Ryan Grim of Drop Site News has been intolerable on this.

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 23 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (3 children)

Ryan Grim has been a bad take machine lately. What is with these journalists that start out with good positions always devolving into chuddery and crankery? Taibi, Blumenthal, Grim, etc.

There seems to be a type. Why is it so rare to find any principled journalist in the alt journalism western world? Only ones I can think of in the "alt" sphere that haven't embarrassed themselves are Richard Medhurst (admirable for standing up against legal pressure and trumped up terrorism charges from 2 countries) and Ben Norton. I guess that's your answer right there, if you stick to your guns and say the truth no matter what they law cracks down on you or you get kicked to the curb from your job.

I genuinely think they give themselves brainworms by being on twitter all day long

Greenwald is another one. You are right, it's just pure contrarianism and eventually reaction.

[–] Fossifoo@hexbear.net 7 points 5 days ago

I remember him having some incredibly unhinged takes. During Snowden and WikiLeaks he sure was a plank but I feel he lost too much money to not pander to weird right wing grifters.

You get to have one good shot against the establishment - ONE.

Then they turn you or burn you.

It's the absence of historical materialism

[–] HamManBad@hexbear.net 22 points 6 days ago

The problem with Ryan is that apparently he knew Platner from when he was a bartender in DC. We should know from Bernie 2020 how much being "good friends" with someone can warp your judgement

Everyone on the majority report as well

Sanders is the one who comes out of looking this most like a chump I think. He very vocally protected him on the nazi tattoo issue, using his jewishness as a shield. They are very closely tied together in the public consciousness of anybody that knows about Platner.

[–] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 15 points 6 days ago

Post heart attack Sanders just swallowing L's like heart medicine.

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 23 points 6 days ago (3 children)

This is a massive L for Hasan and he's gotta own up to it but when were the chapo boys doing anything to support this piece of shit or his campaign?

All they've done is make fun of what a weird chud this guy is, they were literally calling him a "wokeremoved" even before this came out due to his reddit comments about how he fantasized about SAing a hypothetical burglar who broke into his home and how he explained in said comments that he isn't gay becauseremoved is about power

Maybe it wasn't the most principled leftist criticism of this war criminal piece of shit but it sure as hell wasn't an endorsement

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 24 points 6 days ago (1 children)

when were the chapo boys doing anything to support this piece of shit or his campaign?

Will endorsed him. Iirc Felix said getting a nazi tattoo is disqualifying. Because either you're a nazi or you're not smart enough to hold office.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 24 points 6 days ago

Rare display of common sense by Felix

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

CTH downplayed criticism of him being a blackwater merc and having a nazi tattoo, they definitely had a "I don't give a shit about these issues and neither should you, hold the line and vote progressive" subtext

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 12 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I recall Felix saying he didn't think the guy was actually a Nazi, just a dumbass, based on his reddit posting history, and Matt saying that nobody would give a shit about his dumb sexting habit if he wasn't critical of Israel. But they also say "the book Settlers was basically written for this guy" in reference to him bringing up his tour with the Marines in a debate. I don't recall if any of them every actually endorsed voting for him.

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Will Menaker endorsed voting for him explicitly. He's obviously a nazi, he had a croat nazi tattoo from a parlor that was full of SS bolts and swastikas (I know what croat tattoo parlors are like that offer totenkompfs to US Marines). That's on top of him volunteering for private mercenary groups. Felix should know better than to downplay this shit.

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I think Felix's comment was a while ago when this info was still new and we didn't know all the other bullshit about the dude.

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

we knew he was a blackwater merc.

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 2 points 6 days ago

I didn't till like a week after the nazi tattoo thing came out. Hadn't even heard of him before that.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

saying he didn't think the guy was actually a Nazi, just a dumbass

I've just been posting this everywhere:

From Mein Kampf vol. 2, Chapter VII: The Struggle with the Red Front

Never give nazis the benefit of the doubt. They say the wrong things on purpose. The nazis of today have disciplined themselves to "hide your power level." Maybe some dumbass gets caught in the crossfire, not realizing what fascists do to infiltrate enemy organizations. But that's exactly what a nazi would say to avoid getting punched in the face. Too fucking bad if you got the wrong tattoo by mistake.

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 11 points 6 days ago

To be clear I never defended the guy. I had no idea who he was till the Nazi tattoo thing came out, and I was maybe inclined to give some slight benefit of the doubt then because of his anti-Zionism but the second I learned he was in Blackwater I quickly dropped that.

[–] trompete@hexbear.net 14 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Will said "If I lived in Maine I would still vote for him."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMZkm7qi3OI

I can imagine if someone wanted to hear what they want to hear, they might point out that they're shitting on him plenty. But if you listen to this critically, you will notice it's mostly excuses. They seem completely unbothered by that guy's platform, saying it is they're "cool with it", despite Platner's platform being liberal Hitler.
