Relevant and accurate. I'm none of these things.

Well, there is a statistical association between being born with a penis and being physically strong, although obviously it doesn't apply to everyone. The power tool things is just a total invention of society though.

My peen make it easier for me to build muscle mass! Which I don't take advantage of so instead I am just hairy everywhere except the part of my head that would look fashionable with hair. Can I just trade those things for being good at power tools instead?

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

yeah comparing that to astrology is a bit much. i get it, you can't know for sure what gender a person is going to be, but it's still likely to coincide with their sex, mostly through societal factors anyway.

Which is why I don't understand people who need to change themselves physically to conform to society's expectations.

They have been told all their lives "you are expected to behave this way! The way you want to behave is only acceptable for them!" It's not really that surprising.
If we could purge the sexist tropes from society that would probably do wonders for gender dysphoria.

[–] Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 months ago

I wonder how much is dysphoria and how much is dysmorphia.

I don't think I care much about what's in my pants, but I do care that other people want me to act a certain way because of that.

That's the excuse I use we're not going to the gym.

[–] match@pawb.social 2 points 4 months ago

i too am nonbinary

[–] problematicPanther@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

i think everyone should enjoy power tools, both penised and non-penised individuals.

[–] snow_bunny@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

When you think about it, a sewing machine is a power tool of sorts.

[–] problematicPanther@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

It absolutely is. It's a reciprocating needle used to bind separate pieces of cloth together.

[–] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 months ago

Right, much like how astrologists will tell you there's an association between being born under [astrological sign] and having [personality trait]. It doesn't apply to everyone...

All identity is a societal invention. That's the purpose of identity, it's for other people's perspectives and what they think. It's irrelevant otherwise, because what else needs to identify your gender? A dog? A stone? The clouds? And why gender of all things?

I'm a man. Apart from the basics, like a penis, I couldn't really tell you what "feeling like a man" actually is. Everything beyond the biological category is just made up stereotypes and don't serve any actual purpose. But for some people, they live by societal stereotypes, so if they don't like them, they will change their identity to fit into new ones. It's not at all necessary, but that's the power of worrying how others see you and why identities exist.

But at the end of the day, we're all just brains animating a corpse. So go wear a dress! They're comfy! More "men" should; they're missing out.

There's ~8% correlation between astrological sign and personality.
