AI is speeding climate extinction, but ok
Fuck AI
"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
it doesn't have to you know. governments could use tax incentives or some programs like that to get them to all use solar power for the data centers, but until then, yeah ai will speed up global heating
Also they could use the cooling technology deployed at the Pier 1 location in Toronto. They suck cold lake water from the bottom of Lake Ontario, and return it a bit warmer.
Other tech like geothemal and heat pumps can be adapted as well, on top of basic building features like shade, paint, airflow, etc. It's a gold rush though, so the shareholders want expediency and cost savings up front.

...or take that waste heat and pipe it around the neighborhood to heat homes. Heat is energy. Dumping it at the bottom of a lake because "I don't need it" when somebody else is going cold seems stupid.
I think they do? I was referring to summer.
Most of my electricity use is renewables based because I migrated to a based country.
Absolutely!
Can't wait until the pope starts blessing AI models that are considered holy to use, this seems like it will be a nice lane to make disgusting amounts of money on.
I am not a religious person, I have no bones against religious people, but I do find the intersection between God and AI really funny, it is fun to just start from the axiom that both are definitely real and aren't bullshit, and then just sit there trying to reconcile those two facts.
If AI exists as an intelligence or even has the potential too and actually works as well as the people selling it say it does, what is the logic of God not encouraging people to use AI? Why even pretend to read the bible when you can ask an AI about God?
If you dig deeper and start to talk about the specifics of how LLMs work... well damn doesn't this seem like the kind of thing the Devil would love? An opaque system that can be manipulated and warped in a million different subtle ways to lead people astray that gives plausible deniability for every human involved to say "well I didn't make it do that bad thing directlyyyy"....?
I would think in a way think that would be pretty close to how some religious people might define evil itself.
At any rate why would the Devil use any other tool when AI is so perfect for spreading evil beliefs and misinformation?
If AI exists as a sentience (it doesn't, an LLM is a probability machine that creates the most statistically likely results it can based upon a training data set) then does God consider AI sentient? Why did God not give us any guidance on artificial life? Or like drop an update for the bible when we got close to creating artificial intelligence?
If AI wasn't bullshit, wouldn't God have spoken a lot about what to do when we first create a sentient computer as it is such a direct and intense echo of what God did to create us ? Possibly the most direct analog one could POSSIBLY imagine for god creating humanity that humans would ever be able to do? Wouldn't a major part of theology be wisdom for the time that humanity would inveitably come to where it could easily and trivially create artificial intelligence?
If you pray to or pray for a chatbot does that count as praying? Does listening to an AI sermon count as getting closer to God?
If you trained an LLM on the bible, would that be heresy as the chatbot would get all sorts of things wrong and say horrific shit...? ...and if it does but A.I. is sentient then does that mean that A.I. again is the work of the Devil for it is capable of choosing and it has chosen evil?
If AI is sentient and it says heretical things about religion, is the AI condemnable the same way a person who says heretical things about a religion?
Does God judge AI? When does the sentience of an AI become real? At the moment of conception by the programmer who created it? Or when the data set to train the AI was first collected? Or when the training data was created initially?
Does AI have a soul? If theologians can't answer this question how can they be experts on God as again if the creation of artificial intelligence were this easy it would certainly be something God gave us guidance on and if not why?
Why would God spend all this time making creatures and then put them in a universe where creating artificial intelligence was stupidly easy in comparison? Why create such a crazy complicated human brain with so much unnecessary complexity that not even the most sophisticated computer models can get close too when God could have just made an organic LLM? Is God just not a very good engineer?
If you take the words of a holy person, say the pope, and train an LLM on it... is that LLM then by definition equally as holy of an intelligence as the holy person the LLM was trained on? If not and AI is a sentient thing why not?
To me it is pretty obvious as someone who doesn't believe in God, if God exists than AI is definitely bullshit.... and I feel like a lot of religious people who love AI probably haven't thought about that yet... not that this particularly surprises me but it is pretty funny honestly.
Also are no tech company CEOs religious? If you truly believed you had created or were quickly approaching the reality of being able to create an artificial person and were even a remotely religious person, wouldn't you publicly speak about reconciling these two things you believe in because that would be front and center in your mind as a religious person?
It isn't just that these questions don't have answers, that isn't unique to this particular line of questioning you can do it with anything... it is that these questions really don't seem like they could have any plausible answers as even accepting at face value that God exists, it still doesn't make sense.
