Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

I've been on rednote for three months and if there's one thing I've learned about China, it is they are very proud of their reforestation efforts

I really want to see Trump plant a tree. Like, take a spade, dig a hole and put a sapling in there. It would be amazing.

[–] lib1@hexbear.net 45 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

You’ve seen standing lessons. Now get ready for digging lessons. Stanley Yelnats style

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 2 weeks ago

Ahahah I loved that movie

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

One of the few movies where they pretty much nailed everything from the book.

supposedly this was because they didn't want to make the actor gain a lot of weight, or lose a lot of weight when stanley becomes skinnier. still, they should have just cast a fat kid. how many main characters are fat in children's media? im drawing a blank

the actor was shia labeouf. they wanted a celeb and famous actor, so they didn't get a fat one. it's that simple but it's integral to his character in the book and internal monologue and arc.

[–] blobjim@hexbear.net 28 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

He did... or at least, moved around some dirt

[–] NuraShiny@hexbear.net 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This doesn't count, I want him to have to dig the hole.

[–] carpoftruth@hexbear.net 19 points 2 weeks ago

new rule: any candidate for elected office should video themselves planting a tree

[–] Guamer@hexbear.net 64 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Imagine a modern us president doing anything labor-adjacent

[–] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 27 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Funnily, the only example I can think of is Bush cutting down trees

[–] Z_Poster365@hexbear.net 31 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Trump worked McDonald’s drive thru for a photo op lol

Trump worked McDonald’s drive thru for a photo op lol

This was the most genius propaganda thing he ever did. Americans respond well to stuff like that.

Idk about Poppy, but Dubya was lambasted by libs for taking too much time off during times of particular crisis. More than you'd expect, he spent the time he wasn't golfing on "clearing brush" at his ranch for some reason. Conservatives kind of embraced it as a manly thing and defended him taking time off to pretend to work on his ranch

damn this picture fucked met up a bit. I though the woman on the right was wearing the grasses as a skirt, and then though that the woman on the left was bending at some ungodly angle and fitting into the tiny grass skirt that the dude (is that mussolini?) was holding and checking out.

[–] frippa@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yea he's the 🙃 man. Also the woman on the far left looks like an eldritch horror lol, can't distinguish the hat from the face.

There might be more to this. Never underestimate communist leader planting trees. For example in 1940 Stalin and Beria planted trees around the airport at Smolensk and in 2010 fash president of Poland Kaczyński (with lots of his cronies) died in plane crash there.

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 43 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It is well known that communist trees can sense nearby fascists, and then respond accordingly.

To ~~Isengard~~ Berlin! Though ~~Isengard~~ Berlin be ringed and barred with doors of stone; Though ~~Isengard~~ Berlin be strong and hard, as cold as stone and bare as bone, We go, we go, we go to war, to hew the stone and break the door; For bole and bough are burning now, the furnace roars - we go to war!

if this was about a head of state within the imperial core or periphery ignoring developments in designated foreign adversaries, it'd be rightfully lampooned as site tagline material. this is nonsense drivel on par with 'kamala green suit' epic clapback trash

Elsewhere, governments may have been glued to the television

begging for one example, the entire screenshotted excerpt hangs on this (likely imaginary) counterexample

hey quiet nerd, china good

This BBC article was released on April 4

This CGTN video was posted on April 4

There is a CGTN article here with another video that dates the planting event as April 3rd.

I wasn't talking about the tree planting. I was talking about the text I quoted. Here it is again.

Elsewhere, governments may have been glued to the television

I think the PRC and CPC are great! I just hate this style of 'journalism'. If anything, the news here is that the bastion of reactionary liberalism in the BBC is doing it for the PRC. I.e. their trump derangement is stronger than their sinophobia.

When I wrote the bit you quoted:

the entire screenshotted excerpt hangs on this (likely imaginary) counterexample

I meant that the framing of the article, that the tree-planting was a deliberate 'message to Washington', hangs on the hypothetical (other governments glued to the television) that the author assumes to be true.

If we don't give the publisher the benefit of the doubt (and when it comes to the BBC, I don't), this is just another form of orientalist 'China-watching'. Except instead of the author picking apart some inane nonsense to paint those inscrutable orientals in a negative light, they're doing so to paint them positively.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I 100% believe Trump is glued to a television.

The others maybe not.

[–] falgscode@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They weren't talking about Trump! They were talking about other countries impacted by the tariffs.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah probably

Let libs enjoy things

Politics aside starting a trade war with the country that has centralized control of every sector of the economy and can make rapid top-down changes to it in times of crisis just sounds like a really stupid thing to do when your own economy is just "make sure rich people stay rich no matter what nothing else matters"
