that's another cool thing right? even specific instances of Fediverse act as containment. but I'm new here what's Lemmy.today's damage?
Lemmy.today has an open federation policy and tends to have most conservative users who want to stay connected to the wider threadverse.
I joined because of the open federation, but mostly because I wanted to have full control over which instances I block. I'm definitely not conservative though.
Interesting. Have you seen more conservatism overall? Or I guess my question is, "how is it?"
I haven't, but I also intentionally stay way from seeking it out and don't browse all, at least not locally. The instance also went down for a few days a couple of weeks ago due to an expired cert, which nearly made me leave for a different instance. Other than that, it's been fine so far.

Not sure what you mean by “open federation.” By default an instance federates with all others unless you start blocking, right? So every instance has an open federation policy until something like .world gets fed up with hexbear and blocks them.
Also, if they are all that conservative I’d guess it would be difficult to maintain this open federation policy, given most other instances might start blocking them.
They do not defederate as much as the other instances and seem to have a lax moderation stance.
That does usually tend to lead to a certain kind of environment yeah. Nazi Bar parable and all that.

Is there a thread somewhere where people explain all the various stereotypes associated with various instances?
I asked about .zip once. Someone said it was “pro AI.”
I was thinking the exact same thing the other day. I still meet users of opposite opinions here—which was never a problem, but exchanges are mostly at a polite, educated, and respectful level. Nothing like the childish POS that lurk in Reddit in every sub.
If some people find it too hard or stupid to be on Lemmy, then that's people I doubt will enrich my online experience in any way.
With all my sympathy to Lemmy, I think it's rather the other way around. Lemmy users are using Reddit to promote Lemmy, and are hating on corporate social media.

Not today, but, sometimes...
I got permanently banned from Reddit after 15 years and now am here. It’s better overall mainly because less bots
And less right wing, which means less stupid overall. At least I haven't had to constantly explain how the world works to people I disagreed with. Smart bunch.
Ads are better than donating
I don't agree, ads are in your face and track you through the entire internet unless you freeload with AdBlock. Donating a small sum a month keeps the servers running and your client adfree, ain't that great?
IDGAF their comments are better then 99% of Reddit's liberal shit hole.
