But not too black (lemmy.world)

The Democrats have now had two black presidential candidates (one who became president, and one who didn't), both of whom had fairly exotic backgrounds.

We had:

Barack Obama, who had a Kenyan father, and was raised by his white American mother, in Indonesia.

Kamala Harris, who had a Jamaican father, and was raised by her Indian-American mother, in Canada.

Notably, neither of them had African-American parents, and both spent much of their formative years outside of America.

I've been wondering for a while if there was any significance to this coincidence, and now I've realized what it is.

Because of their backgrounds, neither Obama nor Harris speak with any trace of African-American dialect or accent. I think that's what Democrats are after.

The Democrats are averse to African-American dialects and accents. They want a black person who sounds "white".

Would an African-American person who grew up in an African-American speech community ever have a chance of being the Democrats' presidential candidate?

Summary

Historians suggest Democrats might have fared better against Donald Trump by embracing the economic issues championed by Senator Bernie Sanders, who has long pushed for a focus on “bread-and-butter” concerns for working-class voters.

Despite Kamala Harris’s progressive policies, polls showed Trump was favored on economic issues, particularly among working-class and Hispanic voters.

Historian Leah Wright Rigueur argued that Sanders’ messaging on economic struggles could be key for future Democratic strategies.

Sanders himself criticized the party for “abandoning” the working class, which he said has led to a loss of support across racial lines.

All of these unions endorsed Harris. In the wake of Trump’s victory last night, here’s what they’re saying about how they’ll move forward.

Do you think it would be possible (and how could we get it done?) to unite millions of people who collectively agree to target an individual company for a short time unless the company meets our demands? For example, for the month of March we all pledge to not purchase anything from Apple unless Apple does XYZ... Either they do it, or we tank their stock... Move on to the next company target

Everywhere you look, in all countries, there’s a burning hatred of the rich and powerful: the bankers, Wall Street, and the establishment in general. This hatred was cleverly exploited by Donald Trump. And this has appalled the serious representatives of capital.

Armed with a better understanding of government, Trump is expected to pursue a bigger agenda, faster than he did in his first term.

To win working-class voters — and possibly today’s election — Democrats need to attack economic elites. But the Kamala Harris campaign hasn’t consistently offered an anti-elite counter to Donald Trump’s right-wing populism.

Another note that New York is currently even weirder having only allowed same day voter registration on a single day of early voting rather than the entire period unlike North Carolina
