I kind of like the current barriers to entry here. the filter is keeping out the exact kind of people I left reddit to avoid.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 months ago (2 children)

We can send those archtypes to Lemmy.today >:)

[–] sad_detective_man@leminal.space 12 points 3 months ago (1 children)

that's another cool thing right? even specific instances of Fediverse act as containment. but I'm new here what's Lemmy.today's damage?

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 17 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Lemmy.today has an open federation policy and tends to have most conservative users who want to stay connected to the wider threadverse.

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I joined because of the open federation, but mostly because I wanted to have full control over which instances I block. I'm definitely not conservative though.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Interesting. Have you seen more conservatism overall? Or I guess my question is, "how is it?"

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 4 points 3 months ago

I haven't, but I also intentionally stay way from seeking it out and don't browse all, at least not locally. The instance also went down for a few days a couple of weeks ago due to an expired cert, which nearly made me leave for a different instance. Other than that, it's been fine so far.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

There is an actual conservative community there, and just recently a second one was added: https://lemmy.today/post/32360706.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 3 points 3 months ago

I was not familiar with that. Didn't know this instance was even well known. Good to know what the instance is apparently known for

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Not sure what you mean by “open federation.” By default an instance federates with all others unless you start blocking, right? So every instance has an open federation policy until something like .world gets fed up with hexbear and blocks them.

Also, if they are all that conservative I’d guess it would be difficult to maintain this open federation policy, given most other instances might start blocking them.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

They do not defederate as much as the other instances and seem to have a lax moderation stance.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 3 points 3 months ago

That does usually tend to lead to a certain kind of environment yeah. Nazi Bar parable and all that.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 months ago

What’s the stereotype for Lemmy.today?

Is there a thread somewhere where people explain all the various stereotypes associated with various instances?

I asked about .zip once. Someone said it was “pro AI.”

I was thinking the exact same thing the other day. I still meet users of opposite opinions here—which was never a problem, but exchanges are mostly at a polite, educated, and respectful level. Nothing like the childish POS that lurk in Reddit in every sub.

If some people find it too hard or stupid to be on Lemmy, then that's people I doubt will enrich my online experience in any way.

[–] LambdaRX@sh.itjust.works 22 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

With all my sympathy to Lemmy, I think it's rather the other way around. Lemmy users are using Reddit to promote Lemmy, and are hating on corporate social media.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 17 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Uh oh, we don't allow facts here, only self-congratulating pats on the back... It's okay, you didn't know, but now you do, so no more of that, capiche?

(hugely /s btw, bc some people are probably that far gone for it to be real?:-P)

(but just to mess with people's heads: is it tho? is it REALLY?!?:-P)

[–] barkingspiders@infosec.pub 22 points 3 months ago (3 children)

I uh, don't know the beaver and book things, what are they?

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Those two are the instances sopuli and reddthat respectfully.

I'm having 'Nam flashbacks with having to remember all these flags and capitals. 😵

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 18 points 3 months ago (2 children)

In the US nowadays that means people who aren't aggressive, childish, xenophobic, homophobic, bigot, racist, egotistical, selfish, nazi, trumpist, or MAGA.

Edit: I forgot misogynistic

I am. I mostly just tell people I like their art/post or whatever and that I hope they have a nice day.

Which, I hope you have a nice day :)

Not today, but, sometimes...

[–] Mingusdynasty@lemmy.myserv.one 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I got permanently banned from Reddit after 15 years and now am here. It’s better overall mainly because less bots

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

And less right wing, which means less stupid overall. At least I haven't had to constantly explain how the world works to people I disagreed with. Smart bunch.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 13 points 3 months ago

Ads are better than donating

I don't agree, ads are in your face and track you through the entire internet unless you freeload with AdBlock. Donating a small sum a month keeps the servers running and your client adfree, ain't that great?

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 months ago

IDGAF their comments are better then 99% of Reddit's liberal shit hole.
