BBC changed the article. Yesterday there was the ‘not real food’ one, later followed by Starmer’s defence of the sandwich. The ‘not real food’ quote is still in the spectator article linked in the BBC one. So OP, you are not the insane one here

Kemi Badenoch is the leader of the Conservative party, and Leader of the Opposition. Why she's talking about sandwiches no one knows, though brain rot is a definite possibility.
Eating steak doesn't provide the glucose needed for healthy brain function.
She's not trying to make any kind of point. She's literally talking about sandwiches and her hatred of them. She legitimately feels that this is something that should be made public and that she needs to tell everyone about. She's nuts.
She's leader of the opposition because the only viable candidate managed to accidentally knock himself out of the race (not a good candidate, merely a moderately viable candidate). All that was then left was an insane conspiracy theorist, who at one point seriously suggested illegal immigrants had developed the ability to teleport, and her. The insane conspiracy theorist would probably be the safer choice.
If she's still around in 6 months time I'll be surprised.

Cleverly. He may be a smug supercilious prat, probably not an election winner either, but he at least did have some sort of clue about how to do the actual job.
Unfortunately for him he tried some political maneuverings and ended up shooting both his own feet off. Effectively organizing 20 whole people was apparently a task beyond him and his running mate.
I work with people with severe mental disabilities and this is still one of the least put-together people I've heard of.
Brexit not only predated Trump, but legitimised his campaign at a time when people were laughing him off as a joke candidate. The brain rot is everywhere, all the time.

Yeah, it's good comms all round to keep a 'Badenoch is mental' story in the news. Makes her look bad and, as you say, means they talk less about anything unpopular they've done.
Hopefully Badenoch thinking lunch is for wimps will lead to her getting burnt out. She has lunch brought in and has a steak, how much more out of touch can she get.

I'm not a Brit but I've eaten the same sandwich at lunch every day for years. It's relatable to just decide "this is what I eat at work"
At work I had the same lunch every single day from the cafeteria, It was great because the staff actually had it ready as soon as they sold me in line so I would just breeze on through.
My dad also took the same kind of sandwich to work for about 40 years. If it ain't broke...

I don’t really eat lunch, but that’s because I’m a wimp, not because lunch eaters are. I don’t get very hungry during the day and eating makes me tired, so I just don’t eat much at lunchtime.

Didn't read the article, because the headline didn't exactly give me hope that it wasn't going to be a waste of time. Both it, and the excerpt, also infer Starmer responded directly.
Yeah who cares about facts. If you don't read the article you can just decide what it said all on your own and then complain about that

It's clearly not words from Starmer. He did not respond directly. Or seemingly even indirectly.
We might be talking about different things, I realise -- when I said "the headline" and "the excerpt", I meant the title and excerpt of the post, which says "PM says they are a British institution" (in the excerpt), and "Starmer defends sandwiches" (in the title). Sorry, I could've been clearer on that!
