I think e-ink screens just do that, I'm not sure why. I've got an ancient nook somewhere and I remember it flashing a lot when loading a book. At least it's not backlit so it's not a flashing light.

I'm not sure either. If they don't do that you can vaguely see artefacts of the previous rendering. But the ereader that I have does not flash repeatedly. Just once. Maybe it varies based on the exact variety of screen.
