I grew up in a place with a lot of libertarian ideas. Getting a real job undoes a lot.
That may even have just happened. This kid is in college talking about federal policy, international affairs or political law ……. But he’s spent this whole summer out of state as a camp counselor for children in need and is wondering if there is a major for “camp administration “. Leaning a little different is just an implication but it is implied
He gets back in a week and we’ll have a little time before he goes back to school so we’ll see
I found my counselor/advisors mostly worthless when I was in college but that's actually a good question for them.
There's plenty of degrees that would be useful for looking for long term jobs in that kind of industry and work environment. I imagine like anything education related (except scummy admin) in the USA it pays shitty but pay isn't the only part of living.
Just sucks that the capitalist hellscape makes it even more important to have money to do anything and is a huge quality of life limiter if you're doing important but underpaid work. Society is broke.
For real. I was not walking around with a libertarian chip on my shoulder. I had moved away from it, but seeing real jobs really changed that. My "public" jobs at the university had me reporting and recording a lot of what I did. Keeping track of grant money was a pretty serious deal. Having a job later in the private sector you can slack off a lot more. Pretty much every lazy government worker stereotype was there and kind of magnified. Every now and then I notice something else that is in conflict with the idea that unregulated capitalism is a good ideal.
Same thing happened to me. When you finally have to face life living as an adult, reality hits you right in the face.
Sorta. You could also say the system.
Plenty of people get a job and flip their perspective on taxes. Some go "man shit is expensive we really should use our tax dollars to help people who can't afford it" while others go "man shit is expensive, if only I didn't have to pay stupid taxes"
Which both are fair especially when tax dollars aren't spent on its citizens and instead spent to blow up brown kids and hospitals. Really comes down to education I think
