On this day in 1912, a riot broke out in Grabow, Louisiana when gunfire was exchanged between organizing lumber workers and private gunmen hired by the Galloway Lumber Company, just one event in the Louisiana-Texas Lumber War. The clash left three union workers and one company gunman dead, wounding an estimated fifty more.

The event took place in the context of workers in the sawmill town of Grabow joining the Brotherhood of Timber Workers (shown), a branch of the Lumber Workers Industrial Union (LWIU), itself affiliated with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

On July 7th, 1912, the union workers held a series of rallies at several different company towns, including Bon Ami and Carson, alongside Grabow.

The group that went to Grabow, around 200 people, spontaneously decided to hold a rally with several speeches - labor leader Arthur L. Emerson spoke on top of a wagon to roughly 25 non-union men, plus the additional union men who had come with him.

Shots began between these workers and a group of four others, including Galloway Lumber owner John Galloway, in the local mill office, all of whom had later been found to be drinking before the incident. It is not known for certain which group fired first. Three union men were killed alongside one member of the private company security force. Approximately 50 more were wounded.

Over the next few days, more than more than 60 workers were taken into custody by police. Although the mill owner himself was arrested, he was released without charges soon afterward. Sixty-five of the timber workers' group were brought up on charges ranging from inciting a riot to murder.

The IWW worked to aid the incarcerated workers, with "Big Bill" Haywood fundraising for their legal fund. The trial lasted until November 8th, and its jury returned a not guilty verdict for all of the union men. All of those arrested were set free.

Although they had limited success in Louisiana, the LWIU successfully organized later, winning an eight-hour day and vastly improved working conditions in the Pacific Northwest after a 1917 strike. Today, there is a historical marker at the site of the riot, located on what is now the property of DeRidder Airport, Louisiana.

dude I'd be so mad if I paid to eat at the restaurant I was just cookin' at and I knew "how it was made" like lol

I'm in there re-heating risotto, just adding cream and cheese to it basically. I'm in there giving motherfuckers TWO stalks of asparagus to go with their duck breast. You want some scallops? Okay, you get five tagliatelle, FOUR scallops, all mixed into a peppery, asparagus laden sauce. with five florets of broccoli. enjoy your fuckin' dinner

like damn lol if I paid 55 dollars or w/e for "duck breast and asparagus" I would be absolutely livid at getting TWO stalks of it, like, no, come back with my fucking vegetables, asshole.

I bought a whole fucking bunch to make when I got home and wow, I used half of it and made three huge servings! but yeah, let's nickel and dime people on vegetables and call it fine dining jagoff

Correctly identified a bug in our basil shipment at work before looking it up to be sure. It was a striped cucumber beetle.

I wonder if it's deliberate, as a way of slyly saying to the viewer "I'm one of you, you can trust me!"

I finished up The Case of the Golden Idol and really enjoyed it, but was a bit nonplussed by the hamfisted anti-communism at the end. Look up the developer and whaddaya know: they're Latvian classic

Anyway, minor anti-communist silliness aside, I highly recommend it! It's on sale for the next hour and half on Steam (i.e. until 10 AM PDT), and there's also a demo available. I actually played the demo a while back and wasn't completely sold on it, but the levels get much more engaging and complex as the game progresses so I'm glad I pulled the trigger and bought the full game. At any rate, there's no need to rush to buy it since it goes on sale quite often (see: SteamDB, GOGDB) so you can just wait a month or two until the next discount. If you're not hellbent on buying from Steam, I'd recommend waiting for the next GOG sale since there's no DRM and the bundle with the DLC is a bit cheaper compared to Steam.

About to start my vacay and uh... I actually set something up with some old friends? We had a running joke for a while where every new year we'd be like "hey we should hang out" and then someone else would say maybe next year. And it just kept on going like that until one dropped out. After that the remaining two of us kind of kept it going until we had agreed to meet up a couple years ago. That fell through and the dream was pretty much dead.

Since I was going to take my vacay I decided to try and set it up again and, well, to my surprise I was able to get everyone to agree to something next week. I've never really been the friend that invites people out and this past year or so I've been trying as much as I can just because I've grown distant from the friends I used to have that would drag me everywhere. So to finally have some success. Well, fingers crossed that we actually end up meeting up. Need to fill out a few more days, but things are off to a nice start.

Okay listen. I know it's never once worked before but if we force the liberation movement to adhere to the sensibilities of their oppressors it'll work this time. - Every lib every time

The universe didn't have to be such that we get sunrises every morning and sunsets every night. There's this fantastic daily display of gobsmacking peace and beauty and every single person on earth can afford to witness it regularly.

Didn't have to be this way, but it is.

Is my hatred of AI voice videos irrational and unwarranted?

Hearing the same one or two voices is fucking grating to my ears. The flow and tone always seems off and I fucking hate it. Yet a number of people I know constantly watch AI voiced videos.
