Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Iirc, some nutritionist a while back did an experiment where they ate only potatoes for X number of days and proved that you can survive indefinitely off of only potatoes. You can also bury a piece of a potato and it willl grow into a potato plant. They're basically an infinite food glitch.

potatoes are awesome but you can have a bad harvest

[–] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 50 points 3 days ago (2 children)

or a blight affecting all of your region's potatoes.

I like how this comment has more upvotes than the starting one, a rare occasion

Or heavy metal in the soil.

[–] Militias@lemmy.world 24 points 3 days ago (2 children)

If my memory serves it was over a year, and the only thing he needed was B12 tablets.

I only recall the guy that did it for 60 days but he had to eat 7-8 pounds of potatoes a day to hit minimum protein requirements. His health markers were also very misleading because he went into the experiment as an unhealthy person. His bloodwork showed improvement because he was only eating potatoes rather than junk. Potatoes don't have fat, so you're not getting any essential omegas and along with the B12, there is little to none of: A, D, E, K, B2, B7, selenium, calcium, zinc, and a couple essential aminos

Those deficiencies would lead to muscle wasting, loss of sight, hormone imbalances, weak bones, permanent nerve damage etc.

If you put someone who is in good health on a potato diet for a year, even with B12, they would likely be looking at multiple organ failure by the end of that year

Eggs, cheese, onions, and a bit of cooking oil really complete most of the missing nutrients. Rather cheaply as well

You'll be missing at least 6 essentials with that list. The shortest list with potatoes to hit everything at sustainable levels is potatoes, sardines, eggs, and a leafy green.

Dogs may be goobers but they aren't spuds and not acceptable foodstuffs either way. Regardless of breed. You monster.

I believe potatoes and cheese ultimately provide all the nutrition the body actually requires for average daily modern life.

Like, you can actually be physically healthy and well by eating nothing else.

Mentally speaking the jury is still out regarding the health of a person who chooses to live on nothing but potatoes and cheese, but daily nutritional requirements are absolutely met.

Maybe I DO need to change my diet to potatoes and salted butter. Really makes ya think

[–] SpongyAneurysm@feddit.org 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm thinking about reasoning myself into a poutine diet, right now.

[–] Blan@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

Poutine is the canadian thing with gravy and cheese, right? I really have to search for a recipe or something, because it sounds rather tasty tbh.

Pretty sure that's due to masturbation. Its Victorianian morals that make it necessary to blame superfood for it.

[–] DjangoFett@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm autistic sure, but I also like actual flavor. Potatoes and cheese aren't the tastiest foods by themselves.

[–] BlueOysterCultist@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

Man this comment has me craving some potato soup with cheese

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Definitely need some multivitamins too though.

[–] crank0271@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

A quick search brings up a couple people who have done this (Ireland notwithstanding). I remember this guy doing it, but there are others.

[–] radix@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

In your face, Neil Armstrong!

[–] redballooon@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Wasn't that experiment done on Mars, out of necessity, in a book?

[–] reallykindasorta@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 days ago

Slime Mold Time Mold did a community trial of the potato diet awhile back

Trial

Four weeks

6 Months

You really have to define what “only potatoes” means, because most potato dishes also have a bunch of other ingredients
