Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

So like, do something about it maybe?
Really quick, list what you think civilized, nonmilitary, individual folks with families should do against a 50 year systemic plan, funded with trillions and led by literal psychopaths fixed on destabilizing democracy to rebuild a fascist autocracy in their own image? Every day is a real internal struggle of what to do next. Many of us have spent decades opposing in every way typical folks can, bleeding, arrest, life threatening opposition face to face with swat teams as unarmed, untrained every day people.
Your response is not helpful. It trivializes one of the largest issues in the history of civilation with no clear solution ahead.
The point of my response is that WE are not opposed, so don't try to make the good folks into opponents. Grow up, see the bigger picture and support. Offer solutions and plan on what your personal line will be when this all finds it's way to you.
A national peaceful shutdown.
Unfortunately you’ve already prefaced the standard excuse, one which wouldn’t exist had enough people gone out to vote when needed. Any argument against that is disproven by the results Republican voters get in all elections around the country and what Mamdani did in its biggest city.
They’re not trivialising any response at all…the fact is, it’s American citizens that have to do something about it, one way or the other. The easiest solution is to vote. The next easiest now is peaceful shutdown.
There’s two solutions. They’ve dropped the ball on one, repeatedly. Now it’s time for the other. It’s not our job to help either; they elected him democratically, we can’t and they told us to keep our nose out of it before 2016.
Sooner or later the good folks need to unite, step up and do something. Yes, it’ll involve hardship, for many. Yes, it’s easy for us to say but we’d do something about this if and when it comes to us. This is why voting is important. But we are under no obligation to separate good Americans from bad ones in this…it’s a collective responsibility as far as outsiders are concerned.
We have grown up…it’s the US that needs to grow up and their people take their national duty seriously. As a collective.
It’s already finding our way to us, thanks to the US. They’re already inundating us with their incessant political garbage, brought to us by their conservative PACs. I note Americans are quick to call that our problem as well, on top of asking for asylum.
All this is why we are sick to death of them and their shit.
The US has utilized systemic racism to train it's population from childhood to hate and fear each other. We aren't able to work together because we have been programmed not to.
So, how would I organize a general strike with fascists who believe the current process is great, or are in such a compromised position (by design) that striking could literally kill them?
Your advice is like telling someone who is homeless to get a job.
Based on your argument, it's not your job to do anything. Agreed. Hate and don't support the US... That might help change opinions. If you want us to continue to resist... Yeah, plenty of people do and have. But telling people to essentially kill themselves because "it's the right thing to do" is kinda some bullshit. About 40% of our nations population are hateful fascists. This is an issue that has built up over generations. Its going to take a lot more thank just trying to organize a general strike to fix it.
All the advice, if that’s what you want to call it, I gave you is entirely doable by one individual. I didn’t ask you to organise, I said ‘link up’. If I can see some people around here doing that, which I have in some of the political and world subs, I’m sure you can find it.
At no stage have I told you to kill yourself; all that is your extension on your own comments.
Well, that or pure luck through somehow getting another fair election are your two routes out. The options have run out. You either unprogram yourselves and get together to do it, get that chance at voting it out again or you go down. But at no stage have I suggested you go kill yourself nor did I put the option of civil war and the 2nd Amendment on the table (which btw we got hammered about by you lot as your way out if it ever happened).
Idk. It just seems like you’ve got excuses for everything that could possibly be a solution. Ones you don’t offer other countries, especially those you decide to attack militarily.
Edit: when I say ‘link up’, I said this to another commenter, not you. I told them as an American, I’d vote everything I could, write to friendly reps to encourage them to organise, attend protests and link up with like minded people that want to act. They’re around and some of know the protests are happening. Those protests are a start and they are a good thing; from little things, big things grow.
Just so there’s no confusion on my post.
Lol the "WhY aReN't ThEy dOinG aNyThInG tO StOp It" people never, ever have an answer to a reasoned response like this.
They also never notice the identical moves being made in their own governments. Like the afd in Germany of all places.
No, those people never have an answer to when it's them that should be doing something.
Go to any thread about Ukraine, it's why aren't Russians doing anything to stop it. Same with Israel, same with Mexico (why are they leaving instead of fixing their country?), etc.
In this particular case the US is about to become the center of the new bad guys of WW3, and Americans are, in fact, not doing enough to stop it.
Whatever you though the Germans should have done to the Nazis pre-WWII. Whatever you think the Russians should do to Putin. Whatever you think Israelis should do with Netanyahu.
My grandpa fought in WWII. He never asked the Germans if they supported Hitler, though. He just dropped rocket artillery on them from a few km away.
Was the punishment of Germany for WWI not at all relevant. Not the refusal of most other nations to take in Jews when Germany tried to ship them away not relevant either?
If you were to ask me it, I would have suggested to not abjectly punish an entire nation for the actions of aristocrats and not close international boarders to refugees due to discrimination against a minority group as factors that outside nations can do.
Alternatively, Germany did need... outside intervention...
For the purposes of my point, the Treaty of Versailles and the refusal to accept refugees is irrelevant. Both examples are approaching a Heckler's Veto, but kind of in reverse?
My point is more realpolitik: we can't expect people to distinguish between the good americans and the bad americans in a situation where the US is hostile to the world. Honestly, I think it's a bit late to fix that.
