Honestly? He seemed pretty nervous throughout the debate and made gaffes like saying he met school shooters. The "Iranian proxies" wire probably just got crossed with the "support Israel no matter what" wire and resulted in this ridiculous sentence.
Hard to stay calibrated on exactly 99% Hitler, easy to drift a few points up or down accidentally.
