know right now. Police did seemingly question the organisers and i saw two extra police cars roll up near the end (totalling three), don't know if that was coincidental or not. A hundred or two were present. Saw a guy with an EFF cap there which was cool, a few anarchists as well. Screamed "the Estonian flag is occupation!", i love 'em.

long-corbyn

Jeremy Corbyn is most popular politician among 16 and 17-year-olds

https://www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/jeremy-corbyn-is-most-popular-politician-among-16-and-17-year-olds-395699/

New polling by for ITV News asked 500 16-17 year olds for their thoughts on a range of political figures. Corbyn came out on top, with 12% saying they ‘strongly approve’ of him, versus 9% who said the same about Keir Starmer and Nigel Farage.

The figures with the highest approval were Greta Thunberg on 27%, YouTuber Mr Beast on 21%, and Jeremy Clarkson on 17%.

The young people surveyed said their most important issues were: the economy (30%), healthcare (28%), crime/ law and order (25%), Israel/Palestine (25%) and immigration (23%).

Issues like climate change, housing, and education were much further down the list.

The figures actually seem pretty tight, young people look open-ended to me and will require some very serious work. The left can not just expect them to fall in with us when figures like Clarkson and Tate have their ear.

Trump - Rutte press conference:

  • In 50 days, secondary tarrifs of 100% will be put in place if no ceasefire deal.

  • Trump says that the US is sending "top of the line weaponry" to Ukraine, paid for by European NATO members.

  • Rutte states it is both defensive and offensive weapons, and that this is just the first package. No details provided.

  • On PATRIOT batteries, Trump says 17 launchers, most of which will be sent within days (I think, Trump vocabulary is difficult to decipher), which works out to around three additional batteries.

Mike Huckabee, the US Ambassador to Israel and of course rabid Zionist evangelical believer in an imminent rapture, has said some mean things to Israel regarding their blocking of visa renewals for evangelical clergy.

According to The Times of Israel, which obtained a copy of the letter.

“If the government of Israel continues to cause the expense and bureaucratic harassment for the granting of routine visas that for decades have been routine, I will have no other choice than to instruct our consular section to review options for reciprocal treatment of Israeli citizens seeking visas to the United States,” Huckabee warned.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/huckabee-threatens-to-declare-israel-not-welcoming-christians-as-visa-row-blows-open/

Note that:

  1. This is about Evangelical Christians ability to obtain visas easily, not about the recent terrorist attack the IDF committed against a church in Gaza. Though you could say the timing is peculiar.

  2. Not in the article, but Huckabee is in Israel supporting Netanyahu (idk how just cheering him on i guess) in his corruption trial. The letter is also not addressed to the PM. So no serious divide will come of this in case that wasn't clear.

https://archive.ph/FyIgD whoops, MIC machine broke!

US diverts Patriot systems from Switzerland to Ukraine

U.S. officials have told the Swiss government that Patriot air defense systems in the production pipeline for the alpine country would be diverted to help defend Ukraine, according to a Swiss announcement. The July 17 statement by the Swiss, which said the notification from the United States arrived the prior day, illuminates some of the hasty mechanics behind Washington’s newfound emphasis on helping Ukraine repel near-constant Russian attacks with missiles and drones.

Switzerland ordered five Patriot systems, made by Ratheon, in 2022. Deliveries were set begin in 2026 and go through 2028. The U.S. foreign military process, which governs the sale, makes the diversion of defense goods possible, the Swiss announcement notes. No information was available about how many systems would be affected and what the new timing for future deliveries would be. Switzerland’s Patriot pick was part of a lengthy air-defense and air-policing review by the government that also led to an order of 36 U.S. F-35 fighter aircraft.

Last year, the United States told Switzerland that a batch of ordered PAC-3 MSE interceptors, the most advanced interceptors fireable with Patriot, would similarly be diverted to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Germany this week offered to buy two Patriot systems from the U.S. and give them to Ukraine. One Patriot setup costs roughly $1 billion, depending on the number of interceptors, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said during a visit to Washington on July 14. Details for the purchase are now under discussion with the U.S. administration, Pistorius said following talks with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Outstanding questions surrounding the transaction are all “solvable,” he added.

Speaking at the LandEuro conference in Wiesbaden, Germany, on July 17, top NATO commander U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus Grynkewich signaled a new dynamic in supplying Kyiv with the defensive weapons. Grynkewich said he would bring European nations together to work on delivering Patriot and other capabilities to Ukraine. The idea is to “look at what’s the art of the possible” in orchestrating the flow of new production equipment to Ukraine’s defense, he said.

