I've been slowly working on de-Googling my life more, but the second I see "Gulf of America" in Google Maps I will be deleting everything of theirs even my Gmail.

Google lost all my respect when they dropped the "don't be evil" then doubled down on the being evil in pursuit of profit part.

My life is 100% degoogled. Took some time but I like it very much. Recently, I switched from OsmAnd (complex) to OrganicMaps (simple) and it's great. I don't get the traffic information, but this is how it is when there is noone tracking phones. I pay 1€ a month for Posteo-email and sync my contacts plus three calendars from them to my phone with DAVx³. It's perfect.

Google is pretty well known for displaying certain 'contested' things with different names in different countries.

It will change only for those viewing from the US I believe, not the rest of the world.

That this should even be 'contested' is a joke, but Google views this Trump-pandering as the price of their seat at the top table for this new administration, and they're quite happy to do it.

If we have to rename it, my vote is for the "Gulf of CUM" (Cuba, USA and Mexico)

That's fair isnt it? 💦

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 38 points 4 days ago (2 children)

As a US citizen I want it left as the Gulf of Mexico.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 23 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I'd be down for gulf of cum

[–] atx_aquarian@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No no, we're still talking about the map.

[–] idunnololz@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

While we're renaming things can we also rename NAFTA to CUMFTA

[–] nexguy@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (2 children)

So then in 4 years if a dem gets elected everything gets changed back... then a few years later if a rep gets elected...flipflop forever?

[–] RainBlast@startrek.website 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Reread what you replied to. He wants it to be called the same thing it has always been called and what the rest of the world calls it. No president should be able to arbitrarily rename shit every 4 years. It dissolves the utility of giving things names.

[–] nexguy@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

I agree and it wasn't a reply, just a thought that it could technically flip back and forth...ridiculously. which is very sad. It will always be gulf of Mexico and denali to me.

[–] state_electrician@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Do you still think there will be an election in four years?

[–] DiaDeLosMuertos@aussie.zone 2 points 3 days ago

Well hopefully there won't be a trump in four years.

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

There will be concepts of an election. Just like in Russia.

[–] sik0fewl@lemmy.ca 0 points 4 days ago

It sounds like their is only one English language version of Maps, so Canada, UK, etc. will also change.

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 60 points 4 days ago

The dumbest timeline...again.

[–] ethman42@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

According to Google:

When our policy says that we display the "primary, common, local" names for a body of water, each of those three adjectives has an important and distinct meaning. By saying "primary", we aim to include names of dominant use, rather than having to add every conceivable local nickname or variation. By saying "common", we mean to include names which are in widespread daily use, rather than giving immediate recognition to any arbitrary governmental re-naming. In other words, if a ruler announced that henceforth the Pacific Ocean would be named after her mother, we would not add that placemark unless and until the name came into common usage. Finally, by saying "local", we aim to reflect the primary and common names used by countries that actually border the body of water, as they are the countries recognized under international law as having a special sovereign stake in it.

[–] ramble81@lemm.ee 29 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Huh, I’m in the US and noticed it’s still the Gulf of Mexico.

[–] Brain@lemmy.zip 19 points 4 days ago

It's not official until the Government enters it into the Geographic Names Information System. Once that happens Google will begin changing their maps.

[–] CCMan1701A@startrek.website 19 points 4 days ago

They are likely waiting for the cartographers to finish their jobs.... Unless they were asked to resign... Who knows how this government functions at this point.

Waiting for the presidential cars to be replaced with cyber trucks.

[–] AndrewZabar@lemmy.world 22 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Why did the name get changed? U.S.A. needed another ego stroke? Our public perception of nonstop ego-masturbation slowing down?

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 25 points 4 days ago (2 children)

The usual white nationalism bullshit.

[–] Macallan@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

aka the usual Trump bullshit..

[–] someacnt@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

Reminds me of when I posted "Trump's white nationalist America" to a place right wingers frequent. They freaked out pretty hard. Gee, I wonder why.

[–] systemglitch@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] DiaDeLosMuertos@aussie.zone 1 points 3 days ago

He's mad all right.

Other documents that mention "the gulf of Mexico" will become unenforceable.

[–] CCMan1701A@startrek.website 18 points 4 days ago (4 children)

I think the plan is if your in the US the name will change. I think. Something about USA being classified as a sensitive nation when before names didn't hurt us.

Backbone lost.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It is fucking freedom fries all over again.

[–] FabledAepitaph@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

It will always be the Gulf of Mexico to me

[–] Tronn4@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Being run by snowflakes

[–] TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

Ahhh yes. The United States. A sensitive nation of white nationalist snowflakes. It's honestly on brand.

[–] JokeDeity@lemm.ee 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm legitimately saddened by the fact this even needs to happen because of this moronic cretin.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm more worried about Elon ruining around in the treasury department at the moment.

Whatever they call the golf for the next 4 years is just whatever they call it for the next 4 years.

Google does a lot of geolocation dependent map drawing where borders are shown for one location and one country and in another location in another country

[–] Maiq@lemy.lol 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

With all the illegal shit they are already doing and are going to do I personally don't think there will be another election and if there is it will be like those in russia where the opposition gets imprisoned, released after the election and eventually murdered.

The gulf is renamed by fuckwits. Who says we have to use it. I refuse to call it anything but the Gulf of Mexico.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

I personally don’t think there will be another election

I give it 60:40 there will have to be a coup to get him out this time.

dear lord, I hope we have it in us.

[–] esc27@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The people with the authority to officially change the name in the U.S. did so. The opportunity to do something about it was 3 months ago when only about a third of eligible voters voted against this crap. So here we are, and it is only going to get worse.

There is still reason to pressure Google in the US (based on this policy of theirs) and especially abroad (as they plan to use both names outside USA and Mexico). Otherwise, they are handing Trump an easy win.

[–] TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

So far I've got MapQuest and something called Maps.ME ready to replace Google.
