Summary

Donald Trump suggested Canada could become the U.S.’s “51st state,” claiming it would benefit Canadians through lower taxes and military protection.

The remark follows tensions over Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, which shocked Canadian leaders, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who likened it to betrayal.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dismissed the annexation talk as unserious but unveiled a $1 billion border security plan to address U.S. concerns.

The escalating rhetoric, including insults from Trump ally Elon Musk, highlights strained Canada-U.S. relations ahead of Trump’s second term.

I'm not looking forward to 4 more years of this dementia riddled jackoff. I still don't understand why we treated his coup attempt with kid gloves in the first place? Brazil has lived under brutal authoritarian regimes before, and took steps to stamp out the attempted coup by bolsonaro. We should have immediately arrested Trump, and co. Jan 6th was a distraction for the organized attempt behind the scenes. He'll, trump fired a bunch of pentagon generals trying to find someone who would institute martial law for him.

"my idea would be a great idea!"

also, Québec would 100% go independent

[-] Nougat@fedia.io 11 points 6 hours ago

Because otherwise, Trump would send in the US military to forcibly remove all the French street signs.

They would lose, just like last time. Underestimate Quebec at your own peril.

Just one state? With 40 million people? Okay, enjoy the House of Representatives massively ballooning.

[-] Carrolade@lemmy.world 8 points 5 hours ago

Prob just a territory, really. Can't be ruining our perfectly even 100 Senators.

It wouldn’t though. It would be reapportioned. It’s locked at 435 due to the 1929 Permanent Apportionment Act. You’ll note that 1929 precedes the introduction of both Alaska and Hawaii as states.

The house being locked to that number diminishes the legislative (and electoral college) power of larger states (which is infuriatingly by-design).

[-] anarchrist@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 6 hours ago

The house needs to balloon massively anyway. The numbers are way under where they have been historically for representatives per capita.

[-] raktheundead@fedia.io 9 points 5 hours ago

The US has one of the worst ratios of representatives in their legislature per capita in the world, no less.

That's about the same population as California actually.

[-] PedroMaldonado@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

Sure beats being an actual serious president, i guess

[-] ninjabard@lemmy.world 15 points 7 hours ago

This might be the single stupidest thing he's ever said.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 34 points 7 hours ago

Oh I don't know. There's so many options there.

[-] Makeitstop@lemmy.world 9 points 6 hours ago

I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn't even the dumbest thing he says today.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 5 hours ago

It definitely doesn't rise to the level of 'electric boat vs. shark.'

Nuking hurricanes is up there.

That's just regular stupid. Saying an entire country would make a great state is advanced stupid.

Don't really like the idea of Canada as a 51st state but maybe we can talk our way into free shipping from the U.S.

Aren't Canadians less conservative on average, than Americans?

So sure thing. Republicans might never win an election ever again. Look at all those sweet sweet electoral votes.

Or make it even better, admit each Canadian Province as a separate state, Republicans may never control a majority in the Senate ever again.

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 hours ago

less conservative on average

Yes. But, like states, provinces are each all over the spectrum, from "nice" to "winnebago aristocracy hoodwinking the farmers". Themselves, some of them would support a bully from whom they cribbed their 'tough guy' drivel.

[-] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 hours ago

I think this is one of those "arch conservative" of one country turns out to be left of center in the US.

Sir you're about 48 years too early for that statement. Canada doesn't get annexed until 2072!

[-] Nomecks@lemmy.ca 8 points 6 hours ago

Can't send munitions to Ukraine if they're all being used to Ukraine Canada

[-] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 6 hours ago

Exactly. Trump always doing putin’s bidding

Much more likely with him taking over is the West and East Coast split up and became Canadian provides and him ending up ruling fly over states.