Unlike Russia with its weak economy having to delay deliveries of equipment, the Western MIC is going strong! stonks-down

Radical-Islam Moderate-Islam by Hashem al-Haidari

spoilerAmerica talks about "moderate Islam" and "radical Islam". Ok, so what is "moderate Islam"? A "moderate" opposition? A "moderate" Islam? A "moderate" state?

The "moderate Islam" which America demands is an Islam that is devoid of soul, an Islam of just praying and fasting, an Islam of rites and rituals only. The Islam that America demands is an Islam that is devoid of Jihad, devoid of fighting, devoid of resistance. The Islam that America demands is an Islam that does not recognize Jihad, that denies the verses of Jihad, considering it exclusively only to the time of the Prophet (SAW).

The "moderate Islam" that America demands is one that begs acceptance and normalization from the International Community while accepting humiliation and obedience. The "moderate Islam" that America demands is an Islam that separates religion from politics; rather, it seperates religion from society.

The "moderate Islam" that America is satisfied with is an Islam that watches the war on Yemen without saying a word or denouncing! The "moderate Islam" that America demands is an Islam that watches the crimes of the Houses of al-Saud and al-Khalifah without denouncing or rejecting them. The "moderate Islam" that America demands is one that watches the crimes of israel without even issuing a piece of paper that denounces an operation, an act of rape, or a demolition there, and whatnot. The "moderate Islam" that America demands is an Islam that tells you not to support the oppressed in Pakistan, Syria, Palestine, Nigeria, Yemen, and so on.

The "moderate Islam" that America demands is one that does not believe in the Islamic Ummah, that does not believe in the necessity of us supporting each other, and the necessity of protecting the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is an Islamic State.

The "moderate Islam" that America demands is an Islam that differentiates between the Arabs and non-Arabs; an Islam that differentiates betweens Kuwaiti, Bahraini, Iraqi, Indian, Iranian and Turk; an Islam that doesn't believe in "Indeed the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is the most Godwary among you" (49:13).

It is an Islam that believes in Sykes-Picot and not in the Quran!

This is the Islam that America demands, which Imam Khomeini described thirty years ago as "American Islam".

As far as America's opinion about "radical Islam" is concerned, it is an Islam that America does not want; that is, the Islam that the Yazid of our time does not want. What Islam is this? In America, it is called "radical Islam".

Yes! I say again! The "radical Islam" that America rejects is the "radical Islam" against the oppression and tyranny of America. The Islam that America rejects—the Islam which calls for crying, tears, rituals, mowkibs, and the Arbaeen walk—the same Islam that calls to pick up a weapon to sacrifice souls and to stand against the enemies (of Islam).

Today, the Islam that America fights with and rejects is the Islam which believes that the religion is a religion of governance, a religion of authority; it believes in Jihad and resistance, a religion that guides society. As Shaheed Sayyid Baqir al-Sadr described it: "Islam guides life".

The genuine Islam that America rejects is the one that refuses to beg for Western laws, Western culture, and Western theories.

Today as I mention, America is playing a spiteful role and a dangerous conspiracy in misrepresenting Islam. They made ISIS, then ISIS kills. Anything now in the literature of ISIS, for example "Jihad" of ISIS is now rejected by us, the Islamic State is now rejected by us; that's how America has made it for us. "Jihad" now means shouting "Allahu Akbar" and slaughtering. Fighting for the sake of Allah means saying "Muhammad (SAW) is the Messenger of Allah," then ripping his stomach open.

This is what our understanding of Islam has become today. Any slogan that is presented by ISIS, America promotes it as if it is from Islam. As a result, some people—they could be naïve or they could have wicked intentions— they refuse EVERYTHING that ISIS says. What, then, did our religion become? It became the religion of mercy and pity only; neither fierce, confrontation, nor harshness. Who said that our religion doesn't have harshness? "And let them find severity in you, and know that Allah is with the Godwary." (9:123) Yes, against the disbelievers. "And those with him are firm with the disbelievers..." (48:29) If we are good, let there be no severity between us "merciful among themselves" (48:29). In reality, the harshness (severity) is between us and our compassion is for the faithless.

With an American-ISIS plan, the tool is ISIS. ISIS is a means, an evil tool. In all these years that have passed, Al-Qaeda, al-Nusra Front, and ISIS are just practicing aggressiveness, killing, and have changed the slogan of "Allahu Akbar" to represent slaughtering. The phrase "Allahu Akbar" now means something else, and so do other phrases such as "Jihad". If you see a long beard it means something else.

They portrayed the Wahhabis, Takfiris, and ISIS in such a way that many of us did not know how to treat this situation. As a result, the term "ISIS militias" was repeated on the TV — and we kept parroting "ISIS militias" — what did it become later? "The Popular Mobilization Militia", "Hezbollah Militias", "Houthi Militias".

