‘Tell No Lies, Claim No Easy Victories’: The Cuban Revolution, Social Vulnerability, and Revolutionary Ethics

The following commentary was published on Facebook on July 16, 2025. The author, Isaac Saney, is on faculty at the College of Continuing Education, Dalhousie University, and an adjunct professor of International Development Studies at Saint Mary’s University, both in Halifax, Canada.

from #WorldOutlook
July 22, 2025

In one of the most enduring axioms of revolutionary integrity, Amílcar Cabral — African liberation theorist...urged those engaged in the struggle for liberation and justice to “Tell no lies, claim no easy victories.” This precept demands truth-telling, humility, and a relentless confrontation with reality. It stands in opposition to demagoguery, denial, and the temptation to obscure difficult truths for the sake of appearances.

Cuban Leader: ‘Everything for the People and with the People’

The author, Ernesto Limia Díaz, is First Vice-president of the Writers Association of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba. Based on a Facebook post on July 18, 2025

from #WorldOutlook

Among other important points, Limia Díaz notes that “we cannot ignore that formalizing a private economy presents challenges to the #Cuban model. One thing we must be clear about: under socialism the blind laws of the market cannot govern ― or to be precise, the “blind” laws of those seers who control the market. Under socialism the market cannot dictate the trajectory, it must establish a harmonious relationship with the interests of society. Achieving this requires planning, audacity, control, and solidarity education.”

Cuba’s President: ‘We Can’t Defend the Revolution when We Hide Our Problems’

from #WorldOutlook
July 20, 2025

[translation of an article published on July 15, 2025, on the website of the Presidency of the Cuban government.]

It reports on the response by Miguel #Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, #Cuba’s president, to controversial remarks a day earlier by Cuba’s Minister of Labor and Social Security, Marta Elena Feitó Cabrera.

On July 14, Feitó Cabrera told the National Assembly, Cuba’s parliament, that there are no beggars in Cuba, that the island’s beggars are faking poverty in search of easy money, and that those cleaning windshields on the streets or picking up rubbish from trash bins are actually collecting raw materials without paying taxes.

“We have seen people who appear to be beggars, but when you look at their hands, when you look at the clothes those people wear, they are disguised as beggars,” Feitó Cabrera said.

#Trump’s War on Cuba Now Targets Many Cuban Americans

Statement by the US-Cuba Normalization Coalition

from #WorldOutlook
July 25, 2025

For over 60 years, the #US government has imposed a harsh blockade along with economic and political warfare aimed at destabilizing and overthrowing the #Cuban government. As part of this project, it has also incentivized Cuban emigration by offering special pathways to residency and citizenship if they made their way to the U.S. The narrative that they are “victims of Communism” seeking freedom is misleading. In reality the hardships created by the U.S. blockade, more than political differences, have fueled emigration. These bribes were intended to turn them into pawns in Washington’s war against #Cuba.

The blockade of Cuba is an extreme and highly political version of the more general U.S. economic sanctions and interventionist policies whose devastating impact over decades has driven millions of working people to leave their homelands to find economic survival in the U.S.

Cuba solidarity activists receive significant support from cities to form Hands Off Cuba committees and travel to Cuba

By Mark Friedman, member, International Association of Machinists, Local 1484, Wilmington.
Chicago - July 4th weekend

More than 2,500 political activists from around the United States attended the Socialism2025 conference, their largest ever reflecting a consciousness change among workers and youth and heightened interest in alternatives to capitalism.

There were hundreds of workshops dealing with labor, environment, women, LGBTQ, immigrants, Palestine, Cuba, Marxism. A few of the most important for this reporter were workshops organized by anti-war vets from Afghanistan and Iraq in the organization “About Face”, workshops by Jewish Voices for Peace and by Palestine Youth Movement on Palestine solidarity and ending US military aid to Israel, and a presentation by union professors from the American Association of University Professors detailing Trump's attack on labor, research funding cuts and denial political freedom of speech on the campuses.

A video on #PeerTube about #Cuba from the #video collective #BellyOfTheBeast
11/23/2023

Thousands of #Cuban young people joined #Palestinian medical students for a massive march in #Havana Thursday in solidarity with #Palestine and against #Israel’s indiscriminate bombing campaign of #Gaza.

"Our job now is to become good professionals so that we can return to Palestine and support our people," said Haneen Alhendi, a Palestinian medical student at the march.

HAVANA, Cuba, May 1, 2025 — About 5.3 million people, nearly half of the country’s population of 11 million, filled the streets of cities, towns, and municipalities across the Caribbean island today to celebrate International Workers’ Day. Estimates of the turnout came from eyewitness accounts and reports in the Cuban media.

The United States calls Cuba’s medical internationalism "human trafficking" — but it’s really an internationalist lifeline for the Global South.

By Helen Yaffe
March 8, 2025

"On February 25, US secretary of state Marco Rubio announced restrictions on visas for both government officials in Cuba and any others worldwide who are “complicit” with the island nation’s overseas medical-assistance programs. A US State Department statement clarified that the sanction extends to “current and former” officials and the “immediate family of such persons.”"
