What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

Iran 2024

Authorities further suppressed the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly. Women and girls, LGBTI people, and ethnic and religious minorities experienced systemic discrimination and violence. Authorities intensified their crackdown on women who defied compulsory veiling laws, the Baha’i community, and Afghan refugees and migrants. Thousands were arbitrarily detained, interrogated, harassed and/or unjustly prosecuted for exercising their human rights. Trials remained systematically unfair. Enforced disappearances and torture and other ill-treatment were widespread and systematic. Cruel and inhuman punishments, including flogging and amputation, were implemented. The death penalty was used arbitrarily, disproportionately affecting ethnic minorities and migrants. Systemic impunity prevailed for past and ongoing crimes against humanity relating to prison massacres in 1988 and other crimes under international law.

As a regural reader of MoG, one would think it would be difficult to surprise me with lies/degeneracy from tankie scum.

Yet here we are. I had no clue that shilling for Iran (an authoritarian theocracy) was part of the tankie MO.

Tankies operate on a very simple basis:

US bad, so if anything hates US then it must be good

get back to work dessalines

Dessalines is one the most pathetic disinformation machines in the history of social media. Total bitch ass cuck. I too wear the badge of being personally banned by it.

But yeah, don't use .ml or anything else associated with tankies. That should be a part of every instances sign up PSA. Tankies are the worst thing to happen to "the left" in the history of politics and I'm unconvinced 99% of their presence is not an oligarch PsyOp. It's not a coincidence they serve as a mouthpiece for Putin and Russias allies over all else. It's like arguing with the mental illness of MAGA. There is no morality or ethics because their logic is corrupted to its core.

"We can achieve freedom for the working class by the absolute enslavement and oppression of the working class" — tankism

What a fucking disgusting tankie existence must be to end up as such a butch ass cuck as you put it.

Anything at all worthwhile on .ml or should we push to defederate more instances from them?

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

After having crossposted everything of worth from there for months now, I can say traffic has gone down considerably.

Whatever that's left, can be easily substituted by other up and coming comms like !linux@programming.dev or !privacy@lemmy.dbzer0.com

So, yes, we should be doing more calls for defederation IMO

Iran is a great example to bring up when tankies insist that starting a revolution is always a great idea and always makes things better.

Iran used to be a democracy, but the party that won their last election ran on the promise that they'd nationalise their oil industry. This upset the British oil company that owned all the oil infrastructure in Iran, so the British and American governments led a coup to install a dictator friendly to their interests. The Shah was a very unpleasant leader whose main priorities were repressing his opponents and trying to make the country look rich and western, e.g. by banning religious dress and spending loads of money on buying Concorde aircraft.

Eventually, a coalition of groups, mainly various flavours of leftist and religious entities, started a revolution that overthrew the Shah. Unfortunately, once the Shah had been deposed, the largest religious faction had all the leftists immediately assassinated before a new government could be formed, and then exploited the power vacuum to install an authoritarian theocracy. For a lot of people, this made things even worse. The consequences for disagreeing with the government were still torture and/or death, but the things you were forbidden from doing were different, e.g. religious dress switched from being banned to being mandatory.

Unsurprisingly, Cowbee disagrees (based on an argument we had where he carefully destroyed any respect I might have had for his opinion) - there were leftists participating in the Iranian Revolution, so it must be a Marxist/Leninist utopia where everyone's happy with everything all the time.

Yes, unfortunately, some of the largest communities are still there because .ml is the home instance of the Lemmy developers. That's a real problem.

Recently, one of the mods there deleted two comments I made out of the blue – I had simply said that, in my opinion, there can be no justification for terrorism against civilians (I don't see what's wrong with that). I already knew this, but it made it clear to me how absurdly intolerant these people are – at .ml, open discourse is actively prevented and that is unacceptable to me.

As a result, I have stopped my financial support for Lemmy development – despite FOSS, I simply cannot support people whose stated goal is apparently to replace one propaganda machine with another. That is the opposite of what is important to me.

My financial contribution will now go to other projects. I'm very sorry as support for the software development is of course important, but I simply can't trust people who approve of such a restrictive approach to social media.

Same. I donated when that post was pinned, and regreted my decision like 2 days later lol

With slrpnk potentially migrating to PieFed, and other instances like blahaj opening up a PieFed version, we might get to see another user migration.

By subscriber count, but comm subscriber count is, essentially, worthless. .ml memes has something like 51K subscribers, Lemmy has something like 54K TOTAL monthly active users. There's no way nearly every single MAU is subbed to .ml memes LMAO

And indeed if you look at meme comms on https://lemmyverse.net/communities?order=active_month .ml memes, last I checked was somewhere around #40 (I'm not sure why it's not appearing at all today, maybe it's traffic tankies so hard it fell off the chart completely lmao)

The only remaining big ones, by MAUs, are Linux and Privacy, both of which are going to be toppled by !linux@programming.dev and !privacy@lemmy.dbzer0.com sooner or later.

The time for calling for defederation is now, whatever is left isn't worth the damage they are doing

[–] DandomRude@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Sad but true. I see it the same way: .ml seems to me to cause a lot of harm. The arbitrary censorship there - imo there's no other way to describe it - is damaging the reputation of the Fediverse as an open approach to social media, which is why I think it's indeed time for decent instances to defederate.

I mean, especially for new users who are unfamiliar with the decentralized nature of the Fediverse, it's an unpleasant experience when they post something completely legitimate in one of the (seemingly) large .ml comms and then get censored by one of their deluded mods.

This can easily give the completely wrong impression that Lemmy would be something like Truth Social just on the other side of the political spectrum, which .ml actually is – and in my opinion, this needs to be prevented at all costs.

I gained a better understanding of online trolls like those who run the lemmy troll triad when I read this article.