In the beginning ISIS was an apparent goal, then it became a tool (of the Americans). For many of us now, and in the Arab and Islamic world — Inshallah it doesn't exist in Iraq — "Jihad" refers exclusively to ISIS; it falsely includes Hezbollah and the Popular Mobilization Units, and the media is presenting and showing them as "militias" (like ISIS). The result, therefore, is that many people in the world today reject the Popular Mobilization Units, reject Hezbollah, and reject the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The reason for this is ISIS: an evil American conspiracy to misrepresent Islam!

-Sayyid Hashim Al-Haidari

Former BDS Movement economist Shir Hever's interview on Electronic Intifada last week

I thought this was a good watch. Gets into a number of facets regarding the Israeli economy. But I thought the most interesting part was when he got into the subject of the ultra-orthodox and Iran. I don't recall if this was mentioned in the news mega before, but apparently the ultra-orthodox wing of Netanyahu's coalition was planning to vote no confidence in the government / leave the coalition over the issue of conscription. This vote was scheduled for... June 13th (the day of the Iran attack). When the attack happened, the vote didn't materialize and now they can't go for it again for another six months. Interesting...

I do believe the IOF is short of manpower, and the conscription of the ultra-orthodox will eventually be a necessity if they want to continue war in Gaza (or start something in Lebanon or Syria). Justin Podur thinks the recent rumors of a ceasefire are coming from the army themselves, as they are telling the politicians they can't / don't want to continue fighting in all ways but open ones; and I think that notion has merit.

No time to waste: NATO chief urges rapid industrial mobilization

As the U.S. and its allies in Europe pledge to ramp up defense spending amid mounting global threats, the supreme allied commander of Europe is calling on industry to deliver real capabilities to the field in record time. “We can tell industry exactly what it is that we need for all the leaders that are out there. It’s our job, I think, to hold industry accountable to deliver quickly and to hold ourselves accountable for giving industry the ability to deliver quickly through our acquisition processes,” U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus Grynkewich said July 17 during his first public speech since taking command at the Association of the U.S. Army’s inaugural LandEuro conference in Wiesbaden, Germany.

"hold industry accountable"? Uh, yeah pal, it's called nationalization and economic planning, but I'm afraid that's all lost technology, even the Adeptus Mechanicus can't figure out what it was all about. We just don't know!

“We’ve got to do this fast. We need real capabilities and we need them delivered as soon as possible. We can’t afford to wait, future pledges are no longer enough,” he said. “To do this, the defense industrial base on both sides of the Atlantic is going to have to become fully activated.” Grynkewich stressed there’s plenty of work to go around, it’s not a matter of investing in one or the other. “It needs to be one seamless industrial base that can deliver capability and capacity for the alliance,” he said. Moving quicker is easier said than done. Every country will have to contend with their own budget approval process and work through red tape across borders.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth made a pledge earlier this year on a trip to NATO headquarters that the U.S. would conduct major foreign military sales reform. Even so, the U.S. military and NATO have developed solid regional plans beginning with a clear one focused on the Baltic States that will help guide government and industry in getting capabilities to units there. The U.S. Army Europe and Africa commander, speaking a day earlier at the conference, said the “Eastern Flank Deterrence Line” plan aims to enhance ground-based capabilities and drive military-industrial interoperability across the alliance.

As part of the plan to counter Russian threats and enable scalable, global deterrence, the Army and its NATO allies are urgently developing standardized, data-driven systems, common launchers and cloud-based coordination. The plan includes a system to share data. NATO has already procured that system – Palantir’s Maven Smart System – an artificial intelligence platform that takes a vast amount of data and rapidly analyzes information to help military commanders make decisions. U.S. Army Europe and Africa officials have also adopted Maven at headquarters, using it for mission command and visibility across the theater. The system has completely replaced PowerPoint briefings and offers information to commanders in real-time.

you know what's going to drag us out of our deindustrialization quagmire? that's right, THE CLOUD! AND AI!

On NATO’s wish list, according to Grynkewich, are capabilities that mirror a Ukrainian brigade. “How do we get our brigades to have the same level of capability where we can match what they’re able to do today?”

ah, so they're finally admitting that the Ukrainians are way ahead of them in terms of adaptation to the modern battlefield... but wait, aren't those guys, like, not doing too good? Uh oh! columbo-donk

Additionally, Grynkewich said he wants to focus on air defense. “There’s never enough air defense. You always want more, but it’s an acute requirement, whether it’s counter-[unmanned aircraft systems] or counter-ballistic missiles,” he said. And there will also be a continued focus on long-range fires, Grynkewich noted. “We need the capability to hold things at risk.”

Industry now has real incentives in place, Grynkewich said, with the new commitment made by NATO nations at the last summit to spend 5% of their gross domestic product on defense by 2035. “I would ask industry folks who are here and elsewhere to realize that sustained commitment should be a powerful signal to do the things you need to do, to expand production lines, to increase [research and development] spending, etc., so that we can get where we need to go,” he said.

