  1. Canada doesn’t have states
  2. I have never heard anyone call BC the “Pacific Province” - that really sounds like someone from out east who had never thought of the west coast but knew Oregon was the Beaver State was put on the spot and made up something that sounded plausible.

Came here to begrudgingly add that. A very cool guide. But as a near 50 year BC resident I’ve never heard that.

“Beautiful BC”, Lotus Land, …?

Hah… they got it from the Wikipedia page, which looks like someone just made stuff up and linked it. Wikipedia cites a CashNetUSA 2019 blog article that’s already been taken down.

Also incorrectly coded Saskatchewan "Land of the Living Skies" as "Climate/Weather"

Anyone who's lived there knows it's a reference to the density of flying insects.

[-] CanadianCorhen@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

BCer here, never heard that.

"Supernatural BC", on the other hand.

BC calls (called) itself "the Best Place on Earth", lol. Now put that on the chart to make all 62 other Provinces, Territories and States upset.

I'd always heard "Onterrible" for Ontario, and I've definitely never heard anyone call it "the Heartland Province".

Am I going insane or did they flood Maryland on this map? I seriously can't see it, just a suspiciously Maryland-shaped bay where Maryland should be

[-] cazssiew@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Came here with the same question

[-] Legonatic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Maryland has really fallen off the map these days

[-] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

Quebec has their own flag.

[-] pedz@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

And a fleur de lys would be more appropriate than this.

[-] Dadifer@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Um, the "Sunshine State"!

[-] TragicNotCute@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Fun fact: calling Oklahoma citizens “Sooners” is actually a historical insult. They won’t take it that way in modern times, but it’s a reference to the fact that during the land rush, they behaved illegally and left to go stake land “too soon”.

Wyoming the equality state?

[-] BilliamBoberts@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

They legalized women's suffrage long before any other state.

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

At least New Jersey isn't malformed here!

It's neighbors though...oof.

And it's a good garden state, love cranberry bogs.

[-] Roldyclark@literature.cafe 2 points 1 month ago

And hammonton blueberries!

[-] Sweetpeaches69@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Lmao at Wyoming being the equality state.

[-] BilliamBoberts@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

They legalized women's suffrage and allowed women to hole public office in 1869, much sooner than any other state or the 19th amendment

[-] Sweetpeaches69@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

That's cool, but ask them how they treat women and brown/black people. I've heard some truly wild shit in Wyoming.

[-] BilliamBoberts@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Listen, I'm not defending the state, just explaining why they they picked the nickname.

[-] aido@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I guess Mexico sank

Amused that the US bookends it's northern border with conifer states.

[-] Bananigans@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

Being from Alabama, TIL it's called the yellowhammer state. Never heard anyone call it that before, but Wikipedia's got their back I guess.

[-] jqubed@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Interesting that both Pennsylvania and Manitoba claim to be the keystone for their respective countries.
