I used to hate tomatoes

Then I learned that they could be good with a little salt and pepper

Now i've made panzanella salad and it's like, where have you been all my life?

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 1 week ago (3 children)

my theory is that kids that dont like veggies is because their parents didnt season their vegetables.

Very much the case in my house. The only "salad" that was eaten in my home growing up was this unholy mix of sliced raw onion, cubed tomatoes, SO MUCH WHITE VINEGAR and some salt. I wouldn't go near it.

Turns out I like salads when they have a bit of oil or dressing or other things.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago

That or they just boil them

The idea that putting anything on a vegetable or cooking it in a fashion that changes its appearance somehow robs the food of its healthy qualities has done irreparable harm to healthy eating habits

Pretty true in my case, veggies were either the frozen mixed veggie blend (disgusting, especially the carrots), boiled, or just prepared in a way that made them unappetizing. No shade to my parents, it's tough to cook for a family, but when we all learned to prepare veggies properly I found out I actually like broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc

I do still hate cooked carrots & I stand by that, I've tried plenty of methods & I haven't found one I like. But I'm fine with that

Booboo my mom insisted on only ever steaming veggies. No wonder kids hate broccoli. Ducking pan sear that shit and season it!

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 3 points 6 days ago

Honestly steamed broccoli is the shit, I liked it even when I was young.

There was a brief period in my youth where my mother would just buy a shitload of cherry tomatoes. No idea why. School lunch? Yeah there's a bunch of cherry tomatoes. Feeling peckish? Cherry tomatoes. Breakfast? For some reason, cherry tomatoes.

Lasted 2 months then she never bought them again.

Caprese salad (if you aren't vegan)

[–] Hestia@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I recently made this discovery myself. Turns out, if you add flavor to them, they're not bad.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago

Also, heirloom tomatoes have a wonderful flavor!

[–] BGDelirium@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I still hate tomatoes and you'll never convince me otherwise

Something in the aroma just reads like rot to me and no amount of cooking helps. A healthy tomato plant still in the ground smells like yard waste and so does your grandma's marinara that she simmers for eight hours. But then I don't like ketchup either. Some vinegar is fine but even a little ketchup drowns out everything else.

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

tomato plants smell fucking weird for sure but it comes from the vine, not the fruit. something's gone very wrong if that smell is getting into your pasta sauce

[–] robotElder2@hexbear.net 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Then there's been something very wrong with every tomato I've ever encountered.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago

Sorry, I don't mean for this to sound like a clapback or an insult or something, but could it be something to do with your nose? Are there any other common foods that smell really bad to you but fine to everyone else?

[–] fox@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Tomatoes are made to be robust and to ripen extremely slowly while reddening quickly. You get a fruit that's really firm and tasteless because it's pulled off the vine too soon, but it ships well so stores don't give a fuck. This is why canned tomatoes have a stronger flavor and are recommended more often for sauces etc, because they're cultivars bred for flavor, not structure, harvested at maximum ripeness, and locked there by canning. If you don't fuck with tomatoes because they're mid as hell, a can of San Marzanos on a pizza could change your mind.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

the texture and wetness of a tomato slice are pretty of-putting but apparently most people don't give a shit about texture

[–] starik@lemmy.today 3 points 6 days ago

They’re used in sandwiches for their wetness/texture

[–] Are_Euclidding_Me@hexbear.net 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I very much give a shit about texture and have strong opinions about which textures I absolutely will not eat.

A tomato slice on a sandwich rules! That's a great texture!

People can have different preferences to you and it doesn't mean they're thoughtless.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 1 points 6 days ago

it's not just tomatoes that makes me think that. it's usually only autistic people and food dorks who give a second thought to texture

Until you have a fresh San Marzano or some kind of heirloom chopped up with a bit of salad, olive oil and parsley on toaster bread, and suddenly your life is transformed forever.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I've always been okay on tomatoes. Found out I fucking love a tomato if it's a good tomato. Home garden is best but it is one of the veggies that is worth paying for the better version. A lot of stuff it doesnt make a difference if you get the expensive organic version, onions is onions for example. Tomatoes are a strong exception. Low quality tomatoes are for salsa and lesser sandwiches. Good tomatoes are for eating raw and really good sandwiches where you buy nice bread

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yep

A nice tomato sandwich on a hot day is :chefs-kiss:

Toasted bread, lmayo and a single slice of a flavorful and meaty tomato is as close to heaven as I can get in the summer

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

Blast a bit of flaky salt, some herbs de province and white pepper on a fine heirloom tomato. Or throw that fucker on an everything bagel with either just some garlic oil or vegan cream cheese and fresh greens....madone
