"They're putting litterboxes in the classrooms for the furry kids. My cousin's rooommates's mom works at XYZ school and she said they're really doing that." I've heard it from 3 different people.

At no point during this Rogan Experience fever dream wherein a child in a fursuit poops in a sand box in class did any of these people stop to think that maybe they are just gullible.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 2 points 16 hours ago

I definitely believe there could be bags of litter in schools. It's great at absorbing vomit and urine for accidents, plus with all the active shooter policies they have now it would help when kids have to shelter in place for hours.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 1 points 18 hours ago

I had a 10-15 min conversation with someone at work that thought this. He was mad about it too. After I explained a few points, like if there was a litterbox in school that people are shitting in then there would be pics. Smart phones are everywhere and you don't think a kid would have uploaded a pic before the end of the class period. He finally saw the logic, but said maybe someone brought it in as a joke. Like kids joking a furry in class or something. That assumption is a big difference than claiming schools let kids shit on litterboxes because they identify as cats.

Either way, I want proof before I believe in such a ridiculous claim.

That trickle down economics actually works.

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 6 points 1 day ago

It does work.

If you're the one doing the trickling.

(No points if you guess what gets trickled...)

That gay men have to wear diapers because they become "loose" and incontinent.

The kids today don't realize how homophobic the 90s and 00s were.

Gangs drive around with their headlights off and then kill the people that flash headlights at them as an initiation.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 4 points 18 hours ago

Hah. I had someone at my old job sent a warning email about that. Or they claimed a gang member would be broken down on the side of the road and then shoot you when you stopped to help. Same email. I think people are paranoid.

I have a weird one that haunted expat circles in China in the '00s and deep into the '10s. It has to do with Santa Claus candles.

No, really.

The story went like this: a group of people were in a "western-oriented" restaurant in which each table had these Santa Claus shaped candles. They were there for their weekly get-together but this time they stayed a very long time and the candle burned down to the end. And what did they see at the bottom of the candle? A little metal box with a grill. A microphone! Someone had planted a microphone at their table to spy on them and they caught them in the act!

Now the thing is, the first time I heard this story I heard it as a first-person story. "We" were in a restaurant and "I" saw the electronic module at the bottom of the Santa Claus candle. I was very new to China at the time so I still had my paranoid schizophrenic glasses on and I believed it.

Then, two years later, while I was travelling in a city in another province, I got together with some local expats. Who told the same story to me. Every detail was the same. It was a Santa Claus candle. They'd stayed later than usual. The candle burned down to the point you could see a little metal box with a grill. I did some checking, and there was definitely no link between the people I was talking to and the people who'd first told me the story.

Fast forward another two or three years ... and I get the story again. And again in the same year, different place. And again the next year.

Each time it was a story told in the first person with identical details, told in the same way, with little to no variance. And at no point could I ascertain any link between these people, so this had to have been a story that had been circulating widely for a very long time. Yet each time I encountered it, the story was identical and told as a first-person story, stretching credulity for a large number of reasons.

Crikey what an unusual story! With no twists in the tale or deviation at all. Why do you think they all tell it as first person?

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I genuinely have no idea. If only one or two of them had gone the "personal story" route I might have actually believed the tale. But one person after another reporting it as "I did/saw this" just baffles me. I don't know if it's confabulation or some kind of leg-pulling exercise.

It's the Chinese expat version of drop bears, then?

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 2 points 9 hours ago

Sort of? Except it's not like a rite of passage. You just occasionally, for at least 15 years, stumbled over someone who would swear that it happened to them. At least the drop bear gag is so frequent you know it's a joke pretty quickly.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 4 points 1 day ago

Ah of course leg pulling would make sense

That chinese strawberries have needles in them so children would eat them and they will puncture their stomachs, because reasons, even though they were turkish strawberries. Also heard similar one but with razors and different food.

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

This actually happened in Australia a few years ago. Like 2022 I think. Some strawberries had razors in them. I don't think anyone got hurt, but it did cause a pretty big scare for a few weeks.

[–] nesc@lemmy.cafe 2 points 17 hours ago

First time I've heard this story was close to twenty years ago. 😺

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 2 points 22 hours ago

These ones? If so, that would be a neat trick given they've got a sizable stone inside.

That Chicken McNuggets were made of pink slime, including feet, guts, eyeballs, and beaks.

It got so bad the company had to do PR damage control and hire Grant from Mythbusters to go visit Tyson Foods and report back.

Random sorry time: I stated this urban legend as a fact to a classmate in 2007. He called me out and demanded proof. So I sat down at home (this was before smartphones were common, back in the old) and went to YouTube, to find a video about it. Obviously I never found it, but I did come across videos of rabbits beeing slaughtered in a Mexican food fabric. The person doing it was taking them out of a cage and slaughtered them right in front of the others, so that all the other rabbits could see what was coming. Started a process in my that lewd me to become a vegetarian and eventually a vegan, which I have been for over 10 years now.

Kentucky Fried Chicken had to change their name to KFC because the meat is lab grown and doesn't come from chickens anymore.

Hey, as long as they used chicken cells with the same (or better) nutritional and flavour profiles, I wouldn't have a problem with them calling it chicken. I'd probably buy it more often if the chickens didn't have to die each time.

IIRC, they experimented a bit a few years ago but haven't had a widespread rollout as far as I know.

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 3 points 1 day ago

This, but the chickens have some supernumerary number of legs and wings, which legally makes them not chickens.

Also, the fruit in McDonald’s apple pies isn’t apples but chayote stewed in apple sauce, because that’s cheaper and has much the same texture.

That Prince removed two if his ribs so he could fellate himself.

Also my friends friend was playing a ouija board with people and the glass was moving. He was skeptical so asked it to say his older brothers name and it spelled the wrong name. He told his mum and she burst into tears and said he had an older brother who died as a baby.

[–] beckerist@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I heard it as Marilyn Manson, not Prince, probably 25 years ago.

[–] Gloomy@mander.xyz 1 points 16 hours ago

Yeah, that was the one that came to my mind when I read the question.

Oh a side note, I find it interesting how these things spread so wide pre Internet. I'm assuming we live on different continents (I'm in Europe).

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 3 points 1 day ago

Yep it was about then for me too
