Literally, the first rule of handling firecrackers is to not lit them in the hand until you are 101% sure that you will have enough time to throw it away. And still it mostly applies to small ones.

So, better to light them on the ground and quickly move you hand away, since even 4 inches of distance is much better than having point blank explosion right near your hand in case of firecracker malfunctioning.
