Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

There's a ~~truism~~ cliche that, when asked a question to which they don't know the answer, women will say"I don't know" while men will confidently guess.
LLMs are like men on steroids. From time to time they will (by chance) stumble on a correct answer, but mostly they just confidently guess with far less comprehension than even the most stupid man. And yes, I do mean the most stupid man.
Edit: 'truism' was a poor choice of word. I've changed it to cliché.
TIL I'm a woman.
Time to order some socks and install linux
You're welcome!
Ahh yes, sexism is the answer
Perhaps truism was the wrong choice of word. Cliché, perhaps.
Truism? I think not. I have no trouble saying I don't know. To do so is the beginning of all wisdom. Kinda sexist to suggest only women will say that when I just off of the phone with a lady who has never once in all the time I've known her uttered those words.
I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be universal, because universal statements about humans and genders are typically wrong. I think in this case, it's more aiming for the "cliché" meaning of truism.
It's a comment on a trend probably driven by traditional gender roles that cast men as dominant and confident while women are to be deferent and humble. If those roles don't apply to you, the resulting dynamics may not apply either.
Or anyone.
A refusal to acknowledge social trends is actually a very sexist (or homophobic, or racist) position to hold because it is a de facto defense of the status quo.
A person cannot hope to change society for the better while refusing to see society for what it is.
Nah, Some people seem to think if you disagree you have to be blind and must be part of the problem.
You disagree that women are socially pressured into being more apologetic and agreeable?
You may as well tell me an apple doesn't fall when you let it go.
Yeah, poor choice of word on my part.
Yeah, truism wasn't the right word.
Besides, all sweeping generalisms are wrong.
