This especially speaks to me today as I was banging my head against the wall all day with the problem that google gemini was not solving. When critics of ai say these things are parrots, they are absolutely correct. You can see how the language models take your inputted text, rearrange them a bit, then spit them back out asking if you want more, always angling for your engagement. At least grok is honest when it just searches the web for you, that's what these things do, glorified text aggregators scraping reddit or youtube for asnwers. To trust these things like an expert is going to get a lot of people hurt.
I'm disgusted with the media. It has been a blizzard of a hype/pr machine promoting the fucking thing instead of the media doing its unglamourous, boring yet badly needed job of informing the public that AI is not sentient and not intelligent.
And like it's not even hard to explain this to the public either! I'm a tech dummy and even I can see how these things operate and what they can and can't do. So like you said, the msm is just paid propaganda as a hype man for agi instead of being like "actually no, dipshit, gemini isn't your girlfriend".
I had to tell a friend that it is just an ass-kissing machine and they had never heard anything like that before, but immediately understood what these things are all about and what their appeal is. It really isn't hard to explain to people at all. The media hypes this shit up as like full on movie AI and people never hear any pushback against that, but know that it obviously isn't doing all the stuff the media claims it can, but the media tells them to not believe their own lying eyes.
If a NYT reporter said that on social media they'd be fired by the end of the day! If not even faster.
Deepseek does too and lets you read its "thought process" while it does the thing
