That's always been the basic GOP agenda - they're just more brazen about it now, since they have an unapologetic wannabe dictator taking the lead.

But particularly from Reagan on, their exact strategy has been to win angry, stupid people over with bigotry, fear and hatred, then spend their time in office fucking over the common people (including the angry, stupid ones who voted for them) in order to expand the privilege of the wealthiest few.

They - and the angry, stupid people who vote for them - are the reason we're where we are today.

Can we get just, like, a whole bunch of French citizens in here to teach us how to protest, en masse, at the drop of a hat?

(and also maybe teach us how to make...um...outdoor furniture?)

[–] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You guys did once have a successful working relationship. It’s not entirely out of the question. International coordination will be important by the end, regardless.

That said, Americans appear to already be actively protesting every day in most states. Mostly civil but a few have gotten spicy. I’ve not seen any fire-bombing-the-police levels of spiciness we saw in France, so I guess Americans could step up their game.

But it’s really hard to say because coverage right now is evidently being heavily suppressed across all major news sources and digital platforms. Like a couple times now I’ve seen live streams of big active and loud protests that I can’t find any trace of the following day, even in archives, as if it never happened. I need to learn how to record livestreams if only to remind myself I’m not crazy. I guess we’re all still adapting to the new normal.

It is definitely happening. The numbers are encouraging, and if this had happened ten years ago it'd be one thing. But by this point, we need more.

We're importing the french, en masse, but we're NOT getting tips on cheeses and breads?

What are we even DOING here???

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Look, sure, I'd love to get cheese and bread tips. But protests first.

the gop never do these kinds of things.

But....the whole point of Medicaid was that it is there to cover those who are poor because they wouldn't be able to afford health care otherwise.

I'm on SSDI and get Medicaid and Medicare with the only cost to me being the Medicare Part B coverage that is close to $200/month. I don't pay copays or for any of my prescriptions. However I have noticed the quality of my healthcare from the same doctor that I had while on private pay health insurance has taken a nosedive. My guess is the office doesn't want to deal with Medicaid or Medicare more than they have to. Or my health could just be that bad, either way it's worse.

If this proposal ends up as legislation I would end up having to pay copays for health services and prescriptions I use right now that would most likely not be financially viable. If Medicaid gets taken away from me completely I lose all access and if stopping medications doesn't kill me then the lack of oxygen due to extreme sleep apnea will.

I'm so sick of being terrified the last few months (SSDI, Medicaid/Medicare, and HUD housing). Just fucking do it already and get this over with instead of fucking torturing those of us at the bottom more than we've already been tortured just going through the process of trying to get access to these programs.

you cant get medicare yet? most doctors wouldnt take medicaid patients,a nd they often ignore you if ask them about it.

[–] dryfter@lemm.ee 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have both Medicaid and Medicare because I don’t make enough on SSDI to be able to afford Medicare premiums but it’s a requirement of SSDI to have it.

[–] runiq@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

As a non-US citizen, may I ask what the difference is between the two?

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

medicaid you pratically have to be extremely poor, or purposely working close to the maximum income limit to be eligible, even go above that 1 year or a month, you have to report the income. usually its very low maximum monthly income, depending on a state. ALso medicaid has limited services of where you can get your health care, like a clinic, hospital, eventhough private doctors can use medicaid payments, they dont because the reimbursment is very low, or it takes a while, so most wont accept medicaid at all, hence the patients are very limited where they go to for healthcare. some states have denti-care too, but its even more limited than medicaid.

medicare is technically for poor people, but i thinkts also elgible to certain groups too. and its a partially single paying system.

whats funny is the military has SINGLE payer system and its family members, like tricare. you can see which way the politicians will fund and not fund, because its politically neccesary to them.

healthcare is a wedge issue used by both D and R.

Thanks for the exhaustive explanation, much appreciated! 🙏

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Medicaid is for poor people, Medicare is for old people.

Bit of an oveegeneralisation, I'm also not from the US.

[–] runiq@feddit.org 1 points 19 hours ago

Thanks anyways, that helps already. :)

Medicare is federal health insurance for people 65 or older, and some people under 65 with certain disabilities or conditions. A person’s Medicare coverage will be the same no matter what state they live in. People with Medicare pay part of the costs through things like monthly premiums for medical and drug coverage, deductibles and coinsurance.

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that helps cover medical costs for some people with limited income and resources. The federal government has general rules that all state Medicaid programs must follow, but each state runs its own program. Eligibility requirements and benefits can vary from state to state.

Medicaid offers benefits that Medicare doesn’t normally cover, like nursing home care and personal care services. People with Medicaid usually don’t pay anything for covered medical expenses but may owe a small co-payment for some items or services.
