I think the reason France gets such a piss poor reputation (politics aside) is that Parisians tend to be stuck up. The rest of the country is quite nice.

I think the reason is that Paris for many years literally smelt like piss. It may still smell like piss but I don't know anyone who has been in years.

It still smells like piss at least in some parts according to a family member who was there last year

I go to France a fair bit but I’m never like “I want to go to Paris this time”

My SO wants to visit France some day, what are some places we should go instead of Paris? We want to see nice museums and visit pretty places. She loved Barcelona, if that helps.

Bordeaux is pretty good for that kind of thing

Mont Saint Michel is France's second-largest tourist attraction outside of Paris. Is it a tourist trap? Yes, absolutely, but it is still absolutely worth the visit. When we visited logistics were well-managed, the commercial eyesores on the shore were kept away from view and admittance to the monastery, the main attraction, was not as overpriced as you would have expected.

It is a very special place. If you have ever been into fantasy media, medievalism or even Disney movies you're going to have a good time here.

I'd say either Toulouse for pink buildings or Bordeaux for white buildings
