Kaity has just spun up a PieFed instance, which is open to anyone that wants to try it out.

PieFed is part of the "Threadiverse" along with lemmy and mbin. If you are already reading this in lemmy, then you already know what PieFed is about.

If you're curious to try it out, or if you're just looking for a way to avoid lemmy, you can find it at https://piefed.blahaj.zone/

Like our lemmy instance, we have set PieFed applications to require manual approval, but if you're already a member of our lemmy instance, you can get auto approved by our modbot by quoting your registration code somewhere in your application.

I’m not sure if this is a Piefed software issue or a Piefed Blahaj federation issue; has anyone had trouble getting communities from slrpnk.net to show up on the page to add a remote community? I’ve been trying to add !birding@slrpnk.net, which as far as I can tell is still up and functioning, but PF Blahaj just gives an error that says “Community not found.”

EDIT: facepalm, I was checking to see if it was up on my Blahaj lemmy account. slrpnk.net itself is down. Dunno how I missed that happening, but in my defense there’s been a little bit going on in LA right now 😅

I'd love to know the performance different between the two. It feels like Lemmy should be more lean.

I think I'm not really a fan of any of the existing mobile app options for PieFed. I'll definitely keep an eye on that and see if any ones that I like more become available.

[–] pewgar_seemsimandroid@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

hmm i already have a piefed account, do i make one for blahaj too..

[–] supakaity@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

You don't have to, your existing account will work perfectly fine.

But on the other hand, we're not rationing them out based on how many you already have either!

Go to https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/link for a code you can use to get instant registration approval.

Has anyone written about the functional differences between lemmy and piefed?

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 week ago (6 children)

Apparently it’s mainly more feature-rich/up to date/stable? That’s usually what I read at least

Ada and Kaity sitting in a tree! W. I. N. N. I. N. G!

And also kissing presumably

[–] supakaity@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 6 days ago

Lotsa kissys!

[–] ImADifferentBird@lemmy.blahaj.zone 26 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Neat! I'll have to play with it when I get the chance.

How does PieFed differ from Lemmy? At first glance, they seem like similar applications. Does it have any particular strengths or additional features I might want to try out?

[–] ada@piefed.blahaj.zone 47 points 1 week ago (3 children)

There are lots of little usability improvements, and configuration options, but they are functionally very similar.

But it also has the advantage of not being written by the lemmy devs, which is a deal breaker for some folk

The web site has a list of differences between Lemmy and PieFed:

  • Comments with -10 score are collapsed by default.
  • Communities are organized into topics. See https://piefed.social/topics.
  • Image-heavy communities can have a tiled/masonry view, like https://piefed.social/c/pics@lemmy.world
  • People who get downvoted a lot end up with a ‘low reputation’ indicator next to their name. You’ll know it when you see it.
  • Hide all posts based on keyword filters.
  • Keyboard shortcuts.
  • Upvotes in meme communities do not add to reputation.
  • Better UI design (somewhat subjective!)
  • Improved hotness ranking algorithm (subjective)
  • Voting is private.
  • See also features for healthy communities.
  • Each community has it’s own wiki. Demo

This list isn't exhaustive; one major feature that's not listed there is de-duplication, where reposts all get combined into a single post with a split comment section (one for each individual post).

Probably not, because we have downvotes disabled :)

Thank you, I was worried :3

Cool, a women indicator

(The joke is Lemmy is sexist mods please don't ban me)

You're correct though.

Anybody who isn't the 'default' cishet able neurotypical white man is marginalised in society and even online, we're also attacked a lot.

Interesting, never heard of piefed before, been using lemmy for a long time.

[–] laurelraven@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 days ago

Same (well, other than a long time, but I think it's been over a year at least)

[–] Interstellar_1@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I wish there were more apps with piefed support. I like my gestures. Nonetheless, thanks alot fort the instance! Piefed seems great, I'll be happy to try it out here.

[–] jwr1@kbin.earth 2 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I'll just mention, in case it's not apparent, Interstellar (the app) does support swipe gestures on posts and comments; you just need to enable them in the settings. I do realize the Blahaj PieFed instance hasn't even enabled the API, so the app wouldn't work with piefed.blahaj.zone yet.

BTW, I like your username :)

Oh, nice, good to know! Also thanks :)

[–] jwr1@kbin.earth 2 points 6 days ago

Oh, never mind, I just saw their comment about the API being enabled, so the app should work with piefed.blahaj.zone.

Okay I'm super impressed so far! I absolutely love this. Way better than lemmy imo, I'll be migrating there fully. The wiki feature for the HRT community is gonna be super handy and things like post flairs/tags is something many have missed here!

Things like a [transmasc] and [transfem] and [transneutral] tag for trans_memes f.ex!

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 week ago

is there pie? 🍰💖

[–] JPAKx4@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Basically a message for Kaity, but I am getting a

ClientException: Request failed with status 400: Bad Request: {"error":"alpha api is not enabled"} , uri=https://piefed.blahaj.zone/api/alpha/user/login

when using the Interstellar App and wanted to bring it to your attention. Thanks <3

[–] supakaity@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'll check it out. See what this alpha API thing is all about.

[–] supakaity@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

API now enabled!

Post about it in Blåhaj PieFed Meta:

What exactly is the “threadiverse?”

[–] PirateFrog@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 week ago

Any activitypub enabled software that mimics the Reddit style of longform thread/forum style social media with distinct topics.

Which at the moment is Lemmy, Piefed, and Mbin.

Lemmy Piefed and Kbin I think.

So content aggregators on the fedi?

[–] kittenzrulz123@piefed.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I just tried it, I like this place :3

What I like: The UI is nice and there are many options that lemmy doesn't have
What I dont: The lack of any formatting options for comments

[–] ada@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 6 days ago

That looks to be a bug or something, because the formatting options are there when you edit your comment. I'll raise that with the dev.

[–] Cricket@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Do you have any thoughts on how the two compare in terms of resource utilization (CPU / RAM) given a similar number of users and activity?

I've been curious about this, because Rust, the programming language used for Lemmy, is supposed to be a LOT more CPU/RAM efficient than Python, the language used for Piefed. Python, on the other hand, is supposed to be much faster to initially develop in, which would at least partly explain how Piefed gained so many features so quickly compared to Lemmy.

[–] ada@piefed.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 week ago (3 children)

We don't have a point of comparison so far, because the instances don't share the same concurrent user numbers, but it would be hard to beat lemmy, which is really light for the volume it handles.
