Me. Now with voyager, formally wefwef

[-] infotainment@lemmy.world 31 points 11 months ago

Voyager is seriously the best example of a PWA I’ve ever seen.

[-] TheloniusFuegoRhymes@lemmy.world 17 points 11 months ago

This is my first experience with a PWA and it is blowing my mind haha

Did a quick Google, I think it’s just a rebrand; as in, if you’ve already got wefwef, you’ve already got Voyager.

[-] Donebrach@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

Came here to say the same. It’s honesty the best mobile app I’ve tried so far.

[-] SideshowBoz@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

I tried it but unfortunately swipe to go back gesture doesn’t work. It’s good but not good enough for me yet :/

[-] infotainment@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

It does work as well as it can, but it’s sometimes a bit flakey. Sadly that’s Apple’s problem to fix.

[-] everythingsucks@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago

I’ll add a complaint. The upvote is too close to the comment button in compact mode.

[-] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

The status bar has white text in light mode even though it should be black. That’s an Apple PWA bug. There’s already an issue created for it.

Voyager is definitely the best example of a PWA I’ve seen. It’s better than most native apps.

The only web app I use, well maybe a bit of HLTB, but only because it doesn't have an app last time I checked.

You can avoid ads if you use YouTube with the Vinegar extension.

[-] fer0n@lemm.ee 5 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

I use that, too. Also features Picture in Picture, background playback, and the default video player.

[-] chrisphero@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

I was completely unaware of Vinegar, so thank you very much for the info!

Do you by any chance know if this will be affected by the YouTube Adblock ban?

[-] ultratiem@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago
[-] chrisphero@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

because it’s not an ad block per se but forces HTML?

[-] ultratiem@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

No, it just fetches the raw video file. When YT places ads all they do is pause the vid, inject them thru another instance, then resume the original vid. The overlays are handled by YT imbedded player. Together this gives YT the ability to work sort of like a TV channel.

Regards to the plugin, YT has no idea you’re using it. You're literally side stepping them.

[-] chrisphero@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Ahh this makes sense - thank you very much for the explanation!

[-] ansik@kbin.social 2 points 11 months ago

Do extensions run if I save the pages as webapps? I haven't gotten 1password to appear in kbin so I've assumed they don't work

[-] MOP@social.fossware.space 1 points 11 months ago

what browser are you using? at least it works in firefox popups

[-] ansik@kbin.social 1 points 11 months ago

Safari (iOS and Mac), and to clarify, I'm talking about web apps saved to my home screen / dock
I should give firefox a try again soon

[-] Alexandrite@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

It’s been a long time since I used YouTube in Safari because the quality just couldn’t compare to the app. Is it better nowadays?

[-] richard_wagner@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Honestly I’ll do anything if it anything that helps me avoid ads.

[-] ren@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

On Mac? All the time. Why the fuck would I install an app for a website?

[-] fer0n@lemm.ee 6 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Somewhat related: I made an iOS Shortcut that lets you customize the icons for web apps. YouTube is definitely in desperate need for that. Just run in on the website before adding it to the home screen.

Oh I use plenty… dict.cc; TikTok; Astroprint; Octoprint and Printables; Xing; LinkedIn; eBay; Etsy; AliExpress; Idealo; Chefkoch; pkmn.help (very beautiful web app btw…); and so on. I got rid of any App I don’t trust and/or where the web app gets the job done.

[-] IamAnonymous@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Have you listed the web app for AliExpress? I can’t make the website name from the web app name.

[-] Gorroth@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

You mean what URL I am using?

https://m.de.aliexpress.com

That one works for me (it’s the German site). It’s not pretty at all, but at least it avoids installing the app.

Pretty much never, unless I don’t have a choice…

[-] mnrockclimber@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 11 months ago

Same here. Native or bust. I want my apps to use common gestures, key combinations, utilize operating system features like face recognition, have common os theming, obey system preferences like dark mode, and be available offline. Any app I use on the regular must be native (not even that Electron or React Native crap).

[-] AliasWyvernspur@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Not so much web apps saved to my home screen, but 95% of my web surfing on my iOS devices are through Safari. It’s mostly stuff like streaming services that I use the apps.

[-] Rwaterhouse@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I use the Twitter web app, pretty much because I didn’t like how much data the app was collecting on my phone.

[-] drumstic@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

I tend not to because I hide all my apps and rely on Siri suggestions and Spotlight to access them. I used to have only one Home Screen with a large widget stack and the Siri app suggestion widget, but the Xbox Cloud Gaming web app is the only way to use it, so I have a second screen with just that on it

[-] sgriff@lemmy.ml 1 points 11 months ago

I don’t really yet, I sometimes use the Google Meet PWA for work but that’s a bit of a pain in the ass.
