Summary

Donald Trump’s plan to impose sweeping tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China is raising alarm among U.S. businesses, which warn it could trigger price spikes and inflation.

Firms in industries like apparel, manufacturing, and food production fear disruptions similar to the last trade war under Trump, when retaliatory tariffs hurt exports and supply chains.

Critics argue tariffs won’t effectively reshore production or reduce the trade deficit and could lead to runaway inflation, economic instability, and consumer cost increases.

it's so blatantly gross that we're only getting these articles AFTER the election. they aren't even trying to hide the fact that they want the voters to be uninformed as possible.

[-] NineMileTower@lemmy.world 40 points 3 weeks ago

Do you honestly think that his voters are reading anything other than memes on Facebook? They aren't reading articles.

[-] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 weeks ago

"if they could read, theyd be very offended"

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 16 points 3 weeks ago

Companies can hide price increases behind tariffs and make tons of money. They didn't tell anyone because they want those sweet 25Q1 and 25Q2 profits. After that it's someone else's problem.

Companies think they can contain the incoming administration. They will not be able to. They played with fire and now are going to get burnt. We all get to burn together.

Shits going to go sideways very quickly.

I do not think it would have mattered. The Trump cult is a cult for a reason. He says jump, they ask how high. All while claiming to be free thinkers.

[-] Soulg@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

There were absolutely articles like this before the election too

One can only hope. After all, isn't this what they voted for?

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 26 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

After all, isn’t this what they voted for?

They voted for sticking it to immigrants and trans people. They don't understand a thing.

I'm stocked up and I can run on fumes. Bring it on. I can't wait to see these pampered little fucks burn in their own hypocrisy and helplessness.

Chaotic good finally gets a day. I can compress my life into a pin prick if it means I get to see some right-winger lose his boat to repossession.

Of course they don't, but I don't care anymore, at this point it's just pure and unadultered schadenfreude.

I'm not German but I feel like that word implies that the observer is uneffected by the situation they are observing. This is going to impact everyone which I imagine will significantly decrease the amount of satisfaction one could get from watching these people learn hard lessons.

Yes, you are right, but given that we are all going to be affected by the decision of a bunch of idiots (even if we are not american), the only thing that I can do is enjoy how their face will get eaten by the leopards.

Sure, we are screwed, but they are too, and so deservingly that I will enjoy their suffering.

Trumps trifecta could be a blessing in disguise, in that if the GOP continued moving as slow and calculated as they have for the last 50 years, Americans will remain the frogs sitting in the proverbial boiling pot... However if Trump is as insolent and ignorant as he appears to be, his reckless stupidity could insta-tank the economy and send the cost of living through the roof.

Obviously MAGA are too mentally ill to admit they're mentally ill, but it could shock the other 80 million adults, who stayed home in November, into action.

Likewise, if they move too aggressively with the authoritarian end goal of project 2025, they risk triggering armed resistance and civil war.

[-] krashmo@lemmy.world 19 points 3 weeks ago

Given what we've witnessed recently this seems like a lot of misplaced faith in the ability of American voters to make rational decisions.

[-] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

One trans person will commit a misguided act of violence in a protest against anti-trans laws. All price increases from then on are blamed on transgender terrorist cells targeting the supply chain.

[-] limelight79@lemm.ee 19 points 3 weeks ago

Don't worry, I'm sure the Trump administration is gearing up to pin the blame on Obama and Biden. And Harris, for good measure.

[-] pivot_root@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago

Trump’s Truth Social tariff tirade may be bluster, and Auricchio, at least, is confident there “won’t be a disaster” under a second Trump administration. “Threats during the election time are beyond reality,” he said. “I don’t believe Trump wants to disrupt world trade.”

This just in, a delusional business owner. More news at 11.

But my eggs…

[-] ilickfrogs@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Someone needs to explain to this bloody orange monkey what tariffs are.

[-] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

So inflation part two orange boogaloo?

Damn, I just wanted a couple years break.

[-] nikaaa@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I'm sorry for anybody living in the US right now. The only hope is that it will get better, in the far future, when all those billionaires will have transported themselves to Mars. Then you may find some peace, I guess.

The cheaper eggs people are about to find out.