"a signal to do the things you need to do" y'know, maybe you shouldn't need to fucking "signal" industry, like "oh pretty please expand your production lines, c'mon guys!", maybe you should be able to, I dunno, order them to do so?

Leadership is now moving to deliver new and emerging technology to the battlefield along with legacy technology that is still relevant and will work to make things interoperable. “I challenge each of the chiefs of defense, land forces commanders and every leader in here to hold themselves to account for that. There’s no time to waste,” Grynkewich said.

this guy really loves holding stuff accountable I guess

maddened The portuguese socialist party has reached new levels of low, the socialist party mayor of Loures sent machines to demolish a neighborhood of 60 shacks where over 100 people live because they can't find housing anywhere else, much like many people in portugal. The mayor informed the inhabitants so late that they had little time to file a complaint, but they did and the district court ordered the demolitions to stop but the mayor has proclaimed that the demolitions will continue.

This prompted cries of condemnation from party members and hails of support from...also party members including the current socialist party leader, as well as from the right, which is cheering this on.

The communist party lost the mayorship of Loures by 3%(around what other parties left of the PS got) in 2021 after leading it for 2 terms, and since the socialist party took over not a single piece of new housing was built, there are local election later this year and this move is being seen as a pretty transparent campaign act to show "mercilessness" for people who build their own, technically illegal, housing to allegedly "skip over waiting lines", as well as a pandering move to the current extremely anti-immigration mood in portugal. Of note is that Loures is also where the far-right party leader got his start with a mayoral campaign when he was still inside the center-right party.

Portugal has a history of shack towns and neighborhoods, back in the estado novo period they were everywhere and it was seen as a success of the revolution that for years the central and local governments made efforts to relocate the people to proper housing BEFORE demolishing the shacks, so the return of shacks is a sign of how bad the housing situation is and the act of demolishing like this is a sign of how politically things have changed.

China Biotech’s Stunning Advance Is Changing the World’s Drug Pipeline Bloomberg

Chinese biotech's advance has been as ferocious as the nation's breakthrough efforts in AI and EVs, eclipsing the EU and catching up to the US

The biotechnology industry is experiencing a tectonic shift, driven by Chinese drugmakers who have come a long way from their copycat days to challenge Western dominance on innovation.

The number of novel drugs in China — for cancer, weight-loss and more — entering into development ballooned to over 1,250 last year, far surpassing the European Union and nearly catching up to the US’s count of about 1,440, an exclusive Bloomberg News analysis showed. And the drug candidates from the land once notorious for cheap knock-offs and quality issues are increasingly clearing high bars to win recognition from both drug regulators and Western pharmaceutical giants.

The findings, gleaned from an analysis of a database maintained by pharma intelligence solutions provider Norstella, show a fundamental shift in medical innovation’s center of gravity. With President Donald Trump already threatening tariffs on the pharmaceutical sector, China's biotech advances — the scale of which is slowly coming into view — risk becoming another realm of superpower rivalry like artificial intelligence and electric vehicles.

“The scale itself is not something we’ve seen before,” said Helen Chen, managing partner at LEK Consulting in Shanghai, who has advised healthcare companies on their China strategy since 2003. “The products are here, they’re attractive and they’re fast.”

This shift has occurred at an unprecedented pace. When China began to overhaul its drug regulatory system in 2015, the country had just 160 compounds to contribute to the global pipeline of innovative drugs, or less than 6% of the total, behind Japan and the UK. The reforms helped streamline reviews, enforced data quality standards and improved transparency. The government’s ‘Made in China 2025’ plan to elevate manufacturing in 10 priority sectors also helped spur a flurry of investments in biotechnology. Altogether, they unleashed a boom led by foreign-educated and -trained scientists and entrepreneurs.

“Not only is it now almost at parity with the US but it has that growth trajectory,” said Daniel Chancellor, vice president of thought leadership at Norstella. “It wouldn’t be sensationalist to suggest that China will overtake the US in the next few years purely in terms of numbers of drugs that it’s bringing through into its pipeline.”

Brazil will officially join the lawsuit that South Africa is bringing against Israel at the United Nations (UN) International Court of Justice. The South African government, successor to the apartheid regime, accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. Brazil will be a third party in the case.

A Brazilian diplomat told the column that Brazil considers that Israel “is making it clear that it will continue to disregard diplomacy, doing whatever it wants against Palestinian civilians”. According to him, this is happening not only in Gaza but also in the West Bank, “which has never had anything to do with Hamas”.

