Let's hope it delivers

Cool, but it the more learn the more I find that I'd rather Dansup wasn't becoming the darling of the fediverse.

[–] lambalicious@lemmy.sdf.org 52 points 1 week ago (3 children)

You're free to start delivering code and release of your own! Dansup is walking, most of everyone else is talking.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Dansup is walking, most of everyone else is talking.

Isn't that because Dan hasn't open-sourced his project yet and doesn't let anybody else contribute?

[–] lambalicious@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 6 days ago

Of course it is, but then again: it's because everyone else is talking. No one stops everyone else from starting their own project and overtaking his by sheer power of community. Until that happens, one man would have to suffice.

Isn't that because Dan hasn't open-sourced his project yet

Wrong: https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/blob/dev/LICENSE

and doesn't let anybody else contribute?

Hmm, while there have been 158 contributors, a very small percent were from the other developers: https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/graphs/contributors

This information is pretty easy to look up.

I meant the Loops side of things, my bad.

[–] GrumpyDuckling@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

From what I read he's the sole dev on three different large projects and ignoring issue requests.

[–] lambalicious@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Well then, get working on the competition.

Opens a local pub, check m8

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Issue requests or pull requests?

[–] haverholm@kbin.earth 10 points 1 week ago

Dansup is walking

Looks more like he's juggling projects while riding a unicycle, and doing insult comedy at the same time. I think it's fair to question the sustainability of this, and if/when he'll publically self destruct.

[–] Quicky@lemmy.world 38 points 1 week ago

Yeah he’s definitely up himself, and highly prone to preschool outbursts on Mastodon. No doubt he deserves plaudits for ambition and talent, but a bit more humility and grace would do him good. I’ve cringed at a few of his (often retrospectively deleted) posts unnecessarily slagging off other devs.

That said, I’m extremely grateful for what he’s trying to do, and his genuine desire to expand the fediverse.

I feel like Mastodon is the only one who did things right.

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Isn't Gargron regularly criticized by the community for refusing to deliver some features?

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 11 points 1 week ago

And he has turned over Mastodon to a non-profit company which should be able to gain more resources to develop Mastodon.

[–] tisktisk@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago (3 children)

what's this mean? darling is a nothing word I thought? (Not best english)

[–] Quicky@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It means the dev can be a bit of a dick, and it’s not always a great look. “Darling” in this instance means “face of” or “icon”.

[–] tisktisk@piefed.social -5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Who isn't from time to time? We're in a era of sensitivity either way

[–] Quicky@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I suppose, but he did start name-calling just because another developer had the audacity to start building their own fediverse photo sharing platform (Vernissage). Then apologised and removed the toot.

Bearing in mind the other developer also actually built a functioning and rather excellent third party Pixelfed app (Impressia) that he wrote because he got frustrated with the lack of development on the official Pixelfed app, and which was available on app stores years earlier, it seemed beyond unnecessary.

Weirdo

FYI "darling" can also be used with a spouse or romantic partner. Your husband or girlfriend can be your "darling" just like "honey" or "baby". It has a similar meaning in this case, where "darling of the group" means everyone really likes them, even if not sexual/romantic.

And this use, "darling of the ____", is a slightly older, but relatively common, saying.

[–] technomad@slrpnk.net 17 points 1 week ago

Wow, that's incredible!

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 15 points 1 week ago

awesome. I think this will really motivate people moving over to stay for a bit.

[–] shittydwarf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Anyone recommend a server?

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 9 points 1 week ago

I'm using Social.photo, tho' I have no specific criteria, tho' it has the distinct advantage that it is still up and running.

[–] 299792458ms@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I would not know really, but there is a a new one hosted by the Pixelix Client creator. He shared it somewhere in his mastodon account.

[–] haverholm@kbin.earth 2 points 1 week ago

Probably pixelix.social? The app website is app.pixelix.social 😉

The people there seem pretty chill in my experience so far.

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Why is it so inactive? I made an account and there are barely any posts or activity.

[–] Free_Opinions@feddit.uk 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I moved from Instagram to Pixelfed around a year ago and went from barely anyone seeing my photography to literally no one seeing it.

[–] Cheems@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I get likes on cat pictures and that's it. The likes always seem to come after I go to bed so I assume somewhere else in the world is where the exposure is coming from

[–] nasi_goreng@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They don't have proper "trending" page, that's why it seems barren.

At least on Pixelfed.social, there are a lot of active photographers, both casuals and professional posting their work there.

[–] 299792458ms@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

Agree with this one