I also don't really have any good solutions. Roughly 30% of any given population will always be susceptible to fascism, that's been studied. That will always be with us. There are also strategies to prevent full fascism, but those need to be carried out consistently on a societal level.
Whatever helps you sleep at night I guess.
Curious, what would you recommend the Americans do?
A general strike. Actually disruptive protest that hits supply lines or commerce. Actual resistance actions that people in oppressive governments elsewhere have employed.
I said "Fuck it" and left. Took a 75% pay cut and left everything behind. The system dies when people abandon it.
No regrets.
Most folks don't have your privilege and are trapped in that shitty fucking hell hole. It's great that you made it out but the majority of those who are suffering have no such option.
dO sOmEtHiNg
WhErE aRe ThE sEcOnD aMeNdMeNt PeOpLe!!?one
It's fucking up your world too, and you're a border away. We're not for the same reason you're not.
Thats the dumbest argument Ive seen in a while. Its your country, not mine. Canada is not doing enough but at least we're trying to economically distance ourselves. Its not our job to fix your shit. Thats some victim blaming shit right there.
You guys on the other hand are just letting your government trample on you.
As per my point, this is why Canadians dont respect Americans. You guys complain and do nothing.
Also the fact that you immediately go to 'we cant shoot them so what do you want us to do?' is the most American dumbfuck response.
Yeah they’re lashing out.
They want someone, anyone, other than themselves taking care of it so they can Netflix and chill. That’s why straight up, they refer to the problems their PACs are bringing to our countries, and what we are doing about that.
These are people who think electing Trump should qualify them asylum in other countries and they get very nasty when that is argued down.
They will avoid whatever responsibility they can and push that onto others.
Yeah let me go get myself shot and leave my family with no means of support because some armchair badass on the internet said I'm chicken and they totally would have kicked Trump's ass if it had happened there
Sooner or later they will have to do something as a collective or some will just get dragged out of their own homes and shot anyway. Isn’t that actually happening?
Never once did I say you were a chicken so stop making shit up and stop making it about one person.
What I would be doing if I was American would be voting every single election I could, participating in any protests I can, writing to the progressive reps who are the only ones likely to listen and linking up with like any minded people at the protests and elsewhere that I can. That’s what you can do and if enough did, you’d probably have enough to pull off a national shutdown. There’s people out there trying to string something together and you can find them if you look.
Here’s some facts on it though: they elected Trump (twice) democratically, so we can’t help. They told us to mind our own business across several platforms before 2016, now they expect us not just to help out or even take care of the entire thing, but to welcome them with open arms in asylum from…an elected government. The increased problems with right wing lunacy we’re suffering are brought to us and financially backed by their political scene. They are where they are because of years of neglecting the vote and that includes institutionalising the oppressive systems they now deal with. They cannot use the 2nd Amendment, the thing they used to remind us for years how oppressed we were when they weren’t, to get out of it. The excuses they expect us to accept for it, they don’t offer other nations. They, like Churchill said, will take every other option but the correct one until they’re left with no option.
You got no alternative anyway outside of pure luck. You’ll either have to or there’ll be authorities dragging you out of your houses anyway. We’ve seen how it ends. The sooner you all get together and do it the easier it’ll be.
I've done all of the things that you said you would be doing, as have many of us (many more than voted for Trump). Our election system is broken. Not seeming to understand that comes off as victim-blaming. That's why we're defensive about the "dO sOmEtHiNg" posts. WE FUCKING DID.
Well the system was stable enough to put Biden in (on 68% turnout) so something must work. That’s the issue; there’s evidence from that, the Republicans, several state reps now, Mamdani, which is a broad cross section of recently elected, that claim doesn’t necessarily stand and when it’s raised, we’re told we don’t understand. It counters the broken system claim, on inspection.
I don’t think the protest numbers match the turnout for Trump either. I know there were protests and I know they were big but that’s around 70 million who voted for Trump wasn’t it? Maybe. I’d want a source on that though.
Either way you’re going to have to keep doing them, get lucky with a vote or go down. As we will if it comes to us. This has been going on a long time. They were repeatedly warned for years, were given a trial run, the react vote on the first run was the highest turnout they had, proving turning out works.
Why are the rest of us expected to accept this? We wouldn’t get the excuses accepted. I get a bit tired of this ‘don’t understand’ line.
Because you clearly don't. The NYC mayoral election and state rep races are not decided by the national electoral college. If you're tired of being told you don't understand, stop loudly misunderstanding so much.
It's kind of like how Canada has systematically killed indigenous people. I'm sure plenty of people don't/didn't like it, but it still happens through systematic neglect and violence of that group. The US was able to utilize systematically racism to a much broader scale, and is now using it to push through fascism.
I mean, California lost gun rights under a conservative government that wanted to disarm blacks. But the country still thinks that liberals made it happen... Somehow...
Regardless, it is our country, it is our problem, but it will fuck us all. So any useful advice would be appreciated, rather than just try harder.
Except when people give advice the answer is usually one of the following:
That wont work in America because America is different™.
You dont understand, people are struggling to make ends meet so it isnt practical.
The truth is Americans have never been interested in advice from others and sure arent now. You need to act. Literally anything is better than whats happened so far.
The bottom line is this. If you arent willing to make sacrifices to keep your freedom, you better start accepting your overlords. This has been true throughout human history and will be true for Americans.
