Contrapoints was my gateway to leftism over a decade ago so there's still a small part of me that wants to have a positive opinion about her.

Why can't she just be a lib and be done with it? Go hang out in the same corner as Bernie, John Oliver, Mark Ruffalo, AOC, play to that audience and be content over there? Dunk on the orange man, retweet Elizabeth Warren, go on the I've Had It podcast, all that liberal progressive stuff. Make one video every two years, keep raking in six figures through patreon and go to brunch with all your lib friends six days a week. Just accept that you're a lib! Being a lib seems fun! Look at the folks at Dropout, they're having a blast over there!

Why does she keep trying to explain herself to the online far-left on the fucking bird site? You sat down with Hillary Clinton, that means you're dead to everyone to the left of Zohran Mamdani. But guess what? That's probably less than 1% of the US population. You don't need to give a shit what we think. There's plenty of left-leaning people who will still have you around. Or at least there would be if you stopped throwing passive-aggressive tantrums.

Literally just go back to brunch. Enjoy your wealth. Go on lib-left podcasts. Go on Hasan's stream. Do campaign events with AOC. Stop trying to justify yourself to fringe online leftists. For your own sake, stop caring what the online tankies think about you.

Why does she keep trying to explain herself to the online far-left on the fucking bird site?

This is a girl who habitually went on 4chan early in her transition to check what the most vicious transmeds had to say about her looks every time she dropped a new video. She coined the term digital self harm specifically to describe her own behavior, she will never touch grass.

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 45 points 2 weeks ago

I think she's just addicted to drama tbh — I enjoyed her videos in the early days but she's always been a massive troll

Because she's not actually one of them. She has Destiny's liberalism but pretends to be on the edge of radical left because that's where her trans advocacy landed her brand initially. She is an ultra liberal. Barely distinguishable from Margaret Thatcher.

Joyce is probably her favourite character in Disco Elysium but for literally all the wrong reasons.

It is because she knows that she has dodged the argument, but she has always lived to argue, and it is mentally devastating to her to be in the wrong, no matter how fringe the opinion is. I remember how she was pre-transition, back in the edgy atheist days, and she could argue circles around the theists, and had an unending appetite for debate with them and their cohort, no matter how obscure they were, particularly young earth creationists. And she got to be correct and rhetorically dominate them because, tbf they are literally the lowest rung on the totem pole in terms of American hegemony.

However, she cannot do the same to the far left, and it has been absolutely devastating to her mentally, as far as I can tell. We are a tiny minority with fringe beliefs, but we can argue absolute circles around her and she believes she is right, is convinced she is right, but cannot prove she is right. And that makes her the Young Earth Creationist. So she can only take refuge in satire, which is the loser's defense.

Edit: Also, it not less than 1%, it is closer to like 1.5% maybe 2%.

This feels deeply correct to me.

I will say it probably shouldn't, but I watched Contrapoints for an extremely long time, though she was never a favorite of mine. Extremely influential, sure, but I always thought she kinda reminincent of the BrowsHeldHigh guy or Hbomberguy, just with a more female affectation, but it was all very similar content at a similar time.

I was always more of a fan of the ThatGuyWithTheGlasses content growing up, which is kinda embarrassing to say now, but I still think they were doing the large amounts of theatre in your criticism thing at a way higher level early on in the online space. It was fun stuff, and it was cool to see Contra put on that level of performance, but that doesn't mean I found her actual insights on the nature of the political economy to be all that, well, insightful. Her trans stuff was extremely influential to introducing me to the trans space, and I cannot say she hasn't been extremely influenctial there. For better or for worse lol.

[–] Sneakytrickyyy@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It was mainly for the worse, introducing a young and impressionable audiance the the wonders of transmedicalism is not, like people say, cool.

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

I am happy that I never really picked up on those particular flavors, just that I always noticed that she had infinite sympathy and patience for conservatives and their literature, but none for the left, and her personal tweets were always extremely distasteful.

[–] Sneakytrickyyy@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

Dead on, you put it so well

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Edit: Also, it not less than 1%, it is closer to like 1.5% maybe 2%.

Do you have a source for that number or is it just a guess? Because I pulled that number out of my ass I'll be honest

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It's a guess based on the amount of people that I have talked to and general protest numbers/numbers that leftist videos and things tend to do, as well as the general recent polling around democratic socialists, that, even when it is positive to them, tends to skew everyone further to the right than they actually are politically because leftist tendencies are not even really recognized.

I'm not going to pretend that it is an ideologically coherent 1.5 to 2%, nor organized, but there are so many people independently coming to these kinds of conclusions because the evidence simply leads them there, it is just that there is extremely little that is actionable that they can do with that information. There are a lot of people out there waiting for a serious leftist direction, but I have no idea how exactly that forms into a coherent and cohesive political movement. But like, 6 million people across the U.S. yeah, absolutely. It is probably more than it has ever been historically, it is just paradoxically also politically weaker than it has ever been.

[–] thefunkycomitatus@hexbear.net 29 points 2 weeks ago

She can be financially successful without us but she can't be authentically "leftist" without us. Her identity as a real leftist, and therefore good person, who is doing enough to save the world, relies on acceptance into this club. She can't buy her way in with patreon dollars. All she can do is argue, plead, and cajole. She could, as you said, find acceptance in the libs but she doesn't value their acceptance the way she values ours.

[–] Sneakytrickyyy@hexbear.net 28 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Kill that last bit of hope you have for her, the lines have been drawn, she chooses to be a pariah, everyone wanted desperately for her to improve and change her ways but at every given turn she decided to lash out and walk all over people.

Liberals are just as harmful as conservatives, they are the same thing more or less.

Oh and also, she just wants attention, gotta keep the money rolling in.

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 21 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

If you like the left and yourself so much, go be a lib and then have the fat guy from cumtown host a leftist roast of Contrapoints. Everybody will eat it up like hot cakes. A win win win if I've ever seen it.

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

he has a name(and a better body positivity position than some here)

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

One time I saw a meme where they referred to Stavvy as the fat fuck from cumtown as a reaction to the podcast ending and I laughed until I cried.

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

One time I commented referencing 'the Adams d*** is small dancers' and got banned for a week

I just wanted to circle back. I wouldn't call him that if it wasn't integral to the character he portrays himself as. He's not lesser or diminished because he's fat.

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 19 points 2 weeks ago

She doesn't want fun, she wants to endlessly critique fun

[–] Arahnya@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago

its funny but she actually just fits into the canon of quirky people from [city she lives in] like some sorta [famous old guy who makes edgy movies] adjacent character, totally immersed in the drama.

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Isn't that what she did? When she was on Bad Faith a while back and Brie forced her to actually describe herself, she said she was a "left-leaning liberal"

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

But the point is she still feels the need to defend herself to the far-left. She still wants our approval for some reason.
