Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Different reasons, I asume. Here are my 3 favourites:
Attention seeking through rage bait. They want attention be it possitive or negative, the easiest is to be negative and to be a troll. Way too many people fall for it and give them their vanity when responding to them. Thus, remember never feed the troll.
Negative emotions are way more intense than possitive emotions and in social media most of the time they are pushed harder as more people interact with negative content. That can lead for younger people to feel like they need to be more negative than they should.
They are struggling themselves and don't have help and don't know they are struggling or know they are and just want others to struggle to.
Disclaimer, I'm not a psychologist, but these are my assumptions.
I'd also throw in the anonymity aspect as well.
Rage also fosters engagement. There’s likely corporate financed ragers out there for engagement purposes. Just like brand defenders/promoters.
While I don't think this applies to many of the people being described here, I also feel like those of us who don't really use much social media other than to reach out on public platforms to complain to companies could appear to be a bundle of pure negativity.
i much prefer doing positive attention baiting. on tiktok especially i like going to small artists' channels and saying nice things about their art (that i do mean), they reply quite often :)
sometimes i even get an amazing treat in return! - more art! not always, but sometimes, i notice artists posting more after i visit their channel a few times. It really makes me feel this comfortable warmth in my chest
I refer to it as "sowing karma". I don't believe actual karma exists. However, a small positive act can create an avalanche of other, small positive acts.
Whenever I do someone a favour, particularly random people. If they try or offer to pay me back, I tell them to pay it forward. I've no idea how many do, but even if it's just 1 or 2, then the world is that bit better for all of us.
Keep being awesome!
That is karma. You create more good in the world by small acts of kindness, and it spreads. The same way that bad karma spreads. It's commonly confused that karma is a magic thing where you get rewarded for kindness, but usually it's only indirectly if ever
Karma is generally associated with some form of personal scoreboard. E.g. if you have bad luck it's either because you did something bad, or a "due" your share of good luck.
Karma is a lie, but it's a useful lie (like truth or mercy) I explicitly know that my good deeds won't get rewarded I do it because it can help make the world a better place. If I'm lucky, that will loop around to help me down the road, but I don't expect it.
Understood. I was just letting you know that you were actually more in line with the original concept of karma, from Buddhist and Hindu religious beliefs, which has nothing to do with a personal scoreboard or rewards.
The way you misspell "positive" is causing me to have some negative reactions to you