That's why “the time has come” to act on other fronts. The decision is likely to generate reactions from Israel and has the potential to aggravate the US government's attacks on Brazil. It is believed that the Brazilian government was already going to join South Africa's lawsuit against Israel, but that it was accelerated by the attacks of the US government and Trump against Brazilian sovereignty, the Brazilian government and the Brazilian people.

China’s Ministry of State Security warns of foreign espionage attempts to smuggle rare earths via shipping channels

spoiler

China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) reminded on Friday that foreign espionage and intelligence agencies have attempted to collude with and recruit domestic lawbreakers to steal China’s rare earth-related items through shipping and delivery channels, posing a serious threat to national security.

A certain country lacks the capability to independently produce and refine rare metals. In order to secure its domestic supply, it has long engaged in stockpiling these resources through various channels and means, the MSS said.

According to investigations by China’s national security authorities, a major contractor in a key sector of that country has been involved in illicit activities: on one hand, repackaging and relabeling rare metals to falsely indicate they are “not of Chinese origin” before re-exporting them to its home country; on the other hand, attempting to smuggle China’s export-controlled items such as rare earths by means of underreporting content levels, falsifying product names, sending multiple small shipments via express delivery, and switching transportation routes, the MSS said.

Upon obtaining solid evidence, China’s national security authorities, in coordination with relevant departments, took lawful action to block these illegal outflows of rare earth-related items, effectively safeguarding the country’s resource security and national security.

Rare-earth elements are hailed as “industrial gold” and “the mother of new materials.” China currently ranks among the world’s top in terms of rare-earth reserves, production, consumption, and exports, giving the country a significant advantage in global resources and industrial chains. Some countries closely monitor China’s rare-earth supply and go to great lengths to carry out theft and espionage activities, according to the MSS.

Investigations have revealed that foreign espionage and intelligence agencies, along with their agents, have attempted to instruct domestic criminals to smuggle rare earth materials out of the country by concealing their composition and exploiting China’s delivery and shipping channels.

Tactics include falsely declaring rare-earth elements as non-controlled items or forging technical specifications and component data, such as declaring high-purity rare earths (like dysprosium and terbium) as low-value products (such as ferroalloys or nickel powder), or mislabeling them as common goods such as “solder paste” or “refractory materials” to evade export controls.

It has also been discovered that these foreign agents and their proxies have attempted to hide undeclared rare-earth materials within other legally declared cargo or transport equipment. For example, they processed raw rare-earth materials into intermediate products, mixed rare-earth powders into ceramic tile materials, or concealed them inside plastic mannequins or bottled water.

These items were then smuggled out under vague labels such as “alloy parts” or “mechanical components” in an attempt to bypass export regulations.

The MSS vowed to work lawfully to prevent and combat infiltration, sabotage, and espionage activities by foreign intelligence agencies and their agents targeting China’s strategic mineral resources, firmly safeguarding national security.

Always a good sign when the Druze OSINT source in Syria posts the following:

“ 🇸🇨🙏 Okay guys, time to take up arms, good luck to everyone and thanks for your attention!

رحم الله جهاد الموحدين الجبليين.”

https://t.me/hawran_osint/861

For context, clashes between Bedouin tribes and the SMC escalated and now it seems like HTS are going to try and deal with the Druze in Suwayda permanently. Jolani has sent reinforcements while Israel has struck some Syrian tanks claiming to protect the Druze communities. Bad vibes all around

can my newsmega friends stop fighting :(

Let's talk some Russia-Ukraine for old time's sake. What's the ground situation looking like for the 2nd half of this year? I'll admit that I still kinda follow day to day updates, I check the Suriyak updates on telegram at least pretty much once a day. The main vector for now seems to be the Pokrovsk-Myrnograd urban agglomeration, with Russians achieving full drone coverage of all supply roads this week and being very close to cutting off Rodynske which is the lifeline for the Ukrainian garrison in the cities. I've read multiple comments about a possible Russian summer offensive to break the attritional nature of the war, but I have missed this. Do we have anything concrete indicating that or is that the usual telegram nonsense? I've been personally quite interested in the multiple cross-border attacks that Russians have done in recent months. These attacks might indicate that Putin is serious about the whole "buffer zone" thing. But it also opens up a pretty interesting direction if they continue pushing on near the Oskol River, as it could force a Ukrainian withdrawal from the Eastern bank finally. Anything interesting that you guys have seen or predict?

Brazilian Federal Police carry out search and seizure warrants against Jair Bolsonaro. He will have to comply with precautionary measures imposed by the Supreme Court, such as wear an electronic anklet, not using social media, stay at home from 7pm to 7am and not going near embassies due to the Supreme Court's fear that Bolsonaro would seek asylum in the USA.

