Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I wish people would be at least a little more normal. It's a bit weird when you join Lemmy and the front page is full of furries, femcels and other niches you never heard of.

But I get it. There aren't many other places left for unusual people. So I guess you better get used to it.

Better than nazis.

Unlike Reddit, Lemmy makes no attempt to spoon feed and algorithmically tailor to what it believes will garner the largest audience.

You have to do a little curating here. Block users, communities, and even whole servers that you're not interested in and suddenly the whole experience changes.

I very very rarely block users or servers because I don't want to put myself into an echo chamber, but I have a long list of communities blocked because I have no interest in them whatsoever. There could be anime girls posted every 10 seconds with thousands of upvotes for all I know, but I've blocked them because I don't care. They can continue having fun in their community, I can be blissfully unaware of it. Win win.

Make the threadiverse your own and it's far more enjoyable than everything all at once.

Not sure why you have that much of it. My frontpage (not subscriptions) is mostly meme, open source news, and political stuff. I don't see furries often.

Depends on the server you sign up for. We're on a furry server and the entire local feed is just furry stuff (mostly art posts).

I feel there's more unusual people than nahh, but nobody talks about (due to risk of presenting as abnormal). But if you can set aside the fear of being ostracized... everyone is pretty strange in their own ways. Show me a "normal" person, and I'll show you someone who's still learning. Appreciate you as you are though, we're all out here learning <3

I’ve never met a normal person in my life. Errbody be crazy in their own ways. I say this as a very average-looking dude.

[–] Tonava@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

I've met plenty of normos! The people who will give you a blank stare, if you tell them stuff like lobsters don't need to be boiled alive, you have to just kill them right before boiling, which is pretty easy since you need to just do a sharp cut on the right place on their head

[–] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm a little weird, but my front page has none of that. Am I doing lemmy wrong?

[–] BeatL@pawb.social 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You can do an easy test. Use a sentence like "windows is the obviously the best operating system, they integrate AI so well"

If you have no answer, not a single downvote you are doing lemmy wrong xD

Jokes asides welcome to you and others in a collection of places where freedom and community truly mean something. UwU

let me try:

Apple make the best hardware, nothing can compare to my M2 and it's under-sized ssd. The fact that I can have such good hardware and still have a full Unix system is unbeatable.

Will that work?

I use Debian (mostly) btw

[–] MrShankles@reddthat.com 3 points 1 week ago

Nice try buddy, but you're wrong about that. Sorry to have to be the one to tell you, just how wrong you are about that... but you are wrong. I dunno about what exactly, but I do know I'm right and you're wrong /s

Glad to have ya around friend <3

[–] gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago

what else would you prefer in your feed?

all interesting content is, by definition, weird

[–] oce@jlai.lu 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Those are quite ok, the main boogeyman is the tankies.

[–] Tonava@sopuli.xyz 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I know many of them complain about the term "tankie", but I doubt they'd prefer "the people and bots spreading russian and chinese propaganda" over it

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I would, but even more, id prefer that you stay on topic instead of just resorting to ad hominem. if they say something untrue, show them to be lying.

[–] Tonava@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can't really ad hominem when it's not an argument in the first place. I'm insulting tankies

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

it's not a logical argument, no. it is a rhetorical argument, though. and it's bad faith.

[–] Tonava@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh for sure it's in bad faith, it pisses me off to see stuff like people defending China genociding tibetans

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

so call that out when it happens, but I've never seen that.

[–] Tonava@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago

Good you haven't! Everyone is better off not reading the discussions were they spout stuff like defending gulags since those "only killed few million people". I do try to call them out when I see it, but these days I just mostly insult them when I can, so I can block whoever gets triggered and reveals themselves. I owe them nothing and they won't get anything fruitful out of me since I'm not engaging in a way that allows them to spout even more propaganda, so it's win-win for all. Also I get to insult tankies

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 1 points 1 week ago

I don't see much of either in my feed, though I already heard about them. Curious now, which other niche stuff you see lots around here?
