never did say anything about them erasing their culture, but when you're in the west where it's primarily recognized as a hate symbol you could exercise critical thinking.

It's sure dumb, but imagine some idiot knowing about German history but not about Buddhism. I'd take such an idiot vandalize the Buddha accidentally over any idiot thinking "Nice swastika bro".
