Mainly sharing because of how insane Badenoch is. 'Shall I tell everyone I skip lunch and just eat steak at my desk? Yes, that'll make me seem relatable.'

EDIT: Huh, the headline in the article is different from the one on the homepage, so now I seem insane. Touché, Kemi.

Subtle hint that she'd like to remove the right to a lunch break at work? Wouldn't surprise me with a Tory.

[-] Docus@lemmy.world 25 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

BBC changed the article. Yesterday there was the ‘not real food’ one, later followed by Starmer’s defence of the sandwich. The ‘not real food’ quote is still in the spectator article linked in the BBC one. So OP, you are not the insane one here

"I don't think sandwiches are a real food, it's what you have for breakfast."

So breakfast isn't a real meal either? 😭

Hi, weird Yankee here. What the fuck? Who's Badenoch and what do they mean?

Edit: to be clear, I've read the article, but it I've been totally bamboozled. Did y'all get infected with the brain rot from over here?

[-] frankPodmore@slrpnk.net 13 points 4 days ago

Kemi Badenoch is the leader of the Conservative party, and Leader of the Opposition. Why she's talking about sandwiches no one knows, though brain rot is a definite possibility.

[-] Colour_me_triggered@lemm.ee 3 points 4 days ago

Eating steak doesn't provide the glucose needed for healthy brain function.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 5 points 4 days ago

She's not trying to make any kind of point. She's literally talking about sandwiches and her hatred of them. She legitimately feels that this is something that should be made public and that she needs to tell everyone about. She's nuts.

She's leader of the opposition because the only viable candidate managed to accidentally knock himself out of the race (not a good candidate, merely a moderately viable candidate). All that was then left was an insane conspiracy theorist, who at one point seriously suggested illegal immigrants had developed the ability to teleport, and her. The insane conspiracy theorist would probably be the safer choice.

If she's still around in 6 months time I'll be surprised.

[-] Rogue@feddit.uk 2 points 3 days ago

Who was the viable candidate?

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago

Cleverly. He may be a smug supercilious prat, probably not an election winner either, but he at least did have some sort of clue about how to do the actual job.

Unfortunately for him he tried some political maneuverings and ended up shooting both his own feet off. Effectively organizing 20 whole people was apparently a task beyond him and his running mate.

I work with people with severe mental disabilities and this is still one of the least put-together people I've heard of.

[-] EnderMB@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Brexit not only predated Trump, but legitimised his campaign at a time when people were laughing him off as a joke candidate. The brain rot is everywhere, all the time.

'Asked by Sky News about Badenoch's comments, Miliband told Sky News, "I'm here for the sandwich content.

"I wish I could have a cross-party consensus here with Kemi Badenoch but I can't. I think I need to persuade her of the delights of a bacon sandwich." '

I love how Ed Miliband just doesn't give a fuck anymore and just shitposts

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 4 points 4 days ago

I think part of it is that Labour are quite happy to just go along with the Tory insanity, because it means that we are not talking about the winter fuel allowance anymore.

[-] frankPodmore@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 days ago

Yeah, it's good comms all round to keep a 'Badenoch is mental' story in the news. Makes her look bad and, as you say, means they talk less about anything unpopular they've done.

[-] Schal330@lemmy.world 16 points 5 days ago

Hopefully Badenoch thinking lunch is for wimps will lead to her getting burnt out. She has lunch brought in and has a steak, how much more out of touch can she get.

I feel like this whole article was put together to be able to post that picture of Ed and his sandwich.

Glad they’re really getting their teeth in to the important issues of the day

[-] steeznson@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Finally someone is taking a stand against Big Sandwich

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 4 days ago

It's big meal deal you need to watch out for. They're in bed with big crisp, big chocolate bar, and big drink. They're going to take the world for everything it's got, £3.99 at a time.

[-] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 10 points 5 days ago

Great to see Badenoch bringing up pressing issues that are on the minds of the British electorate

[-] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 8 points 5 days ago

Dominic Raab hit the headlines when the then Tory minister's sandwich preferences were revealed by a former member of his staff.

She told the Daily Mirror he ordered the same lunch every day from Pret A Manger.

"He has the chicken Caesar and bacon baguette, SuperFruit pot and the Vitamin Volcano smoothie, every day. He is so weird. It's the Dom Raab Special."

Somehow that makes me dislike him slightly less.

[-] frankPodmore@slrpnk.net 6 points 5 days ago

It's oddly relatable. Let the man enjoy his one sandwich!

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

I'm not a Brit but I've eaten the same sandwich at lunch every day for years. It's relatable to just decide "this is what I eat at work"

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 4 days ago

At work I had the same lunch every single day from the cafeteria, It was great because the staff actually had it ready as soon as they sold me in line so I would just breeze on through.

[-] frankPodmore@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 days ago

My dad also took the same kind of sandwich to work for about 40 years. If it ain't broke...

[-] frazorth@feddit.uk 4 points 4 days ago

People are just fucking insane.

“I was on a train yesterday with sandwiches and it was a nightmare.”

i hate everyone involved with this story with the fire of a thousand suns

[-] frankPodmore@slrpnk.net 3 points 5 days ago

Still less than Kemi hates moist sandwiches.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 4 days ago

Why is it that every single one of her opinions has to be an expression of hatred? Does she actually like anything, or is it simply a matter that she doesn't hate everything.

[-] Emperor@feddit.uk 9 points 5 days ago

Getting to the meat of the issues now...

[-] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

I don’t really eat lunch, but that’s because I’m a wimp, not because lunch eaters are. I don’t get very hungry during the day and eating makes me tired, so I just don’t eat much at lunchtime.

OH MY GOD WHO CARES NOBODY CAN AFFORD SANDWICHES ANYMORE ANYWAY KEIR please just do your fucking job

[-] TheGrandNagus@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago

Kemi: Sandwiches aren't real food. Having a lunch break is for whimps! I have people bring me STEAK and I eat it while I work! Also Kier plans on watching Love Actually and I plan to watch DIE HARD!!

(After being questioned) Kier's spokesperson: Quite weird you're asking about this, but I know he likes tuna sandwiches and the occasional cheese toastie...

You: omg how could Kier do this?? He's not a serious politician

[-] rayquetzalcoatl@feddit.uk -5 points 5 days ago

Didn't read the article, because the headline didn't exactly give me hope that it wasn't going to be a waste of time. Both it, and the excerpt, also infer Starmer responded directly.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 4 days ago

Yeah who cares about facts. If you don't read the article you can just decide what it said all on your own and then complain about that

[-] TheGrandNagus@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

It really doesn't. The spokesperson says "I think..."

It's clearly not words from Starmer. He did not respond directly. Or seemingly even indirectly.

[-] rayquetzalcoatl@feddit.uk 1 points 4 days ago

We might be talking about different things, I realise -- when I said "the headline" and "the excerpt", I meant the title and excerpt of the post, which says "PM says they are a British institution" (in the excerpt), and "Starmer defends sandwiches" (in the title). Sorry, I could've been clearer on that!
