Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Falling out of an airplane is 1G...
And if you hit the ground, that's pretty much all of it.
So if you hit the ground the G-force spikes. Significantly..
Edit: Thats why F1 drivers for example experience 50+ G during a high speed impact
That's not how physics works.
Because? When you suddenly stop you experience deceleration, the opposite of acceleration. Which is measured in m/s^2 otherwise known as G where one G is 9.81 m/s^2? So if you stop from 29.43 m/s to 0 in 1 second you experience 3 G?..
The fall is 0G as there's nothing providing resistance. Standing on the ground is 1g. The impact is never
The fall is still 1 G. That's why you fall. In space there's 0 G. Thats why you float.
N.B. you can experience 0 G on earth but only when you're pushed up and suddenly let go for a brief moment (swings, airplanes diving or roller coasters for example)
The vomit comet, which simulates 0g, literally flies in parabolic to achieve the effect. Freefall, which is what astronauts experience in low earth orbit, is effectively 0g.
When talking about forces experienced by your body, we are talking about forces that are opposed. When I'm standing on the ground, 1g of force is being applied by gravity and 1g of force is being resisted by the ground. I feel pressure on my feet and my body feels that pressure transmitted though its structure to my brain resting in my skull. When I am in freefall, 1g of force is being applied to my body, with some small portion being resisted by air moving by, unless I'm in a structure blocking the air moving around me, such as the vomit comet. So I experience 0g. Centripetal force on a roller coaster ride can apply more g's, which are counteracted by the structure of the roller coaster causing me to feel pressure. Similarly, slamming into a cliffside at 50 km/h will cause very high g's as my body decelerates from 50 km/h to 0 km/h in a few 10s of centimeters in a time span of less than a second. F=ma or F= 1/2 mv^2^.
Apologies free fall would be. Terminal velocity wouldn't. Then air resistance is in perfect balance with gravity. But then free fall wouldn't be 0 G since air resistance builds up quickly anyway just less than 1 G.
You start at something close to 0g with wind resistance building until you reach terminal velocity, at which point you're at 1g again. But you're right, I should have clarified that in my comment.
