The episode was pretty funny. "Pickle Rick" is a mild example of "L0l Randumz Xd" humor, because the reaction of literally every other character is that it's underwhelming and unfunny. the rest of the episode has good jokes, references, super fluid action and gore.

Edit: I don't want this on the front page while US-Iran stuff is going down.

Iirc it was that people missed the fact that it was unfunny and were quoting it unironically, which led to people quoting it ironically

Yeah people would just say and write in internet comments "I'm pickle riiiiick" just to be sO rAnD0m LoL And there were pickle rick shirts and shit. And so many "memes" that were just that picture of pickle rick. It was a combo of the fan base being really annoying about it and also it being a dumb joke (if you could even call it a joke). The fan base was extra cringe around that time

Funniest shit I ever saw

Back in the old days we would’ve called this a forced meme.

glasses-off > a mild example of "L0l Randumz Xd" humor

glasses-on > funniest shit I ever saw

Why did this become the quote for people to loathe?

I don't think I could explain it. You need a very high IQ to understand why

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 27 points 1 week ago

It was more a response to the R&M fandom at the time than the show itself, IIRC. The fandom and hatedoms both grew together in a symbiotic way until the szechuan sauce thing happened, so every meme among the fans was mirrored by the anti-fans and this was one of them.

I think it was the Schezwan sauce comeback where someone made a scene at a McDonalds exclaiming the quote "I'm Pickle Rick".

The show, aside from Roiland, is OK. I don't understand the big deal before or since then around the show.

"Actually you need a high iq to understand r.... "

The thing that always got me that unlike the shows where people idolize the terrible lead Rick is never shown as winning. Walter white, Erick Cartman, Tony Soprano, who ever else. They tend to be shown as winning. Even in this episode. The entire A plot is that he is miserable and only makes his life and the life of everyone around him worse. In the way of americna media literacy the ur-example they chose is the exactly wrong one.

That's not the point of a male power fantasy, though. The point of it is to be able to be aggressive, crude, violent, without any kind of pushback or resistance because you are the most specialest boy there is. They want to be these characters not because they're successful, but because they don't face any consequences for being horrible people.

Yeah, the message these sorts of people take away isn't "this attitude and behaviour is wrong" but "the universe is wrong for going against me."

Exactly the clip I was expecting. Pretty sure I would have impulsively kicked the guy in the stomach when he dropped to the floor. Just a basic, instinctual reflex.

It's a fine to whatever joke but it became an emblem for everything people found annoying and exhausting

He turned himself into a pickle. Funniest shit I've ever seen.

Binged the show for the first time a few weeks ago. It's a much better, funnier, and more thoughtful show than its online fanbase led me to expect. It's not a GOOD show, exactly, but it's decent for what it is.

But I feel the show wearing thin in spots. Rick can't change, can't show weakness, can't ever face real consequences because then the show itself would change. He's smarter than everyone, including Q-esque godlike beings. But Morty has come to the realization that Rick is an irredeemable asshole multiple times now. And while Morty has changed, he can't reject Rick fully because then the show would change. They've got to do something to keep this act from getting stale but they also can't do anything.

Similar to House M.D. in some ways, but I'm struck by how that show's various answers to it's unchanging asshole protagonist (his whole staff leaves, he loses both of the best relationships he's ever had, the only person he really cares about hates him for much of the last run of the show, he gets shot, and at least once he does change and isn't such an asshole anymore (but it can't stick)) wouldn't work for Rick & Morty.

Gonna open myself up here and say that Rick and Morty is a very good show, toxic fandom and overly indulgent latter seasons notwithstanding

[–] D61@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

I made the mistake of paying attention to the fandom of this show after I started watching it... the Szechuan sauce thing really made me reevaluate my enjoyment of the show.

Still watch it, still like it, but the enjoyment is much more muted now.

Solar Opposites is better than R&M
