That's actually adorable, damn

[–] BleatingZombie@lemmy.world 29 points 2 years ago

"What are you... I guess I'll do it, too!"

[–] ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca 161 points 2 years ago (2 children)

"Wait these are edible??"

*disappointment*

[–] satanmat@lemmy.world 67 points 2 years ago

The gold ones are chocolate; the silver marzipan, and the bronze peanut butter…

[–] masquenox@lemmy.world 85 points 2 years ago (6 children)

No way I'm putting that in my mouth. There's no telling where it's been.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 61 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That's what they all say... at first.

[–] masquenox@lemmy.world 17 points 2 years ago

I bet that's what you say to all the other medal winners.

[–] Plopp@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

I'd try to fit the whole thing in my mouth.

[–] curiousaur@reddthat.com 12 points 2 years ago

It's been in my pants all day, where do you think it's been?

[–] Bahnd@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It fine so long as it wasnt in the river.

[–] Th3D3k0y@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

A shit river is interestingly exactly how I'd describe most of Paris... and Cleveland

[–] Bahnd@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Hey, don't make fun of Paris like that... They havent lit the river on fire...

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

The silver medal would be the least likely to have bacteria though on account of silver's antibacterial effects.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

It's been in a LV medal case apparently

What event was this? I want to see the video of it. Edit: Found it!

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 50 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Women's gymnastics balance beam. The lady with the adorable reaction is Zhou Yaqin of China.

I assume there is video somewhere, but it's not on YouTube.

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 17 points 2 years ago (2 children)

It's on spez's personal playground, the one where he steals all content and sells it like his own: https://www.reddit.com/r/olympics/comments/1eknsdq/zhou_yaqin_reaction_on_the_podium_was_priceless/.

[–] takeda@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

LOL at her reaction "oh, we are biting the medals for the picture, but that's so unhygienic"

[–] telllos@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Digg . com !!

The missing fourth panel:
She casually bites off a chunk of her medal.
While startled, as competitive as they are the other three try to do the same.

It's some weird tradition they've started doing that I either never noticed before or it's new. People used to bite gold coins to prove they were real gold since gold is soft enough to leave a tooth mark, but I don't know if that's related to this or what. You couldn't do that with silver or bronze.

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 53 points 2 years ago (3 children)
[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Huh. I totally don't remember seeing it before now, but I've certainly watched my share of Oylmpics since the 90s.

Memory is a weird thing.

[–] NegativeInf@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I always associated it with Underdog (the superhero) as he bites the coins he's tipped as a shoe shine to test their authenticity, quite often with disappointing results.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

I do too.

"Thank you, Shoe Shine Boy, you're humble and lovable."
"Bless you, sir."

David Wallechinsky, President of the International Society of Olympic Historians told CNN in 2012, “It’s become an obsession with the photographers. I think they look at it as an iconic shot, as something that you can probably sell. I don’t think it’s something the athletes would probably do on their own.”

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

That's crazy, I thought it was from the meme.

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 26 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Olympic gold medals are also all silver with a thin gold coating.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 38 points 2 years ago (2 children)

holds the most prestigious sporting events in the world

fanfare and advertising galore

too cheap to award actual gold medals

mfw 🙄

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's not like you're gonna trade them for their material value.

[–] swab148@lemm.ee 12 points 2 years ago (2 children)

That was my whole plan, though! I was gonna get good enough at something to go get a gold medal, and then hock it for that sweet sweet cash

[–] moody@lemmings.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Best I can do is $20 and a Chipotle burrito

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 1 points 2 years ago

DEAL!

(Man this chump doesn't know food prices huh?!)

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Way back in the day they used to be real gold, but, you know, real gold isn't the most sturdy thing in the world.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You could if you had a titanium grill and the enlarged jaw of someone who abuses stimulants.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 48 points 2 years ago

Sadly, Richard Kiel is no longer with us.

i know china does this with gold tender, i'm not sure if this is just chinese, or if this is more global, but when doing transactions it's customary to take a nips to the gold to make sure it's solid gold all the way through so eventually it ends up with a number of little bite marks in it.

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Yeah I don't know it was a tradition and though "are they making sure the IOC didn't cheap out on the gold medals?"

[–] pooky55@lemm.ee 20 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well, the medals are now mostly silver.

https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/celebs/a39011500/are-olympic-medals-real-gold/

"Turns out Olympic gold medals are actually, ironically, mostly made from silver. Specifically, they’re 92.5 percent silver. However, they are plated with six grams of gold, so at least there’s that."

[–] Slovene@feddit.nl 2 points 2 years ago

That's dissappointing. I thought they were made of chocolate wrapped in gold leaf.

[–] WanderingVentra@lemm.ee 16 points 2 years ago

This is so cute lol

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Basically me all through grade school. Wait why's everyone doing this now? Ok I guess....

[–] sparkle@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

mfw i realize children learn by copying the environment around them ((developmental psychology is born))

[–] pinkystew@reddthat.com 1 points 1 year ago

That bitch looks like Draco Malfoy and I want a horse to kick her like she snuck up behind it and screamed
