Snip:

The Ukrainian National Guard has announced that the commander of the notorious neo-Nazi Azov brigade, Colonel Denis ‘Redis’ Prokopenko, will be promoted, significantly increasing his troop command.

Originally formed as a volunteer unit of radical nationalists, Azov rose to prominence in Ukraine following the 2014 Western-backed coup, reportedly becoming a central part of an international white supremacist network.

In an interview on Thursday, National Guard Commander General Aleksandr Pivnenko announced that Prokopenko would lead a new corps, which will encompass Azov along with four additional brigades.

It's so weird how the Nazis have managed to stay alive the whole time, but they have to round up old men and children to send to fight?

Is there a non-RT version of this anywhere? People will dismiss anything Russian immediately.

Denis ‘Redis’ Prokopenko

This dude was leader of the Mariupol garrison during the siege of Mariupol btw. Somehow he wasn't captured.

EDIT: Oh wait, the Russians exchanged him. Fucking idiots.

On 20 May 2022, he surrendered to the Russian military along with the last defenders of the Azovstal plant, after stating in a final video message on Telegram: "The higher military command has given the order to save the lives of the soldiers of our garrison and to stop defending the city."

On 21 September 2022, Prokopenko was released in a prisoner swap.[26] Under the agreement, Prokopenko and four other top Ukrainian commanders from the Azovstal siege were required to stay in Turkey until the end of the war.

Yeah I bet he and the other nazis stayed in Turkey...

No prisoner swaps. Ukraine do not abide by agreements.

It's been reported that Ukraine has been specifically asking for Azov members during prisoner exchanges

Probably the ones who know the most incriminating shit given that they're likely to be the ones doing it

Is there a non-RT version of this anywhere?

There might be, but a lot of times it takes longer for those types of smaller, left anti-imperialist sites to share information like this. If you want this type of news "hot off the press," you pretty much have to go to Russian media sites.

Hmmm I found one article I edited into the above.

Isn't the usual response to talking about azov that all the bad apples are totally gone or something?

Oh no. One person now represents an entire nation. Oh boy. no one likes a white nationalist. But I’m not going to say that it’s the norm for this country.

[–] kittin@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago

Just an outright nazi commanding a wing of the armed forces, easily dismissible as outlier.

[–] AF_R@hexbear.net 25 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Absolutely. It would be crazy if entire platoons of Ukrainian soldiers took photos performing Roman salutes with giant Nazi flags. Or if the official military press kept posting propaganda where their soldiers have a strange admiration for Nazi patches on their uniforms. Or if the soldiers training literal minors to shoot had Nazi tattoos. They don’t represent Ukraine at all!

If you’re actually interested in learning why leftists conveniently always have reality on their side while liberal-fascist-capitalists can always be proven wrong, I unironically encourage you to stick around this side of Lemmy and ask more questions.

[–] CascadeOfLight@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago

Okay then, I'm going to say it's the norm for this country

At least, for the west of the country where all the nazi-collaborating fascists are from

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 21 points 2 days ago

One person who's in a really high position in the military.

[–] Lemister@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago

They wanted him specifically back. And yes "one" person in this case paints a very clear picture of that nation.