A Federal Police convoy has just left Bolsonaro's house and is taking the President away. Bolsonaro is being taken to the nearest prison to be fitted with an electronic anklet. The defense lawyer says that Bolsonaro's cell phone and computer have been seized, and that the HQ of Bolsonaro's party, the Liberal Party, has also been investigated.

Reuters: Israeli ultra-Orthodox party leaves government over conscription bill

Two years ago, I here said that I thought this issue would basically be the first embers of some sort of civil conflict in Israel, possibly the start of something like a civil war. There's growing been growing tension for years between the Haredi and secular/non-Haredi because the Haredi get lots of benefits but don't have to serve. They get the benefits of the state without their kids having to die in the war, and that pisses a lot of people off. I made that take not knowing just how far the world would let Israel go, but I think a lot of the kindling is still there for the Israeli state to implode inshallah-script.

Netanyahu's government now only controls 61 out of 120 seats in the Knesset as a result of this development.

::: spoiler Article One of Israel's ultra-Orthodox parties, United Torah Judaism, said it was quitting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling coalition due to a long-running dispute over failure to draft a bill to exempt yeshiva students from military service.

Six of the remaining seven members of UTJ, which is comprised of the Degel Hatorah and Agudat Yisrael factions, wrote letters of resignation. Yitzhak Goldknopf, chairman of UTJ, had resigned a month ago.

That would leave Netanyahu with a razor thin majority of 61 seats in the 120 seat Knesset, or parliament.

It was not clear whether Shas, another ultra-Orthodox party, would follow suit.

Degel Hatorah said in a statement that after conferring with its head rabbis, "and following repeated violations by the government to its commitments to ensure the status of holy yeshiva students who diligently engage in their studies ... (its MKs) have announced their resignation from the coalition and the government."

Ultra-Orthodox parties have argued that a bill to exempt yeshiva students was a key promise in their agreement to join the coalition in late 2022.

A spokesperson for Goldknopf confirmed that in all, seven UTJ Knesset members are leaving the government.

Ultra-Orthodox lawmakers have long threatened to leave the coalition over the conscription bill.

Some religious parties in Netanyahu's coalition are seeking exemptions for ultra-Orthodox Jewish seminary students from military service that is mandatory in Israel, while other lawmakers want to scrap any such exemptions altogether.

The ultra-Orthodox have long been exempt from military service, which applies to most other young Israelis, but last year the Supreme Court ordered the defence ministry to end that practice and start conscripting seminary students.

Netanyahu had been pushing hard to resolve a deadlock in his coalition over a new military conscription bill, which has led to the present crisis.

The exemption, in place for decades and which over the years has spared an increasingly large number of people, has become a heated topic in Israel with the military still embroiled in a war in Gaza.

Brian Berletic on twitter: America is dispersing Pacific assets in preparation for war with China

https://xcancel.com/BrianJBerletic/status/1946385847206772765

tweet (pics not included)

🇺🇸🇨🇳 US is Not "Retreating" From Asia-Pacific, It's Dispersing Assets, Moving Others Back Before Conflict

  • The notion that the US is somehow "retreating" in the Asia-Pacific region is highly flawed - what appears to be a pull out is similar to the US moving assets out of the Middle East just ahead of US strikes on Iran;

  • The US knows much of its assets inside the first island chain will be destroyed by Chinese counterattacks, and has spent years developing a military posture utilizing longer ranges and greater dispersement;

  • This is meant to make US assets more survivable, not in any way a military posture of withdrawal;

  • Wishful thinking regarding US warmongering against China will end the same way it did regarding Russia in 2014-2022 and Iran earlier this year, in a conflict that somehow "surprised" many despite decades of policy papers and preparations made openly and continuously to provoke it;

https://archive.ph/QLFo4 weapon line go down stonks-down

France, Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary don’t plan to participate in NATO program to purchase weapons from USA for Ukraine

Denmark and Germany have so far agreed to participate in the new format of arms supplies to Kyiv, proposed by US President Donald Trump, while France, Italy, the Czech Republic and Hungary have refused, Western media reported on Wednesday. In addition, Bloomberg noted on Wednesday that Europe increasingly feels the need to end its dependence on American weapons.

"Europe relies heavily on the US defense industry. However, due to trade tariffs, President Trump's attitude toward NATO and his lack of commitment to defending the alliance's countries, European countries will increasingly prioritize investments in their own defense complexes," the agency's sources said.

According to the European portal Politico, France has refused to participate in the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine. The publication's sources reported that the country's government intends to focus instead on increasing its own defense budget, which last weekend the president of the republic, Emmanuel Macron, promised to increase by 2027 almost twice as much as the 2017 budget. In addition, Paris wants to support European manufacturers who previously supplied Ukraine with anti-missile systems and other weapons.

