Didn’t watch the presentation. Should I assume that anyone wearing an apple watch from now on is recording my audio without consent?

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I think it’s doing on-device summarization. No transcript is retained or sent off.

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is the correct comment. But the one with the assumption is voted higher. Lemmy loving vibes more than facts, day 1,436.

Yes, the audio is never stored, the summaries can be completely turned off, and yes, Apple again is caught inside its own bubble being ever more disconnected from the outside silicon valley life. They should not have touted this so strongly and loudly.

People will these devices are being kidnapped daily and forced to open their devices. Even without the audio some of these transcripts can be used as evidence against them or their families, violating their 5th amendment rights.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You don't have the facts either though. You are just assuming whatever Apple says is the truth.

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Apple says stuff about Apple product. How is that not a fact?

They said that. They have very little incentive to lie.

[–] derAbsender@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They have the only incentive that matters to lie: Profit.

If they would admit that the Data is send to Servers and or saved, there would be backlash hurting their bottom line.

And they should record and save everything to collect and sell the Data, aiding their bottom line.

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Man, I don’t know. Where I’m coming ‘Profit’ is the exact reason not to do this.

You’re applying redneck town butcher level of business logic to the most successful corporation on the planet, constantly being probed by hackers.

They are so married to this privacy stance that even the hint of that coming out would decimate their userbase.

[–] derAbsender@piefed.social -1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Most normal Data collection is already ignored

Either willfully because it got normalized or not really willfully since "they wouldnt do it because what if it came Out?"

Well... They do it. It is known. But since Apple always was pretty culty the members dont really care and everyone that cares doesnt use Apple, because they know they steal Data and dont believe the pinky promise they wouldnt sell it.

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Look, I like that you’re a crititical thinker. Now read the disclaimer at the bottom:

Privacy Exposure ratings and summaries are AI-generated assessments based on publicly available privacy policies

That’s right, you quoted slop to a cult member!

Health data is not stored, are you mad. That would violate every country’s privacy law other than the USA and China.

[–] derAbsender@piefed.social -1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

AI has the info from somewhere.

And again. They just do it. Not necessarily in the EU. But of course they try to do it on the very edge of legality.

Ok, I’m hopping off here, but

Manik Berry

With a Master’s degree in journalism, Manik writes about big tech and has a keen eye for political-tech news. In his free time, he’s browsing the Kindle store for new stuff read. Manik also adores his motorcycle and is looking for new routes on weekends. He likes tea and cat memes. You can reach him at manik.berry@fossbytes.com

This journalist tells you apple stores health data. Aside from that being very vague (your DOB could possibly be considered a “health data”), he provides no evidence or sources at all, like any decent internet journalist trying to grift of a blog to survive.

The internet will always tell you you’re right, the question is: why would they and how could they benefit from that, when they stand so much to benefit from not doing it, let alone save themselves the hassle of dealing with that data.

Anyway, another day on the internet arguing between two people who absolutely won’t see the other’s viewpoint. What it is to be human.

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

no one said apple doesn't collect any data at all. The fact that your article says apple collects some data relevant to their services, which people choose to use, does not mean they are listening to everything on your device's microphones.

[–] derAbsender@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago

Ah damn it. Forgot the cult stage of "it's okay that they collect it." That comes after "No they dont do it."

And now we are at the "No they dont listen 24/7"

And in about 5 years you are telling others that it is okay that they listen for 24/7.

[–] athatet@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 month ago

Well I think it’s spying on me. Who is right?

[–] h0tbeef@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That’s what I’ll be assuming

I wonder how this will be legally interpreted in states with two-party-consent recording laws

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hell, what about 1 party consent where the person doesn't know their watch is recording?

[–] h0tbeef@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 month ago

Excellent point, lmao

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

It’s a clever idea, although obviously many consumers are nervous about a proliferation of always-listening devices. The feature will be opt-in and obviously, Apple will tout its stringent privacy-preserving implementation compared to the competition. Apple’s version will not actually store audio recordings, nor will it present a transcript of conversations.

[–] Zedd_Prophecy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Let me tell you about apples "stringent" privacy. It means they will hesitate a second before giving the administration anything they ask.

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

how can they do that if the data never leaves your device?

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think it will be functionally different than “recording”. When you talk to Siri or any other voice assistant, does it record your voice or simply transcribe it? This seems to be the latter.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

And Apple has always made a point of saying things like this are on-device, not cloud

[–] setsubyou@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Nothing changed in that regard. It doesn’t record audio, sound recognition runs on device. In the exact same way that all modern Apple devices (watches, phones, earbuds, …) can already listen for Hey Siri, and other brands listen for their wake words etc.

[–] fourish@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

It’s transcribing what you say but not saving your voice.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I believe Apple Watch already ships with always on Siri, but I don’t know anyone who left that turned on.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Jokes on them, my Apple Watch mic hasn’t worked reliably in 2 years!
