Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

when I was in middle school I racked up over half a YEAR playtime in Minecraft and gave myself carpel tunnel. I only played Minecraft 1.8.9 which was at least 10 versions out of date by that point. I never even made anything I just played on Hypixel.

I did get full superior dragon armor in Hypixel Skyblock by spotting that you could buy a fish for 2 coins but sell it for like 20 coins if you craft it into bait because people are lazy. So I bought and sold millions of fish 2,500 at a time.
I later found that you could just craft dragon armor using shards and sell them on the auction house for about 100k profit and made BANK before other people caught on.

I loved finding those little market loopholes. Sad that nerds eventually caught on and made websites to automate it, and that the game went pay to win. Those were some good times though.

also hot take but dwarvern mines ruined the game. It's "SKYblock" not "infinite land block"

I haven't hyperfixated in a long time, the last three were probably Terraria, Civ V, and Rimworld.

get into dwarf fortress if you can stomach the learning curve. it's like leaving Plato's cave, rimworld is the shadows on a wall

They're both good but the difference is scope, df has a deeper simulation and much bigger scale but rimworld has a lot more character driven stuff.

I'm gonna be honest, the comparison between the two as DF has just better Rimworld has not been correct for a long time. Arguably it was never accurate because Rimworld gives you better control where dwarf fortress is more like a settlement/cuty builder + increased depth to simulation, Z-axis and some RPG mechanics.

If we want to be real Rimworld has plenty of mechanics introduced by DLC (not to mention mods) that just don't and won't ever exist in Dwarf Fortress.

I've got 8000 hours in rimworld and 11000 in dwarf fortress, and a permanent stream at https://watch.unhelpful.observer/

i love both games to death. i keep both running on my idle machines, I'm breeding thrumbo great grandparents and i don't use mods I LOVE rimworld and dwarf fortress, and i think that my Plato's cave comparison holds up better than you think. it's the use of layers of abstraction that allows rimworld to be more than dwarf fortress and to feel like a real game rather than just a simulation, and it's the dedication to reality that allows dwarf fortress to go DEEP DEEP DEEP into specificity, get 30 years in on a second fortress and you have 100% chance encountered a crazy situation that nobody can replicate without cheating

it is almost an insult to call these video games, they are so much more important to me than just games, they are more like independent hobbies

my favorite thing about both games is endgame simulation content. when you've played 200 years and all that's left are great-grandchildren/goblins/elves/archotech elites, and rimworld ideoligions allowing you to create entirely untouched sustainable communities that you can just run forever like an ant farm, to me, this is the definitive simulation experience!