Italy also does not intend to purchase weapons from the USA for delivery to Ukraine, but will continue to provide military assistance to Kyiv. Unnamed representatives of the Ministry of Defense told the ezine La Stampa - the department has never discussed purchasing American weapons for Kyiv. The ezine also notes that Italy does not have the means to carry out such operations. According to the publications’ sources, this problem is so acute that the only purchase from the USA that Italy has planned for the next ten years is a batch of F-35 fighters for its own needs.

The Czech government, in turn, stated that military aid to Kyiv would continue, but through participation in other initiatives and purchases from Czech, not American, manufacturers.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Budapest does not intend to participate in the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine.

Official consent to purchase weapons from the USA has so far been given by Berlin and Copenhagen. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Rasmussen has declared his full readiness to join in the financing. The Dutch Foreign Ministry, in turn, said that it was considering the possibility of participating in the program. However, despite the government's positive assessment of the initiative, Amsterdam has not yet confirmed its commitment to direct participation in it. According to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, it is expected that Sweden and Norway, as well as the United Kingdom, may join in the funding.

On July 11, Trump announced that USA’s NATO allies would buy weapons from Washington that could later be transferred to Ukraine. Rutte, during a press conference with Trump on Monday, called it "logical" that European countries would pay for the supply of American weapons to Ukraine. The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, said on Tuesday that EU countries would prefer Washington to provide some military aid to Ukraine free of charge. "If we pay for these weapons, it means that it is we, and not the United States, who provide this military aid," Kallas said at a press conference in Brussels. She stressed that Brussels "would like to see a distribution of these costs."

Alright so one thing I'll feel compelled to bring up is that since I've been doing stuff in the real world for a few months is that since I've been gone I noticed that the news mega has gone really down in quality where it seems that as long as you hit a certain amount of words your analysis is deemed 'materialist' or 'marxist' or whatever feelgood word that complete doomer nonsense is not challenged like someone writing a ton of words to explain why Russia will capitulated in 2026 because Trump said they'll send some new wunderwaffen to Ukraine something that would be mocked as liberal nonsense like a year ago is just quietly accepted.

Like it feels that there's just the constant doomer faction that has completely taken over and now it's this competition to be the most doomer with the most words and churning out the shittiest takes similar to AI slop.

And the reason I'm being kind of aggressive in my calling out here is that while yes some things suck now some people just read more like some western third world maoists that have had their brains cooked and are now unable to do anything because the empire is doing 120d chess moves that mean that whatever we do we've already lost and the western population will never do anything and yadda yadda.

I get why their brain has been pickled by being in this brine of doom juice but it really feels like some people just gotta expel those 'bad humors' by doing some good old honest praxis, to feel fucking solidarity and camaraderie in this world instead of whatever this feels like.

Much like in The Spectator yesterday there was also a piece attacking Zelensky in the FT 2 days ago

Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused of authoritarian slide after anti-corruption raids

Check this out

“Taking advantage of the war, Zelenskyy is making his first, yet confident, steps towards corrupt authoritarianism,” wrote the editorial board of Ukrainian Truth, Ukraine’s most-read online news outlet.

“A crackdown on the country’s most famous anti-corruption crusader can’t be happening without at least the silent approval from President Zelenskyy, if not active permission,” the English-language Kyiv Independent said.

The president’s top political rivals followed suit. Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko warned that “under the guise of war, the authorities persecute those deemed inconvenient: political opponents, local governments, experts, journalists and activists”.

To my knowledge this didn't start recently but it's nice that the Ukraine overton window moved to where I can send libs shit like this about Z-man

Warning of catastrophic situation in Gaza due to Israeli aggression - Prensa Latina

Article

Ramallah, Jul 20 (Prensa Latina) The situation in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic and unprecedented in modern history as a result of the daily attacks and the blockade imposed by Israel, a Palestinian official source denounced today.

The director general of the Government Media Office in Gaza, Ismail Thawabta, stressed that more than two million people there are living under bombardment, hunger and deprivation of the most basic necessities of life.

He also warned of the total destruction of infrastructure, the collapse of the health sector and the severe shortage of food, water and medicine.

He also warned of the worsening famine in the territory and the failure of international efforts to bring some relief, while, he said, hundreds of aid trucks remain stranded on the other side of the border.

In the face of this situation, Al-Thawabat called for the establishment of safe and permanent humanitarian corridors under international supervision, the elimination of the politicization of aid and an end to its manipulation.

He also demanded an urgent investigation into the famine caused by Israel and the accountability of those responsible.

The official considered it necessary to lift the blockade on the Strip, and also to stop the military aggression and the policies of displacement, hunger and destruction.

In this regard, he called on the European Union to break “the cycle of political and moral complicity and take immediate and practical steps to free itself from any complicity in the genocide” against the Palestinian people.

