Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

In-law cookouts. Not sure what it is about them but it's a bit exhausting talking with so many people and the constant code-switching is tiresome bro
Edit: Thinking more on it, just about any situation where I'm inclined to code switch is tiresome
I miss having a social space where I didn't have to talk in code. I used to have a few, but they got invaded by the upper middle class corporate speech police. So I just quit because it was so miserable to be around people like that.
I remember especially being lectured about saying "I suck at this but I'm always getting better" is 'problematic and negative speech.' God, what awful twats those folks are.
Twats and fools. Sucking at something is the first stage of becoming an expert at it.
I have a very "religious" auntie in law which kinda forces me to perform, and I find it exhausting. I never had to before I got married cause my mom and I are very honest and the rest of my family just has to deal with it/me, but eh, the things we do for love, right? At least my MIL and I are on the same wavelength, or at least enough not to warrant any crazy code switching. 🙏
Code switch?
Code-switching is a linguistic tool. In short you change the way you present speech to better communicate with specific audiences. Easiest example is when you swap from a casual tone that might include slang with your friends to a "professional" or formal tone when talking with your employer.
I've never heard that term before, even though it's pretty much how I've survived as long as I have. I always just called it Chameleon, and I think I must be pretty good at it, because I can see how bad other people are at it.
I worked in sales for 10 years or so, and honestly, I was a shit salesman. (I had a job to do, but I NEVER wanted to pull any shady shit) But, I was good at mimicking the people who were in front of me. I became a bro when the frat boys walked in, I was a polite young man when the church crowd showed up. I grew customers by being whoever they wanted me to be, and just being helpful.
Was going to ask the same thing