Trump's announcement to send Patriots to Ukraine seems to cause confusion:

Trump's mysterious arms "deal" (Süddeutsche Zeitung, in German)

When Trump finally announced that Patriot systems were already on their way to Ukraine, this was immediately denied. According to German government circles: “Nothing is in the bag yet.”

But it is still completely unclear when and from whom Ukraine can receive additional Patriot batteries, unless the USA itself is prepared to hand over its own systems.

It's not even clear how useful these Patriots are. They're not cost effective when shooting down Geran drones, and they can't reliably shoot down Russia's most advanced missiles. I guess they can shoot down something in between, but surely that's not going to make a difference.

Every US congressperson besides Rashida Tlaib, everyone in the previous and current administrations, every defense contractor who turns a blind eye to the carnage they aid, every NATO countries’ heads of state, every person who has even a degree-removed connection to the Infant Death Force and the pathetic farce that is the Gaza Holocaust Facilitators, the diaspora collaborator organizations that operate as pipelines to Birthright and warp the horror of the Holocaust in order to carry out their own, the lobbyists and donors that incentivize the horror, the collaborator regimes who gum up the rage and sorrow and facilitate the status quo, the propagandists who recite the creed of Goebbels, the rabid settler dogs, the hooligan hitlerites on the ground, the entire command of the IDF and the entire Israeli government. Etcetera.

If there is any justice in this world, we need a second Nuremberg bare minimum. Fighting has progressed into the city center of suwayda. HTS fighters, not content with killing and capturing Druze rebels, have begun humiliating them by shaving their beards and mustaches, as well as other acts of sectarian/cultural violence. CW for blood and corpses of people who are definitely not wearing military fatigues

More forces are being massed in Aleppo

https://t.me/nayaforiraq/35020

Context

spoilerThe reality on the ground is now much clearer: Julani initially unleashed Bedouin militants against the Druze community. The Druze, however, resisted fiercely and pushed them back. In retaliation, the Bedouins, joined by HTS forces, launched a coordinated attack. But the Druze fighters ambushed them, inflicting significant casualties and proving their resilience. Throughout this escalation, Julani remained silent. The CIA openly declared its support for him, and Israel, too, said nothing. In fact, when it became apparent that HTS and allied factions were advancing within 28–30 km of the occupied Golan border, Israel finally intervened not to protect the Druze, but to bomb convoys that had crossed Israeli-defined red lines. Let it be clear: Israel did not target HTS to shield the Druze, but to protect its own border interests.

So far, over 100 Druze civilians and fighters have been killed. Many others have been kidnapped, and there is growing fear that they could be executed. On the other side, more than 200 HTS terrorists have been eliminated in the clashes. The Sawfar–Aley road has now been shut down, and the Lebanese Army has deployed to contain the situation. But the conflict is far from over, it is expanding.

Israeli airstrikes have already hit over 30 targets, with the latest ones focused on the Daraa countryside near Ezra city. Israel is using the pretext of border security to bomb Syrian air defenses and military installations, not to defend any civilian population. Meanwhile, HTS and their cyber Takfiri cheerleaders remain too blind or complicit to understand how they’re being used as pawns in a much larger game. Fighting is now spilling into civilian zones, including around Suwayda National Hospital, where doctors and staff have issued urgent pleas for the hospital to be neutralized and kept out of the conflict. This is not a local tribal clash. It is a multi-layered war involving HTS aggression, external intelligence coordination, and strategic bombing campaigns with the Druze community caught in the crossfire and left to defend themselves alone.

Analysis from relatively resistance alligned Lebanese political commentator Khalil Nasrallah

spoiler“Events in Sweida took a different turn. The al-Jolani group repeated the same mistake of the coast, with the difference that the people of Sweida had prepared for a day when their homes would be violated. What happened was that, for the people of Sweida, the calculations of who was supported by Israel and who was not, and who aligned with Sharia law and who was not, were no longer subject to considerations. The issue became a matter of honor and dignity. Accordingly, they rose up in a manner that has begun to produce some repercussions. "Shaving off mustaches" and killing people, executions and burnings, "you pigs" and "you infidels," and kidnappings, targeting those with and without ties to the Hijra, led to the perception that the threat now lies with the Druze community. The one who committed the sin is the one who brought sectarian slogans to Sweida.“

Now Israeli Druze have crossed the border into Syria to protest, the IOF have moved further into Daraa, and there are rumors of Lebanese Druze forming a group to go fight in Syria (time is a flat circle)

The Lebanese army is taking measures to control the border and stop people going to fight

“The road closure and military deployment come amid heightened tensions in the region, which has a significant Druze population and borders Syria. The Lebanese Army is reportedly taking precautionary measures due to fears of potential spillover from the ongoing conflict in Suwayda, Syria.”
